Celebrating their savoury seven!

melissa@ Bahrain-based group of dosa demolishers Bahrain Masala Dosa Meetup are set to celebrate another year around the sun on Saturday, June 28, marking seven years of savouring the stuffed and spiced Indian crepe across eateries in the kingdom. Fans of the dish will gather, this time at Divya Amudham in Segaya, to sample their version of the fermented rice and lentil creation, which emerged from the South Indian state of Karnataka in the 20th century but, overtime, has gained admiration from foodies around the world. Recently, YouTube was abuzz with reels by Indian content creators, filming their creative takes of the trending 'Dosa, Idli, Sambar, Chutney, Chutney' jingle. Prior to that, eight-Michelin star British celebrity chef and restaurateur Gordon Ramsey featured the 'spicy pancake' on his popular TV show Gordon Ramsey's Home Cooking. For the uninitiated, Masala Dosa is a crispy crepe-like dish stuffed with spiced potatoes and typically served with coconut chutney and sambar – a lentil and vegetable stew. Variations like Spring Dosa, stuffed with Chinese stir-fried noodles and spinach dosa, exhibitng a vibrant green, spinach-infused crepe, among others are also served at some local restaurants. 'As we celebrate this milestone, I want to thank each and every one of you who has been part of this journey – your presence, laughter, and stories have made this group truly special,' said the group's coordinator Keyem Thomas, who is also a 'laughter ambassador', promoting the practice of laughter as a form of well-being. 'Back in June 2018, when Sushma Gupta, Neil Desai, and I first dreamed of creating a group that celebrates South Indian breakfast and meaningful conversations, we never imagined how far it would go. Today, we are a family of over 40 members from different walks of life — doctors, teachers, engineers, athletes, Toastmasters, and more — all brought together by our mutual appreciation for food and friendship,' the 63-year-old from Zinj, who came to Bahrain in 1987, told GulfWeekly. United by their love for the humble dish, the group has explored numerous restaurants, staging monthly gatherings since 2018, give or take an occasional pandemic shutdown, with old members leaving the kingdom and newbies signing up to take up their places for the culinary sessions. 'We were surprised to learn that this delicious dish has 600 varieties,' Irish-English couple Shakti and Dominic McPolin, who have been part of the group for a year, said. 'This lovely bunch has given us the opportunity to try the breakfast dish in different restaurants in Bahrain. If dosa was available throughout the day, this would be our go-to.' The group's motto, 'Meet, Greet, and Eat', continues to unite and guide the foodies. 'It's not just about breakfast — it's about connection, culture, and community. Each meetup is a reminder of the joy that simple things can bring when shared with the right people. Here's to many more years of crispy dosas, delicious sambars, and cherished mornings together,' Keyem said. The upcoming meetup on Saturday starts at 8am - all are welcome. Tales for all

Bahrain-based author Tajammul Kothari has penned his way into the fiction genre with his latest collection of short stories, spanning themes like romance, crime, children's literature and more, writes Melissa Nazareth. The Indian expatriate, who works as an administration manager with a local construction company, launched Mixed Bag – Short Stories on Amazon in April. The 134-page collection of 16 tales caters to 'every taste' as it explores a gamut of sentiments, from love and betrayal to racism and power struggles. 'After publishing my poetry books, I took a break from full time writing due to work and life pressures, and was only concentrating on writing short articles for my blog: However, the idea of writing fiction was always there at the back of my mind,' said the creative talent from Riffa, who was born and raised in the kingdom and attended the Indian School. In a previous interview with GulfWeekly, Tajammul noted that his foray into writing began with his blog and when he saw his readership grow, it spurred him on to experiment with different styles; poetry came to him naturally and eventually, became a 'passion'. 'Seeing a positive response to An Ode to Life and Unanswered Verses, my confidence surged and I took a step forward and published Mixed Bag – Short Stories. I hope it will receive the same appreciation and support as my previous works.' Not one to rest on past laurels, Tajammul is currently working on a novella inspired by Bahrain. 'Bahrain holds a very special place in my heart as I have lived in this wonderful country for so many years. My next book will feature this beautiful island and its people; it will have an ensemble characters from all over the world with one of the characters residing here in Bahrain,' he revealed. An excerpt from Retribution, one of the short stories, reads: 'In the evening, Rupert goes through the photographs and sees something unusual. He takes out his magnifying glass from his desk drawer and zooms in. He notices the name of the bookstore in the background. Memories are recollected as it is the same bookstore he used to visit so regularly in his hometown, Riverwell. He scratches his head and wonders if he has seen the girl somewhere, but he cannot recall.'

Massive response for registrations in Aalekh painting contest next week

With just a week to go, Aalekh '25, the Platinum Jubilee edition of The Indian School, Bahrain's celebrated inter-school painting competition, is generating overwhelming enthusiasm from schools across the Kingdom and beyond. Over 1,000 students have already registered as of yesterday, with final participation expected to exceed 3,000 — making it the largest edition of Aalekh to date. Organised as part of ISB's year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Aalekh '25 is shaping up to be more than just a painting contest. Scheduled for April 24 and 25 at the school's Isa Town campus, the event promises a vibrant blend of art, creativity, and cultural exchange. This year's competition welcomes students aged 5 to 18, divided into four agebased categories: Drishya, Varna, Srushti, and Pragna. Each group will work with mediums suited to their age — ranging from colour pencil to crayons — to create their masterpieces on-site. General Convener Mr. Sasidharan M and Convener Mr. Devadas C have expressed their delight at the growing response, reaffirming ISB's commitment to promoting artistic talent and cultural inclusivity across school communities. The two-day celebration begins on April 24 at 6pm.
