Actress Ranya Rao gets bail in gold smuggling case
A special court in Bengaluru on Tuesday granted statutory bail to actress Ranya Rao who was arrested in connection with a gold smuggling case.
Harshavardhini Ranya alias Ranya Rao (33) is the daughter of senior IPS officer Ramachandra Rao.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had seized gold bars worth Rs 12.56 crore from Ranya at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on March 3. Later, Tarun Konduru Raju and Sahil Sakariya Jain were arrested in connection with the case.
Ranya Rao and her accomplices were lodged in the Bengaluru Central Prison in Parappana Agrahara.
Although granted bail, her release from prison is unlikely since Ranya Rao along with her two accomplices, Tarun Koduru Raju and Sahil Sakariya Jain, were placed under detention under the stringent Conversation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act 1974 (COFEPOSA Act, 1974).

Gaming authority questions TNPL over surrogate ads of betting apps
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority (TNOGA) has sought explanation from the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) regarding advertisement of offshore betting apps at its tournament being held in Coimbatore. The TNPL is an eight-team, franchise-based cricket competition organised by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) where international and popular IPL cricketers from Tamil Nadu like R Ashwin, Sai Kishore, Shahrukh Khan, and T Natarajan are participating. It is telecast on TV and live-streaming apps. A senior TNOGA official said that they had a meeting with the TNPL Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Prasanna Shankar at their office in MRC Nagar in Chennai on Wednesday (June 11). This was a few days after TNOGA sought an explanation after receiving multiple grievance emails from residents of Tamil Nadu, pointing out that TNPL teams have enlisted multiple betting apps like dafabet, 1xBet, MELBET, Cricadda, Pin-up Cricket and JSK1 as main sponsors. These apps are promoted through surrogate advertising like dafanews, MELBAT, Cricadda news, and JSK1 news, etc. TNIE had recently reported on the wide prevalence of surrogate advertising in TNPL. According to the official, the surrogate advertising of offshore betting apps by TNPL has been found to be 'prima facie objectionable'. The TNOGA official stated that even surrogate advertisement of online betting apps is not allowed as per Section 8 of the TN Prohibition of Online Gaming and Regulation of Online Games Act, which bans the direct or indirect promotion of online gambling. Section 16(2) allows for a punishment of one year prison term or Rs 5 lakh fine for those violating Section 8.

Formula E race: KTR gets fresh ACB summons
Hyderabad: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), which is probing the irregularities in the Formula E race, has once again summoned former minister K T Rama Rao. The BRS working president has been asked to appear for an inquiry by 10 am on Monday. Meanwhile, Rao dared Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to take a lie detector test along with him since names of both figure in ACB cases. Earlier, the investigating agency had served notices on KTR on May 26 asking him to attend the inquiry on May 28. However, the BRS leader sought time as he was on his way to the USA and UK, which the agency obliged. Rao, who had earlier attended the Enforcement Directorate (ED) inquiry, went to depose on January 6 along with his lawyers. However, the inquiry officials did not allow the presence of others following which KTR left. Subsequently, on January 8, he appeared before the investigators, who grilled him for seven hours. The ACB is probing irregularities to the tune of a whopping Rs 55 crore. The agency has named three accused, including KTR (A1), senior IAS officer Arvind Kumar (A2) and former HMDA engineer BLN Reddy as A3. Each has been questioned separately.

Gujarat plane crash: Will give 2 crore; bring back my father, says woman to Tata Group
Air India plane crash AHMEDABAD: An Air India crash victim's daughter, Falguni, on Friday said she was willing to pay airline owner Tata Group Rs 2 crore if it could bring back her father. The group has announced Rs 1 crore for each flier who perished in Thursday's crash. Videos of the distraught Falguni's outburst went viral on Friday as she waited with others at Ahmedabad's BJ Medical College to give blood samples for DNA identification of the charred remains. Emotions ran high as many were seen breaking down at the hospital. "Can the compensation announced by Tata Group ever bring back my father? I will pay Rs 2 crore to them if they can bring back my father, who always preferred travelling on Air India... My mother is sick, and she needs my father. I need his love and affection," Falguni said. Hospital officials said sampling of 219 people was completed on Friday. The procedure is likely to take 48 to 72 hours and the initial identification process could begin from Saturday, the officials said. "Majority of the relatives who were in Ahmedabad and elsewhere in India arrived and provided samples. We also got a few foreign nationals. Once the match takes place, identifications will start. After that, the bodies will be handed over to the relatives," said an official. Multiple teams have been deployed for the DNA analysis, with resources pooled from across Gujarat, the officials said.
