Four-time snooker world champion blasts his 'pathetic' performance in shock first round defeat to rank outsider
Snooker star Mark Selby hit out as his 'pathetic' performance after he was upset by Ben Woollaston in the opening round of the World Snooker Championships.
Four time world champion Selby, 41, was one of the favourites going into the tournament but was stunned by fellow Leicester native Woollaston in a contest which went on past midnight.
Woollaston, 37, whose only professional title came at the minor-ranking third Players Tour Championship in 2011, stunned the fourth seed 10-8.
Selby had held a slim 5-4 lead ahead of last night's deciding session in Sheffield but Woollaston won all but three frames to reach the second round, in what is only his second appearance at the main tournament.
The world No. 44 is competing at the crucible for the first time since 2013 and will face former semi-finalist Si Jiahu.
Following his shock defeat, Selby said: 'I didn't deserve to win.
'Ben played some great stuff, his safety was unbelievable at times but I still had my chances. It was pathetic really from me, to play like that is disappointing.
'It's the same old story, I try too hard and stop myself from playing. I love Ben to bits, I've known him for years. I grew up with him and have seen him progressing.
'To finish off the season like that has put a dampener on the season. My goal going forward is to win more Triple Crown events.'
Meanwhile, Woollaston hailed the victory as the biggest of his career.
'I got to the final of the Welsh Open and my biggest win was beating [Mark] Williams in Wales and it was packed, but this is bigger.
'I know I'm pretty good tactically, but Mark [Selby] is the best at that. I stayed pretty tough in the safety battles and that's what won me the match.'
He added: 'I'm in shock really.
'I never thought this day would come, winning a match at the Crucible, and against Mark, who except for Ronnie O'Sullivan is probably the king of the Crucible in recent times. It's an amazing win for me.'
Earlier on Thursday, former champion Luca Brecel beat Ryan Day 10-7, coming back from 5-1 down, to reach the last 16.
After the loss, Day, 45, admitted his best days were past him.
'Even with a 5-1 lead I was looking over my shoulder and not looking forward. I'm just not over-confident and I'm definitely not the player I once was,' he said.
'I turn up and play and try. I've been doing it a long time so it's obviously a lot closer to the end than the beginning. I would've beaten myself up the way I played if that had been a couple of years ago, but I've come to terms with it.
'I still like competing, I just haven't got the game that I had. As long as I'm on the tour I will still play and make a living out of it. I need to try to do something different [in matches] but I can't see my game really improving much.'

Jackson Page is not only a history-making snooker player, but now the proud owner of a trading card and collectibles shop. The 23-year-old continued to make good progress in his snooker career, enjoying the best season of his young career so far last time round. 'Everyone on tour knows that I am really into collectible stuff like Pokemon Cards and other things,' he told WST. 'I just decided it would be great to open up a shop as a bit of a thing on the side. 'It is a bit of an interest for me and something I like to do when I'm not focussing on snooker. It has been a brilliant experience seeing it open up, I obviously can't work in there as I'm a snooker player but I've got someone to work there and it is a good hobby to have.' 'We've got all sorts of things in there like Lego sets and Plushies, as well as the trading cards. It has been fun setting it up. We've got a few cards in there worth over £2,000. The most valuable and rare Pokemon Card we have is called a Moonbreon. 'When I was a kid I used to collect cards and I got back into it a couple of years ago. Now I'm in a position where I'm able to open a shop so I'll see how it goes. It will be exciting to see how it pans out. Mark Williams popped over the other day to see the shop, his boy is into it all as well. So it was nice to have him come along.' New world champion Zhao Xintong shares an interest with Page, as he showed by sporting the Pokemon Chimchar on his bowtie at the Crucible. The shop's owner hopes to see the world champ come and spend some of his £500,000 winnings. 'He's just won a fortune, so he could be a good customer,' he said. 'Despite being there for the final, I had no idea he had that on his bowtie. 'We have a Chimchar Funko Pop in the shop actually. I could maybe sell that to him!' Page made the two 147s in the penultimate round of World Championship qualifying but then was beaten by Joe O'Connor at the last hurdle before the Crucible. More Trending He said after that loss that he would swap the history and huge bonus for a trip to the Crucible, but is a bit more philosophical on the situation now. 'It was hard to be too disappointed coming off the back of what I'd just done and what I'd won,' he said. 'It would have been a great buzz to go to the Crucible, but Joe is a great player and he played well. 'There's swings and roundabouts, wins and losses. At the end of the day I need to come back next year and try to be in a position where I don't have to qualify.' Page gets the new season underway with a Wuhan Open qualifier against Ross Muir on June 24 and is back in action the following day in British Open qualifying against Elliot Slessor. Sovereignty makes it a Classic double in Belmont Stakes
The Bill Mott-trained Sovereignty provided the Godolphin operation with a first taste of Kentucky Derby glory at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May, beating Michael McCarthy's hot favourite Journalism into second place. With connections of Sovereignty resisting the temptation to shoot for Triple Crown immortality and running in Preakness Stakes a fortnight later, Journalism took full advantage with a narrow success at Pimlico, setting up a tantalising rematch at Saratoga. Journalism was the first of the big two to commit for home, quickening to the lead off the final bend under Umberto Rispoli, but Sovereignty and Junior Alvarado joined him entering the final furlong before pulling three lengths clear to confirm his status as America's star three-year-old colt. Speaking on the Godolphin website, Mott said: 'We had a repeat of the Derby – the first three finishers in the Derby finished one-two-three here – and the form is holding up. They are three really good horses and I'm glad that Sovereignty was able to come back and put in a race like he did in the Derby. 'If we hadn't won today, we would have taken a lot of criticism for missing the Preakness, but it turned out good. Sometimes, you make the right decision and a lot of times you make the wrong ones. Today, it really worked out well.' Michael Banahan, director of bloodstock for Godolphin USA, said: 'It's the most fantastic feeling in the world. Sovereignty was trained to the minute by Bill and his team to come here off a five-week rest. 'We knew that he was a good horse going into the Kentucky Derby and he showed it that day. To come back here and show it again, and beat a really, really good horse in Journalism, it was a fantastic result for us. 'It's fantastic to win two legs of the Triple Crown. We are very, very happy with doing it – coming here after the Derby was the plan and it teed up a really good race, with the Derby winner and the Preakness winner having a showdown in the Belmont.' Considering plans for the rest of the year, Banahan added: 'There are races down the road that we would really like to win – the Travers is very special. We've won it before, but I don't think Bill has, so it would be great for him to do that. 'It would be great, if the horse is healthy and well, to try to get to Del Mar for the Breeders' Cup Classic. It's a race that we have run in several times without having the opportunity to win yet.' The Jamie Osborne-trained Heart Of Honor represented British hopes but he could finish only sixth under Saffie Osborne.
