Marriott CEO says ‘the right thing' about DEI, gets 40K emails in response

New York Post04-05-2025

A hotel industry's top exec has revealed the overwhelming positive support he's received after tackling diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) head on.
During the Great Place to Work for All Summit last week, Marriott CEO and President Anthony Capuano spoke to the crowd about the cultural and workplace shifts on DEI and reflected on a moment he was met with unexpected encouragement from tens of thousands of emails from coworkers.

'The day the [DEI] executive order came out, I sat with our senior leadership team and I said: given the industry-leading position we have, we ought to make sure we're all aligned on, not only philosophically — how we think about this, which was the easy part — but what words we use, what language we use. We should talk with the board a little bit about it,' Capuano said on stage.
'There's a very big hotel industry investment conference called the ALIS Conference,' he expanded.
'And so the next morning, I did a media breakfast. I did six one-on-one media interviews and then… we did the CEO panel. This was the first question in all eight of those interactions.'

President Donald Trump shut down all diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) offices across the federal government during his first week in office and signed a number of executive orders to quickly undo former President Joe Biden's efforts.
Not only did Trump shut down all federal offices, he signed two other related executive orders in January: one that ended discrimination in the workplace and higher education through race and sex-based preferences under the guise of DEI; the other was a memo to eliminate a Biden administration policy that prioritized DEI hiring at the Federal Aviation Administration.
3 Capuano told the crowd at the Great Place to Work for All Summit last week that shifting from DEI policies was met with unexplained encouragement from thousands of coworkers.

As a result, since then, top U.S.-based brands and companies have rolled back their number of DEI policies, like Amazon, Meta, McDonald's, Boeing, Ford, Harley-Davidson, John Deere, Lowe's, Nissan, Toyota, Walmart and others.

When it came time for Capuano to answer the public on Marriott's stance on DEI, he claimed he 'mentally phoned a friend.'
'I thought about what I'd heard from Bill Marriott all these decades. And what I said in response to those questions, we've been around for almost a century, political winds blow all different directions, particularly when you operate in almost 150 countries. I said, but there are some fundamental truths about this company that have guided us for those 98 years,' the CEO noted.

'We welcome all to our hotels, and we create opportunity for all. And fundamentally, those will never change, right?' Capuano continued.
'The words might change, but that's who we are as a company.'
'Then I went back to my room and said, 'Gosh, I hope I said the right thing.' In the next 24 hours, I got 40,000 emails from Marriott associates around the world just saying, 'thank you.''

Working With Pride: Why Equity Is A Strategic Imperative

Real progress happens when inclusion is embedded in how we work, not just celebrated during one ... More month. Every year, Pride Month offers us a moment to reflect on progress, visibility and the responsibility we hold as leaders. I'm fortunate enough to be recognized on the global list of LGBTQ+ business leaders, and have seen firsthand how equity and fairness can power organizational transformation and support business goals. With markets navigating ongoing uncertainty and growing talent scarcity, fostering diverse thinking is a strategic necessity. This requires an inclusive approach that ensures that everyone has the opportunity to contribute their best and organizations can tap into the full potential of their people. A sense of belonging allows people to bring their best selves to work. When individuals feel accepted and valued for who they are, they are more innovative, more creative and more committed. It's in these environments that people go beyond just doing their jobs; they thrive, contribute new ideas and support those around them. Belonging is an enabler of performance and purpose. Recent global research underscores that a sense of belonging is now a decisive factor for many workers: more than half of talent globally (55%) say they would leave a job if they didn't feel they belonged and a similar proportion wouldn't join a company that didn't align with their social values. These aren't marginal concerns. They are indicators of whether people feel empowered to contribute fully. And they are shaping employment decisions across generations, industries, and geographies. Diverse teams, supported by inclusive organizational cultures, are proven to be more innovative and productive. In today's shifting economies, diversity, in all its forms, is incredibly important to business agility and long-term success. As business leaders, we don't have all the answers, but we do need to lead with intent, and this should not be a once-off, symbolic gesture, but a practical recommitment to shaping a more inclusive, and productive, future of work. Building a more inclusive world of work requires shared responsibility, awareness, education, and action. Here are four ways companies can move toward a more inclusive future: It's important to note that together, we continue to learn and evolve. But we know that real progress happens when inclusion is embedded in how we work, not just celebrated during one month. When inclusion is done well, it strengthens trust, boosts productivity and drives long-term value creation. That's the opportunity before us, and the reason to act.

Poll Shows Companies Maintaing DEI Intiatives Have Better Reputations

Source: Cheng Xin / Getty In news surprising to absolutely no one, it turns out companies that have walked back their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiative have suffered measurable reputational damage with consumers. According to a poll conducted by Axios, companies that maintained their DEI policies saw their reputational scores actually increase. The scores are based on metrics that measure 'trust, culture, ethics, citizenship, vision, growth, and products and services.' Of the 100 companies centered in the poll, there was an average reputation decline of 2.34 points. A common trait shared by the companies that received these declines is that they walked back their commitments to DEI initiatives. The majority of these withdrawals came as a result of the Trump administration's ongoing assault against anything it sees as DEI. Yet notably, companies such as Costco and Microsoft, which have held their ground on their DEI commitments, saw their reputations increase at an average of 1.5 points. These results come as a recent Pew Research poll shows that the majority of Americans still believe DEI initiatives are good for the workplace. As I said in the headline, this news really isn't that surprising if you've been paying even the slightest amount of attention over the last several months. Target has really committed itself to being a corporate lolcow this year, as its steps to wind back its DEI initiatives have blown up spectacularly in its face. In fact, let's speed run through how bad this has gone for Target. Almost as soon as the company announced it would be rolling back its DEI initiatives, consumer boycotts began in earnest. Initially, there was anecdotal evidence of their effect as foot traffic had been noticeably down in Target stores in the weeks following the boycotts. The impact was so bad that the company reached out to Rev. Al Sharpton to help figure out how they could rebuild trust with the Black community. Source: picture alliance / Getty Target's 2025 woes were compounded during an earnings call in late May, where they revealed a 2.8 percent decrease in sales in the wake of the boycotts. This didn't help the continuous decline of Target's stock price, with shares dropping 3.5 percent after they revealed the sales dip. Target was one of the companies included in Axios' poll, and its reputation went down by five percentage points and was listed in the bottom 25 percent when it came to ethics. Meanwhile, Costco's been out here big stepping with that 'I ball too hard, my girl too bad, my money too tall'-type energy. Shareholders overwhelmingly voted to keep their current DEI measures intact, and consumers seem to have noticed. Last week, Costco revealed that its earnings and revenue increased eight percent over the last quarter. Just speaking for myself and my family, the money that we would usually spend on a Target run has instead been redirected to Big Kirkland, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was true of many Black households throughout the country. Target's ongoing woes have proved to be a warning sign for a significant number of American retailers. Companies such as Walmart and Home Depot listed consumer boycotts as a potential risk in their annual regulatory filings. The numbers don't lie; withdrawing from DEI initiatives has proven to be a bad business. Here's hoping American companies finally take the hint (they won't, though, let's be real).
