Govt to set up 1.1k Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, 166 ready
New Delhi: Delhi govt intends to set up 1,100 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, of which 166 are ready. Alongside, five major hospital expansions will be completed this month, adding 1,300 new beds, new OPDs and advanced medical equipment to the city's healthcare infrastructure. Chief minister Rekha Gupta said Delhi's hospitals were being integrated into the Hospital Information Management System (HIMS), which would allow patients to book appointments online, access digital health records and receive unique health IDs. CM said that medicine procurement would now be centralised to ensure transparency and efficiency. She said these initiatives would form the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive healthcare system in the city. Govt officials said seven ongoing hospital projects in the capital would be redeveloped as super-specialty ICU centres, each dedicated to treating specific critical conditions such as cancer, high-risk deliveries and organ transplants. However, progress had remained dodgy in most of these projects. Gupta claimed that the real asset of Delhi was its health and criticised the previous govt for what she described as "depriving Delhi residents of the benefits of the Ayushman scheme". Her govt, she said, implemented the central scheme on the very first day after taking oath. So far, 4.5 lakh people have enrolled in the scheme and started receiving treatment. Under the Vaya Vandan Yojana, 2.2 lakh citizens above the age of 70 years have been provided free treatment of up to Rs 10 lakh each, she said. To address the shortage of medical equipment in hospitals, 150 dialysis machines, 20 CT scan machines and 12 MRI machines have been newly installed, she said. "Also, medical superintendents have been appointed in 28 hospitals and 1,500 nurses have been given permanent appointments," CM says. She said Delhi govt's resolve was that every citizen of Delhi should be healthy, safe, and empowered. "The foundation we have laid in healthcare, sports and youth welfare will strengthen generations to come," she said. While seven ICU-bedded hospitals are being built in Shalimar Bagh, Kirari, Sultanpuri, Sarita Vihar, Raghubir Nagar and in the existing premises of Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya in Geeta Colony and GTB Hospital in Dilshad Garden, four other multi-specialty general hospitals are coming up in Jwalapuri, Madipur, Hastsal and Siraspur. These 11 new health facilities were taken up for construction in 2020 and 2021 after the Covid-19 outbreak. Cardiac arrest deaths tripled in last two years in Karnataka, shows data
BENGALURU: Deaths linked to cardiac arrests recorded under Karnataka's Dr Puneeth Rajkumar Hrudaya Jyoti Yojana have almost tripled, surging from 229 in 2023–24 to 608 in 2024–25, according to the state health department data. The number of critical ECG screenings also nearly tripled in the same period — from 2,489 to 6,767. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao shared the figures as an answer during the ongoing monsoon Legislative Council session. The department does not have a total number of heart attacks reported in the state or related deaths outside Dr Puneeth Rajkumar scheme, because heart attacks, so far, were not considered as a 'notifiable' disease. It was only this year during July that the Health Minister announced that cardiac attack related deaths outside hospitals will be declared as 'notifiable'. The minister had announced this after a surge was reported in heart attack cases in the state and a committee was formed to look into sudden cardiovascular events among individuals under 45 years of age. However, a government order regarding the same is not yet issued. Health department officials said that over 75% of the heart attack cases reported involved individuals with more than one cardiac risk factor and that the most contributing factors include obesity, heavy alcohol intake, smoking and high blood pressure. To reduce the risk of sudden heart-related deaths, health department officials said that they are considering expanding CPR training for specific groups such as physical trainers in gyms apart from school and college students and teachers. Additionally, efforts are on to ensure that gyms, malls, and other crowded places are equipped with Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to ensure immediate response during cardiac arrests. What is the scheme? The state government launched the Dr Puneeth Rajkumar Hrudaya Jyoti Yojana in October 2023 to provide emergency cardiac care to patients suffering from heart attacks or sudden cardiac issues within the golden hour. The model uses a 'hub-and-spoke' approach - Hubs are established at 16 super-specialty hospitals like Jayadeva Hospital in Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Kalaburagi. These hubs are connected to 85 spoke centers, encompassing district and taluk hospitals where patients first present. After initial treatment at a spoke, patients requiring advanced care are referred to a hub for specialized interventions. The scheme delivers tenecteplase injections - a clot-busting medication that costs up to Rs 45,000, at free of cost.

1,254 infant, 45 maternal deaths in Koppal over three years
Koppal: Govt hospitals in Koppal district reported 1,253 newborn and 45 maternal deaths over the past three years, with one infant death occurring in a private hospital. Premature births and health complications were cited as causes. Health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao disclosed these figures in response to BJP MLC Hemalatha Nayak during question hour in the legislative council. The health minister stated that a total of 1,253 newborn deaths were reported, including 446 in 2022-23, 491 in 2023-24, and 317 in 2024-25. Except for one infant death at a private hospital in 2023-24, all cases occurred in govt hospitals in the district. Additionally, 45 maternal deaths were recorded between 2022-23 and 2024-25, attributed to various causes such as high blood pressure and bleeding during pregnancy. "These cases are an example of the state of the health sector in the district," criticised B Girishanand, district president of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV). "The number of deaths in private hospitals is not easily available. Therefore, only one infant death has been shown. In reality, it cannot be ruled out that at least half of such deaths might have occurred there," he alleged. Rao detailed actions taken against doctors in other districts of the state regarding maternal and infant deaths in govt hospitals. Show cause notices were issued to a total of 11 doctors from hospitals in Davanagere, Yadgir, Tumakuru, Shivamogga, and Bengaluru Rural districts, including four in Kalaburagi and two in Ramanagara. The health minister emphasised that there is a system for conducting impartial investigations into such incidents. "The state-level maternal mortality analysis committee analysed 530 incidents last year. Accordingly, the infant mortality rate in the state is decreasing, and according to the SRS report of 2022, the infant mortality rate came down from 19 to 14 per 1,000 live births," he explained. Despite the high number of deaths in Koppal district, "no medical institution or doctor has been identified and disciplinary action has been taken," stated the health minister. There is considerable discontent in the district regarding the high rates of maternal and child fatalities and the govt's lack of disciplinary measures. "Numerous media reports have highlighted irregularities in Koppal's govt hospitals. The response from the health minister has confirmed this.
