Aussie champ's seven-figure offer to put belts on table
Jai Opetaia is prepared to make a seven-figure sacrifice in his drawn-out quest for world boxing title unification.
The Australian cruiserweight sensation (27-0) will defend his IBF and The Ring belts on the Gold Coast this Sunday against unbeaten Italian Claudio Squeo (17-0).
They'll come face-to-face for the first time on Wednesday before headlining a stacked card that includes Conor Wallace, Ben Mahoney, Max McIntyre and Teremoana Teremoana.
The fight comes almost three years after an unfancied Opetaia defied two breaks in his jaw to beat champion Mairis Briedis and claim those titles.
He's fought five times since - the Briedis rematch last year his only genuine challenge - but is yet to land a shot at the other three belts in his division.
Badou Jack owns the WBC belt but it's WBO and WBA champion Gilberto Ramirez firmly in Opetaia's sights, the Mexican two-weight champion due for a mandatory defence later this month and insistent he will face the Australian next.
"I'll believe it when I see it," Opetaia told AAP.
"(Former WBO champion Chris) Billam-Smith said that same stuff before he lost to Ramirez.
"They all talk like that.
"So when they're f***ing ready, I'll be ready."
Should both fighters win, an Opetaia-Ramirez, four-belt unification bout would sit nicely on the undercard to September's historic duel between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford in Las Vegas.
The purse on a blockbuster card would swell into the millions and traditionally be split between fighters who both hold two belts.
But Opetaia said he'd be willing to leave half of his cut on the table if that sways the Mexican great to sign the deal.
"If I have to, and they're being that hard to deal with," he said.
"It should be down the middle but if he wants to be a sook, bro, take more, then.
"I don't give a f***. I personally believe I'm the best and all I have to do is win, then the next fight I'll get paid.
"It's not the money I'm chasing, it's the belts."
A stumbling block presents in Youtuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, who will headline the Ramirez card on June 28 and has a long list of future targets that includes the Mexican, but not Opetaia.
"Why don't they ask him about me?," Opetaia said of the former Disney star.
"If he wants to get bashed, I'll bash him. He won't fight me. Why am I even talking about him?
"I am the best cruiserweight in the world and no one is until they beat me."
That will be the unranked Squeo's tall task in his first fight outside of Italy, the 34-year-old known as 'The Red Bull' arriving with a reputation as a knockout specialist.
"It is annoying and especially these fights like this; dangerous and it's all risk and not much reward," Opetaia said of the non-mandatory defence designed to keep him busy.
"It's just how it works. I have to stay on the ball and it's what makes the good great; the ones who stay switched on throughout these things."

Aussie twosome hot on leaders' heels in Champions Tour
Thomas Bjorn and Darren Clarke have combined to shoot a 12-under-par 59 to grab the early advantage at the American Family Insurance Championship in Madison. Friday's four ball (best ball) format, which takes the lower score of a pairing of two golfers on each hole, is predisposed to the proliferation of lower scores, and indeed, every coupling of golfers competing was under par on the day. Clarke, of Northern Ireland, and Denmark's Bjorn were a dynamic duo on the first day of the tournament's debut at TPC Wisconsin, with each accounting for seven birdies across 12 different holes. But they have Australian twosome Richard Green and Mark Hensby in hot pursuit, just two behind them. "Certainly for me knowing Thomas's game so well made it so much easier for me to go out there and free it up today," Clarke said. "I really enjoy playing with him because I know he's there if I mess up, and likewise I try to be there for him. "We have, it's like a 'no sorry' policy. We're both trying as hard as we can and we both hit a lot of really good shots today and made the most of our opportunities." Each got on individual hot streaks, nabbing birdies on four straight holes. Overall, Clarke pocketed birdies on Nos.2, 4-7, 9 and 14. Bjorn had birdies at Nos.4-5, 11 and 15-18. "I think we were tactically very, very sound today and did the right things when we had to," Bjorn said. "When we had two balls in the fairway or two balls on the green, we could be aggressive and that's why we holed more putts than we probably normally would, and we could take on a little bit more flags." Seven duos are within four strokes of the leaders. Green and Hensby at 10-under 61, were good for second place. Hensby had the rougher day of the two with a pair of bogeys, but six birdies by Green kept them in contention. "I think we just both really enjoy the golf course, and the conditions are beautiful," Green said. "It's a lot of fun to play and hit the right shots required on this golf course. I felt comfortable out there." Defending champion Ernie Els of South Africa and his partner Tim Herron are tied for third at nine under alongside Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee and Australia's Brendan Jones. Tied for fifth at eight under are Australians Cameron Percy and David Bransdon, fellow Australians Stuart Appleby and Michael Wright, South Korea's K.J. Choi and Japan's Hiroyuki Fujita and Americans Gene Sauers and Glen Day. Saturday will switch things up with a scramble format - golfers choose the best lie of the two shoots they take from each location along the hole until the hole is completed - before reverting to best ball format on championship Sunday.

Hugh Jackman, Deborra-Lee Furness divvy up real estate amid divorce, including $35 million NYC apartment
As tensions heat up in their divorce, Hugh Jackman and Deborra Lee-Furness have started splitting up their real estate assets. Furness, 69, reportedly paid $11.7 million (AU$18 million) to the company that the couple used to buy their glamorous New York City penthouse in 2022 for $21 million. The luxury apartment in Manhattan's Chelsea neighbourhood is now valued at around $23 million, according to People , meaning that Furness has bought Jackman, 56, out. Property records suggest that the Australian actress made the payment on May 25, two days before she officially filed for divorce after 27 years of marriage. The three-bedroom and 3.5-bathroom apartment sprawls over 5,000 square feet across two floors, with an additional 3,700 square feet of outdoor space. It's tucked near the Hudson River in a neighbourhood known for bold facades and even bolder celebrity residents. The riverfront haven is just one of many standouts in the former couple's enviable real estate collection, which includes properties in the US, UK and at home in Australia. It is believed that they still own together a waterfront apartment overlooking the iconic Bondi Beach, a second apartment in New York City's West Village and a Hamptons beach house. The news comes after the former couple were reportedly struggling earlier this year to divvy up their estimated $250 million fortune after it was revealed they didn't have a prenup. The pair eventually reached an agreement behind the scenes. 'A settlement was reached that Deborra is pleased with, which includes a handsome spousal support payment,' a source revealed to The Daily Mail . 'There was some back and forth regarding this financial agreement, but in the end, she got what she believed she deserved. Both are coming out of this financially secure.' It is believed their marriage began to unravel during COVID, which is around the same time Jackman struck up a friendship with Sutton Foster, his co-star on the hit Broadway revival of The Music Man. In a recent statement, Furness hinted that the Wolverine star committed an act of 'betrayal', fuelling rumours that her former husband cheated on her with Foster. Furness is now reportedly planning to publish a tell-all book, which will detail her side of the divorce. Jackman is yet to release a statement about the divorce, but is believed to be 'extremely disappointed' in Furness' allegations about 'betrayal'.
