Philippines Embassy Formally Inaugurates Philippine Consulate in Botswana
The Philippines formally reopened its consular mission in Gaborone, Botswana on 02 June 2025, following its temporary closure in March 2022.
Philippine Ambassador Noralyn Jubaira Baja led the inauguration ceremony of the consulate which will be headed by Ms. Annelin Vista as honorary consul. Ms. Vista is a citizen of Botswana who is of Filipino descent. As honorary consul, her responsibilities will include assisting Filipino nationals residing in Botswana, promoting Philippine interests through trade, investment, and socio-cultural cooperation, as well as facilitating access to consular services.
In her remarks, Ambassador Baja said that the milestone underscores the Philippine government's commitment to bring consular services closer to the Filipino community in Botswana. She added that the reopening of the consulate signifies a deepening of bilateral relations between the Philippines and Botswana that has a long and rich history, dating back to 06 February 1967, when the two countries established their diplomatic relations.
Members of the government, diplomatic corps, and the Filipino diaspora in Botswana, as well as other friends of the Philippines attended the inauguration. The Ambassador and her team composed of Attaches Reynold Banda, Maria Victoria Mercado, John Matthew Poblete, and Joshua Leoj Ortiz met with the Filipino community later in the day for a meet-and-greet.

Philippine senators on Tuesday voted to return an impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte to the lower house to clarify its constitutionality, in a surprise move just hours after convening a trial that could end her political career. The Senate's late-night move could provide a lifebuoy for presidential contender Duterte in her make-or-break trial and impact the policy agenda and succession plans of former ally Marcos. . Marcos is limited to a single term in office and has created a powerful enemy in Duterte. He is expected to try to retain influence and protect his legacy by grooming a successor capable of fending off his rival in the next election should she be acquitted. "I think we have upheld our oath to be politically neutral," said Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, a Duterte loyalist who presented the motion to return the case to the House of Representatives. The lower house in February voted to impeach the vice president for high crimes and betrayal of the public trust, alleging budget irregularities, amassing of unusual wealth and a threat to the lives of Marcos, his wife, and the house speaker. She has denied all allegations. The unprecedented move by the Senate could add fuel to fierce public debate on what is already an emotionally charged issue in the Philippines, with the spectre of discord in the bicameral legislature and more legal action to try to dismiss the case against the popular Duterte. The trial will officially proceed, according to senators, who issued a summons to Duterte to respond to the charges, despite sending the case back to the lower house until a time when a Congress newly-formed after last month's midterm elections is "willing and ready" to pursue the impeachment complaint. Duterte will have 10 days to comply. A new Congress will convene at the end of July. Duterte's office late on Tuesday reiterated an earlier statement that said she was ready to "expose the baselessness of the accusations". "The impeachment process must never be weaponised to harass, silence, or eliminate political opponents," it said. Duterte is the fifth top official in the Philippines to be impeached, only one of whom, Renato Corona, a former Supreme Court chief justice, was convicted.

Starting June 10, the new service will link Trinoma in Quezon City directly to Clark International Airport in Pampanga, offering a smoother and more accessible travel experience. Those purchasing tickets via Emirates offices or travel agents should ensure that the bus service is added to the ticket before it is issued. The service is not available to passengers without a valid Emirates-issued ticket or a prior booking. This initiative aims to provide a more comfortable and seamless journey for passengers, particularly those residing in Metro Manila and nearby regions. New Southeast Asia routes via Bangkok In parallel with its Philippines service expansion, Inaugural flights were held on June 2 for Da Nang and June 3 for Siem Reap, marked by traditional water cannon salutes and ceremonial welcomes from local officials. Operated by the Boeing 777-300ER, the new flights offer Emirates' signature inflight experience along with efficient connections to Dubai and beyond. 'Launching two new routes via Bangkok marks a significant milestone in strengthening Emirates' presence in Southeast Asia,' said Nabil Sultan, Emirates' Executive Vice President, Passenger Sales and Country Management. How will the impeachment trial of Philippine VP Sara Duterte be held?
Philippine Vice-President Sara Duterte, the popular daughter of the firebrand former leader Rodrigo Duterte, is facing a high-profile impeachment trial in the Senate that could determine her future in politics. WHAT IS DUTERTE CHARGED WITH? The impeachment complaint alleges Duterte is guilty of violating the constitution, graft and corruption, other high crimes, and betraying public trust. She is accused of misusing public funds while vice president and education minister, amassing unexplained wealth and threatening the lives of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the first lady and the lower house speaker. She denies all of the allegations. The impeachment, led by lower house allies of Marcos, followed a series of legislative enquiries into the finances of the vice-president's office, at a time when the relationship between Duterte and Marcos was rapidly deteriorating. Former ally Marcos has distanced himself from the impeachment and Duterte says the process has been weaponised and used as a political tool to sideline her. HOW WILL THE TRIAL BE CONDUCTED? The Senate will convene as an impeachment court, initially with 22 members as jurors and the speaker of the Senate presiding. The lower house has already appointed members to serve as prosecutors and Duterte has assembled a defence team to confront what she calls "baseless accusations". A new Senate is due to convene in July following May's midterm elections, with 12 new members joining to restore the chamber to its full complement of 24, meaning some of the jurors will change when the current Senate term expires. HOW MANY OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN IMPEACHED IN THE PHILIPPINES? Duterte is the fifth top official in the Philippines to be impeached, after former President Joseph Estrada, an ombudsman, former Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona, and a former chairman of the election commission. Only Corona was convicted, with the former ombudsman and election commission chief resigning after they were impeached. Estrada's 2001 trial was aborted after some prosecutors walked out. WHAT IS REQUIRED TO CONVICT DUTERTE? A two-thirds majority vote in the Senate is needed to convict an impeached official. This means at least 16 out of 24 senators must vote in favour of conviction for it to pass. If convicted, Duterte would be removed from office and disqualified from holding any future government position, which would kill off any potential bid for the presidency. If a vice president is removed, the president will nominate a successor from among members of the Senate and House of Representatives and the nominee must be confirmed by a majority vote in both chambers, voting separately. WHAT IS THE LIKELY OUTCOME? The outcome of the trial is difficult to predict. While some senators have openly allied themselves with Marcos or Duterte, allegiances can easily shift in the Philippines depending on the political climate and public sentiment, with some hedging their bets ahead of elections in 2028. The introduction of 12 new senators next month is seen by analysts as a boon for Duterte, with her allies among the newcomers. The duration of an impeachment trial is not fixed and depends on a host of factors including the complexity of the case, number of witnesses and volume of evidence presented. For instance, the 2012 impeachment trial of the late Chief Justice Renato Corona lasted five months.
