'You get the GST cash twice a year, but you pay GST every day': RDU's Philemon calls for GST to be lowered in first GE2025 rally
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) should be lowered back to seven per cent, said Red Dot United's (RDU) secretary-general Ravi Philemon on Saturday (April 26) at the party's first rally in this General Election.
The sparse crowd at the Bukit View Secondary School, numbering just about a hundred or so, broke into a smattering applause as Philemon spoke of reducing GST.
"You get the GST cash twice a year, but you pay GST every day," he said.
"Give chicken wing and take back the whole chicken."
He also spoke about the difficulties of finding jobs after retrenchment in Singapore with a high inflow of foreign workers.
"It is not unreasonable to ask for steady jobs and steady incomes," he said.
"We don't want freelancing jobs," Philemon said. "Many of us, we have families children and commitment. Even if you are single, you still have bills to pay.
"Largely, Singaporeans feel like we are digging deeper into our pockets."
He shared that in the party's walkabouts, residents have shared they feel like "second-class citizens".
"Singaporeans have to be first-class citizens in their own home," he said. "Make Singapore fairer for all who call it home."
He outlined RDU's proposed schemes targeting economic, housing and healthcare issues, with the new 5Cs: CDC vouchers, cash handouts, CPF top-ups, conservancy rebates, and CHAS card discounts.
Philemon also promised to prioritise citizens in housing, jobs and opportunities, and to push for more transparency of national data and information.
There were cheers when RDU's candidates for Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC took the stage.
Liyana Dhamirah, who is recontesting in the GRC, riled up the crowd when she asked: "Have your lives improved in the past five years?"
Liyana shared that she met a resident who had to choose between going for a medical appointment or buying a meal.
"How dignified is it to have to depend on handouts to survive," she said as she acknowledged Government support schemes.
Fellow candidate Osman Sulaiman said: "Tackling the cost of living isn't a slogan for us. It's our priority."
Philemon took to the stage again just before the rally ended at 10pm.
Standing with his party members, he said Singaporeans should forge a "new social compact" that is based in collective prosperity, housing security and resilient economy.
Philemon then asked the crowd to take the pledge together and started chanting "RDU" before the rally ended.
Fifteen candidates will represent RDU across four constituencies at Jurong Central SMC;Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC; Holland-Bukit Timah GRC and Nee Soon GRC, where Philemon is heading its five-member slate.
All 15 candidates spoke at the rally.

Income Insurance chairman Ronald Ong to retire from role after seven years at helm
[SINGAPORE] Income Insurance chairman Ronald Ong will retire from his role after seven years at the helm, the company announced on Monday (Jun 9). The board has begun a succession process to appoint a new chairman and further details will be shared at the upcoming annual general meeting on Jun 24, the company said in a statement. Lim Boon Heng, chairman of Income's parent NTUC Enterprise, expressed his appreciation for Ong's leadership over the past seven years at Income. 'Ronald remains on the NTUC Enterprise board and will be steering the private investment portfolio within NTUC Enterprise going forward, leveraging his deep expertise, wide network, and strong commitment to create value for customers and shareholders,' Lim added. Ong has been serving on the board since 2018 and was appointed chairman in 2019. He led the corporatisation of NTUC Income Insurance Co-operative to Income Insurance in 2022. He had also led Income Insurance through the Covid-19 pandemic and has helped to enhance its digital capabilities. Sign Up Sign Up It was previously reported that Ong had recused himself when Morgan Stanley was appointed as the financial adviser for the proposed sale of Income to German insurer Allianz. At the time of his appointment as Income chairman, Ong had been working at Morgan Stanley for 20 years. In February 2023, he was appointed chairman of the bank's South-east Asia business. The 1.5 billion euro (S$2.2 billion) sale, announced a year ago, was cancelled months later in October 2024 when the government amended the Insurance Act to facilitate cancelling of the deal. In calling off the sale, it said it was 'not in the public interest' for the transaction to proceed in its current form. Culture, Community and Youth Minister Edwin Tong added that the government was still open to any new arrangement which Income may wish to pursue, whether with Allianz or other partners, as long as the concerns were fully addressed. The decision came after much public disquiet over the deal, which also became a major talking point during the 2025 General Election campaigning. NTUC secretary-general Ng Chee Meng, who stood as a candidate for Jalan Kayu SMC, said the deal was done in 'good faith' and complied with legal regulations. 'In NTUC, we will do our best, and sometimes I'm sorry that it's not good enough. But we will learn the right lessons and we will do better,' he said. Ng won the Jalan Kayu seat by a slim 51.47 per cent of the vote.

Arina East Residences sells 10 out of 107 units at average price of S$3,000 psf as booking opens
[SINGAPORE] Freehold development Arina East Residences sold about 9 per cent of its 107 units on Saturday (Jun 7), at an average price of about S$3,000 per square foot (psf). According to PropNex, seven units of the two-bedroom apartment, a three-bedroom, and two four-bedroom units were moved, with the transacted unit prices of these 10 apartments ranging from about S$2,880 to S$3,250 per square foot. The majority of the buyers of the Tanjong Rhu Road project by ZACD LV Development are believed to be Singaporeans, the real estate agency said in a media statement on Saturday. Chief executive officer of PropNex, Ismail Gafoor, said: 'Typically, we have observed that smaller projects with around 100 units in the development tend to see a more measured take-up rate at first, unlike the bigger projects with more units for buyers to choose from… Similar to many other smaller projects, we expect sales will likely move at a gradual pace over the coming months.' ERA, one of the joint marketing agents for the project, noted that the development only had a one-week preview before opening for sales bookings during school holidays, and that Saturday was a public holiday. CEO of ERA Singapore, Marcus Chu, pointed out that it was the first project launched in the area in a decade, and buyers recognised the project's strong potential for capital appreciation. 'The future BTO (Build-to-order) supply in the vicinity is projected to support investor exit strategies, providing a ready pool of upgraders in the long term.' While some agencies called the average price 'competitive', Nicholas Mak, chief research officer at property search portal said that it is higher than its competitors, and that most homebuyers appear to be more price sensitive, especially in the current uncertain economic climate. 'Real estate developers have held back their project launches since April 2025 as the uncertain economic outlook hammers sentiments in the property market. Arina East Residences is the first major residential project to test the water since April. It appears that the market sentiment is still not favourable for project launches,' he said. Arina East Residences is built on the site of the former La Ville, a 40-unit property that was acquired by ZACD Group in December 2021 for S$152 million.
