Elon Musk fired back at Bill Maher over a claim he made about the Tesla CEO using drugs.
Newsweek reached out to Musk's representative via email for comment on Monday.
The Context
Musk is the richest person in the world with a current net worth of $413 billion, per Forbes. The SpaceX founder—who purchased Twitter in 2022 and changed its name to X in 2023—has two degrees from the University of Pennsylvania: a Bachelor of Science in economics and Bachelor of Arts in physics.
The former head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) made headlines recently following his social media messages directed at President Donald Trump. Their friendship turned sour over the administration's One Big Beautiful Bill, which includes tax cuts and an increase to the national debt ceiling.

What To Know
On Friday's episode of Real Time With Bill Maher, the host spoke about Musk for over six minutes. When Maher alleged Musk had "developed a drug habit," the 53-year-old spoke out.
"Bill Maher says Elon Musk developed a drug habit," X account @cb_doge captioned a segment of the HBO show. "This is mass propaganda trying to damage his image, just like they tried in February last year. They failed then, and they'll fail again. Shame on them."
In response, Musk wrote: "I'm not on drugs ffs [for f***'s sake]."
I'm not on drugs ffs 🤦♂️ — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 14, 2025
In the video, Maher said Musk is an "engineering genius who figured out how to do more vital, life-shaping things than anyone since [Thomas] Edison."
He added of Musk's relationship with Trump: "I get it. You were hurt in your previous relationship with the left, so you threw yourself into a bad rebound."
"We've all been there, man. I just want you to look at everything you developed before Trump. The electric car, the reusable rockets, the brain chips—and then look what you developed after Trump: a drug habit," Maher continued, while referencing a Daily Beast article titled: "Insiders Spill on Elon Musk's Frenzied Drug Use."
In May, The New York Times reported the South Africa native had used drugs "intensely" during the 2024 presidential election, and that it went "well beyond occasional use."
Last week, Trump was asked if Musk "had drugs here at the White House," to which Trump responded: "I really don't know. I don't think so. I hope not."
What People Are Saying
The segment about Musk on Real Time with Bill Maher was shared to the show's YouTube channel, where many pushed back on Maher's comment that he is an "engineering genius."
YouTube user @Caramelle58 wrote: "Engineering genius? Doesn't he have a bachelor in economics and a bachelor in physics? Don't think that makes him an outstanding engineer, but he certainly had good instincts in finding the right projects to invest in, the real geniuses need people like him."
@rksherman1 said: "I cringe when I hear Elon Musk referred to as an "Engineer" rather than a wealthy investor who has some comprehension of science who has invested in the right things at the right time. Maybe he could be considered a visionary who had the money to put together the teams that engineered his products, but don't call him an engineer."
@ScottHarper-u4r shared: "He doesn't have a degree in engineering."
Others, meanwhile, defended Musk:
@jacquelineiona1996 posted: "What Bill is saying is why I didn't give up on Elon Musk! I still think he is a genius at engineering."
@sardonicspartan9343 added: "I support Elon and DOGE."
@OldToby33 chimed in: "Love him or hate him, but you can't say Elon isn't a visionary and a genius."

Tired of waiting for Tesla's 'more affordable' car? Check out Nissan's new sub-$30K EV.
Nissan revealed a complete refresh of its LEAF electric vehicle on Tuesday, and it's the cheapest new EV on the US market. The 2026 Leaf has been updated with a new design and an improved EPA-estimated range of 303 miles, adding more than 90 miles of range over its 2025 model. The starting manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) is $29,990, making the LEAF the only sub-$30,000 EV on the market. "Remarkably, its MSRP is lower today than it was when the original LEAF launched in 2011 at $32,780," a Nissan spokesperson told Business Insider in an email. "We've stuck to our mission of engineering EVs that are affordable but packed with value. That's how we've kept the LEAF's price steady over three generations — all while giving owners more style, more technology, more features, and a vastly improved driving range over the original 2011 model." America's transition to electric vehicles has slowed down in recent years. Part of the problem is the lack of affordable options for consumers. The Trump administration's move to ax the $7,500 federal tax credit could also make EVs more expensive. "Nissan is refreshing its product portfolio with new and updated models featuring electrified powertrains, responding to increasing interest in affordable EVs, including those in the sub-$30k price bracket," the Nissan spokesperson said. Even Tesla, the top EV seller in the US for more than half a decade, is not immune to slumping sales and demands for cheaper models. Tesla's most affordable option, the Model 3 sedan, starts at $34,990. In 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk proposed making a "compelling $25,000 electric vehicle." Four years later, his tone shifted, and he called a model at that price "pointless." Still, Tesla said in January that production of "more affordable models" was on track to start in the first half of 2025. During Tesla's second-quarter earnings in July, company executives, including Musk, had zero updates on that progress.

Tesla opens first Kentucky store, selling EVs directly. Could more locations be on the way?
For the first time, Elon Musk-led Tesla is selling its lineup of electric vehicles from a Kentucky store. Tesla has been offering direct vehicle sales to buyers from its 11701 Gateworth Way store since June, according to a Tesla sales advisor, and carries all five Tesla models: Model S, Model 3, Model Y, Model X and the Cybertruck. The location also offers leasing, demo drives, and a service center. The Gateworth Way store, in the Middletown area off Interstate 64, is Tesla's first in Kentucky. Before its opening, Louisville buyers had to trek to Cincinnati to find Tesla's nearest direct sales location. The Louisville-area store has sold about 15-25 vehicles per day since opening, said the Tesla sales advisor, who answered a phone call to the sales department but declined to be named. More: BlueOval SK begins production one week out from pivotal union vote. Here's what that means Kentucky law does not allow auto manufacturers to "own, operate, or control any motor vehicle dealership in the Commonwealth," which generally precludes the direct-to-consumer business models embraced by automakers like Tesla and Rivian. But this law has a caveat: If the Kentucky Motor Vehicle Commission finds there is no independent dealer in the community "to own and operate the franchise in a manner consistent with the public interest," according to the law, the commission can grant a sales license to the manufacturer. Under this provision, Tesla was able to move forward with plans for a store in the metro, several years after opening the Gateworth Way location as a service center. Last year, the Kentucky Motor Vehicle Commission granted Tesla a sales licence for this location, the company's first in the state, The Courier Journal previously reported. Tesla also plans to operate a gallery in the Lexington area, according to the Louisville sales advisor, where prospective buyers can browse the company's lineup of vehicles. The company is hiring for several roles in Lexington, including a gallery manager based at the Fayette Mall, according to job postings on the Tesla website. More: Ford deepens EV investment as incentives vanish: 'The training wheels are coming off' Vehicle sales would not be permitted at the Lexington location without a license from the commission. As of Aug. 18, Tesla has received only one dealer license, granted to the Gateworth Way location, according to state records. The company's media relations team did not respond to a request for comment on the Louisville store's opening or plans for future store locations in Kentucky. Tesla's expansion of direct-to-consumer sales in Kentucky could help boost EV adoption in the commonwealth, where consumers have been relatively slow to make the switch to electric. Kentucky is among the lowest states for EV registrations per capita, and polling shows Americans living the South are especially resistant to buying electric, compared to other regions of the U.S. Contact business reporter Olivia Evans at oevans@ or on X at @oliviamevans_. Elon Musk and JD Vance's Relationship Under Scrutiny Amid 2028 Talk
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Elon Musk is considering backing Vice President JD Vance in the 2028 presidential election, according to reports on the billionaire's political movements. The tech CEO formed a new party and pledged to contest both Republicans and Democrats at the 2026 midterms, but his relationship with Vance, who considers Musk a personal friend, may not be as damaged as it seems. Newsweek has contacted Musk via email to the X press office for comment. Why It Matters With Trump constitutionally ineligible to run for a third term, Vance is the closest thing the GOP has to an heir apparent. As Trump's vice president, he is a favorite take the Republican nomination in the next presidential election, though 2028 remains a long way off. Musk, who campaigned prominently with the Republican ticket last year, has claimed credit for Trump's 2024 victory, and while some in the White House may disagree, Musk's $300 million-deep pockets would be a significant asset in 2028, regardless of who runs. What To Know Vance, who has described Musk as a "very good friend," had hoped for a reconciliation between the billionaire and the White House at the height of their feud in June. Now, the vice president's wish may have come true as Musk is considering rolling back his pledge to contest Republican seats in Congress and supporting Vance in a 2028 run, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Musk has been "focused in part on maintaining ties" with Vance, sources close to him told the outlet. While Musk announced plans in July to form an America Party, which could split Republican votes in close seats in 2026, he has since expressed concern that his support for the party would damage his relationship with the vice president, The Wall Street Journal reported. He has also expressed interest in using his finances to back Vance should he run in 2028, the outlet said. Musk responded to the report on Wednesday, writing on X, "Nothing @WSJ says should ever be thought of as true." Getty Images Musk and Vance remained cordial even when Musk was feuding with the White House over the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, with Vance being one of the only figures in the Trump administration that did not draw Musk's ire on social media. When Musk departed from the White House in May, Vance said in a Newsmax interview: "I am going to miss him. Elon's become a very good friend over the campaign and certainly over his time in Washington. He and his kids have come to our house and had dinner with our kids. I'm very close to him." The two have moved in the same groups for years, with both of them, alongside other members of Trump's inner circle, having a close relationship with venture capitalist Peter Thiel. Vance is something of a protégé to Thiel, who pushed him to run for the Senate in Ohio and later introduced him to Trump at Mar-a-Lago in a 2021 meeting Thiel set up. Musk and Thiel are both members of the "PayPal mafia," a group of investors named after the company they cofounded. They also share many views on the development of tech in the future of humanity. What People Are Saying Vice President JD Vance said in an interview with Theo Von in June, during the height of Musk's anger with Trump: "I'm the vice president to President Trump. My loyalty is always going to be with him. I think that Elon is an incredible entrepreneur. He's done a lot. I think DOGE was really good. This effort to root out waste, fraud and abuse in our country was really good. "Look man, I'm always going to be loyal to the president, and I hope that eventually Elon comes back into the fold. Maybe that's not possible because he's gone so nuclear, but I hope it is." What Happens Next It remains to be seen whether Musk will proceed with his America Party. If Vance intends to run in 2028, he likely won't announce for quite some time.
