In the video, Maher said Musk is an "engineering genius who figured out how to do more vital, life-shaping things than anyone since [Thomas] Edison."
He added of Musk's relationship with Trump: "I get it. You were hurt in your previous relationship with the left, so you threw yourself into a bad rebound."
"We've all been there, man. I just want you to look at everything you developed before Trump. The electric car, the reusable rockets, the brain chips—and then look what you developed after Trump: a drug habit," Maher continued, while referencing a Daily Beast article titled: "Insiders Spill on Elon Musk's Frenzied Drug Use."
In May, The New York Times reported the South Africa native had used drugs "intensely" during the 2024 presidential election, and that it went "well beyond occasional use."
Last week, Trump was asked if Musk "had drugs here at the White House," to which Trump responded: "I really don't know. I don't think so. I hope not."

Nissan revealed a complete refresh of its LEAF electric vehicle on Tuesday, and it's the cheapest new EV on the US market. The 2026 Leaf has been updated with a new design and an improved EPA-estimated range of 303 miles, adding more than 90 miles of range over its 2025 model. The starting manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) is $29,990, making the LEAF the only sub-$30,000 EV on the market. "We've stuck to our mission of engineering EVs that are affordable but packed with value. That's how we've kept the LEAF's price steady over three generations — all while giving owners more style, more technology, more features, and a vastly improved driving range over the original 2011 model." America's transition to electric vehicles has slowed down in recent years. Part of the problem is the lack of affordable options for consumers. The Trump administration's move to ax the $7,500 federal tax credit could also make EVs more expensive. "Nissan is refreshing its product portfolio with new and updated models featuring electrified powertrains, responding to increasing interest in affordable EVs, including those in the sub-$30k price bracket," the Nissan spokesperson said. Even Tesla, the top EV seller in the US for more than half a decade, is not immune to slumping sales and demands for cheaper models. Tesla's most affordable option, the Model 3 sedan, starts at $34,990. In 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk proposed making a "compelling $25,000 electric vehicle." Four years later, his tone shifted, and he called a model at that price "pointless." Still, Tesla said in January that production of "more affordable models" was on track to start in the first half of 2025. During Tesla's second-quarter earnings in July, company executives, including Musk, had zero updates on that progress.

Tesla opens first Kentucky store, selling EVs directly. Could more locations be on the way?
For the first time, Elon Musk-led Tesla is selling its lineup of electric vehicles from a Kentucky store. Tesla has been offering direct vehicle sales to buyers from its 11701 Gateworth Way store since June, according to a Tesla sales advisor, and carries all five Tesla models: Model S, Model 3, Model Y, Model X and the Cybertruck. The location also offers leasing, demo drives, and a service center. The Gateworth Way store, in the Middletown area off Interstate 64, is Tesla's first in Kentucky. Before its opening, Louisville buyers had to trek to Cincinnati to find Tesla's nearest direct sales location. The Louisville-area store has sold about 15-25 vehicles per day since opening, said the Tesla sales advisor, who answered a phone call to the sales department but declined to be named. Here's what that means Kentucky law does not allow auto manufacturers to "own, operate, or control any motor vehicle dealership in the Commonwealth," which generally precludes the direct-to-consumer business models embraced by automakers like Tesla and Rivian. But this law has a caveat: If the Kentucky Motor Vehicle Commission finds there is no independent dealer in the community "to own and operate the franchise in a manner consistent with the public interest," according to the law, the commission can grant a sales license to the manufacturer. Under this provision, Tesla was able to move forward with plans for a store in the metro, several years after opening the Gateworth Way location as a service center. Last year, the Kentucky Motor Vehicle Commission granted Tesla a sales licence for this location, the company's first in the state, The Courier Journal previously reported. Tesla also plans to operate a gallery in the Lexington area, according to the Louisville sales advisor, where prospective buyers can browse the company's lineup of vehicles. The company is hiring for several roles in Lexington, including a gallery manager based at the Fayette Mall, according to job postings on the Tesla website. Tesla's expansion of direct-to-consumer sales in Kentucky could help boost EV adoption in the commonwealth, where consumers have been relatively slow to make the switch to electric.
