Co says can't give 50 iPads in 1 wk, govt cancels order
Mumbai: The state govt on Friday cancelled the work order to buy 50 iPads for ministers and select officials after the supplier said the devices cannot be delivered at short notice.
Govt had in April decided to provide iPads for Rs 1.6 crore for implementation of its e-cabinet system.
On June 4, it issued the work order, asking the supplier—Radius Systems Pvt Ltd—to deliver 50 iPads within a week. Officials said that the company emailed the general administration department two days later, expressing its inability make the delivery on time, prompting govt to cancel its order.
RTI activist Vijay Kumbhar questioned how the firm was selected when it can't even fulfil such a small order. "The contractor says delivering 50-60 iPads in a week is not possible! Does that make sense to you?" he posted on X. "Tenders were even invited. At that very moment, I had raised a question. For ministers who don't even have official email IDs, what exactly is the use of an iPad? A toy? Who found a contractor who can't even supply 50-60 iPads? How was his tender approved? Is this just administrative incompetence or something more?" he asked.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta will offer floral tributes to the National Capital's first Chief Minister Chaudhary Brahm Prakash on Monday on his 107th birth anniversary, an official said. Delhi government ministers and legislators will also pay tribute to the veteran leader at the Legislative Assembly's event to commemorate the birth anniversary of former CM and freedom fighter. The Assembly Secretariat has also made arrangement for Freedom Fighters to pay tribute to the first Delhi CM, an official said. Chaudhary Brahm Prakash became the first Delhi CM in 1952 and held the office till 1955. Earlier, Speaker Gupta hailed Chaudhary Brahm Prakash's efforts for upliftment of villagers and development in Delhi. On Saturday, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju commended Speaker Gupta for steps taken for the quick introduction of e-Vidhan (Paperless Assembly) system in Delhi Assembly for transparent and efficient governance. Laying the foundation of the e-Vidhan (Paperless Assembly) in the presence of Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, the Union Minister said: 'The laying of the foundation stone for the e-Vidhan Project at the Delhi Legislative Assembly is a commendable step towards adopting technology for legislative efficiency and transparency.' He recalled the days of President's Rule in Delhi in 2014 when he prayed for election of an efficient and dedicated government. 'Now, I can say Delhi has got an that kind of responsive government. The e-Vidhan system is being implemented within 108 days, with the sanction of Rs 9 crore,' he said. Calling a legislature the heart of a government and democracy, he said the efficiency of the Assembly is indispensable for an efficient government. 'This event marks a significant milestone in the digitisation of legislative governance,' he said. 'While several states have already implemented the e-Vidhan system successfully, it is encouraging to see Delhi joining this important national initiative. As Centre mulls easing norms for local telecom gear makers, GX Group flags import surge risk
New Delhi: Relaxation in value-addition norms for domestically-manufactured telecom equipment without proper guardrails may enhance risk of imports from non-trusted sources, a top official of GX Group has said. The Department of Telecom (DoT) has started a review of local value-addition norms in telecom equipment following reports that manufacturers are facing a challenge in achieving 50-60% local content in electronic and telecom products due to limited component ecosystem in the country. The move comes at a time when the government has rolled out a Rs 23,000-crore electronics component manufacturing scheme to enhance local value addition in domestically manufactured electronic products. "The consideration of a review to local content norms is a welcome move, however, relaxations need to come with caution on specific components. "Reducing value addition without utmost caution can enhance risk of increase in imports from non-trusted nations," GX Group CEO Paritosh Prajapati told PTI. GX Group is a beneficiary under the telecom sector's production linked incentive (PLI) scheme. The company has its manufacturing facility in Manesar and a research and development centre in Chennai. "The security-sensitive telecom equipment segment is already being infested from imported products, which is mitigating growth of indigenous production under telecom PLI scheme ," Prajapati said. The DoT on June 3 invited comments on the review of the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India ) from industry bodies -VoICE, TEMA, ICEA, COAI and MAIT, original equipment makers --Tejas, VVDN, HFCL, Nokia, Ericsson and CISCO. It has also invited comments from electronics manufacturing services companies Dixon, Syrma, Neolync and Jabil as well as public sector firms like BSNL and TCIL. The DoT has given 30 days for stakeholders to submit their comments. Prajapati said that GX Group and other industry stakeholders have been completely focused on indigenisation mandates and have built a robust local manufacturing ecosystem along with local R&D and IP rights in the past few years. He said that given the Indian component space is still growing somewhat, relaxations of the norms may bring in some relief to the industry for specific components only to ensure that Indian players become more competitive. "Foreign companies coming in to cater to the diverse Indian market should also invest in R&D within the country and make efforts to maximise local production of required components and sub-components," Prajapati said. He said that there are instances wherein global players expand into the market but rely on assembling of products rather than creating products and adding value, in a way not investing in the local economy but only ready to cater to the market demand and enhance revenues. "Relaxation in value addition norms should be accompanied with conditions like technology transfer, timeline for capacity development in India, phase-wise manufacturing programme, etc," Prajapati said.
