Former Midlothian primary school in historic building to become day care centre

A former primary school is to be turned into a day care centre for council and charitable organisations in Midlothian.
The Category-C listed Bonnyrigg Infant School building dates back to the 19th century and was most recently used as council offices but closed five years ago.
Now an application by Midlothian Council for Listed Building Consent to convert it into a new use has been given the go ahead by its planning authority.
The centre will support two new neighbouring buildings which are currently under construction and will provide extra care housing and a care home.
The school building will be turned into a day care service that will be shared between council services and third sector day care providers.
A report into the plans says the existing hall space within the building will be re-purposed as a gathering/social space for building users with offices in the bays at either end.
It says much of the work to convert the building has already been improved with changes to chimneys, external cladding. doors and windows proposed.
The former school is listed as a single storey building in Queen Anne style with an octagonal, domed bellcote with a weather vane to centre.

"Do you suffer from pigmentation/melasma/sun spots?," she asked. "Okay guys I have been in the sun all day, always wear my factor 50 and my hat but I think with melasma you still get affected with just the heat so I always try and keep my face really cool. "That's a tip that I learnt, but I'm going to see Rebecca now but look," she gestured as she pointed her face towards the camera. "I don't know if you can see this all kind of multiplied again come back, this is me completely bare faced." She continued: "You can see it here there's definitely a difference between freckles. I love freckles, love to embrace them, but sun spots, melasma, pigmentation is different and can be quite ageing. "She always teaches me things and has new techniques that I've never heard of before which are incredibly effective." The star added: "So we are going to go today with pico, really quick easy. I don't think there's any down time so yeah, let's get rid of this." Elsewhere, Laura took to Instagram last week following her house move in a gushing post over how lucky she is in her new home alongside daughter Bonnie, who she shares with ex Gary Lucy. Bonnie and her dog Buddy will certainly have no lack of space in the new home. The influencer was delighted to update fans that her dog was finally coming home, after being away from them for a few months when he didn't settle in her previous Glasgow flat.

Edinburgh set for new burger joint as popular chain expands

More info A new burger joint is set to open in Edinburgh as a popular chain expands. Shakedown are launching their second spot in the city, after their first Scottish restaurant opened in Corstorphine back in 2023. The new venue, on Milton Road West, replaces what was Sam's Fry. An opening date for the eatery has not yet been announced. Images show work currently underway at the unit. The chain currently have three eateries in Manchester, one in London, and will soon have two in Edinburgh. Their website reads: "We've been told our burgers are the best in Manchester. Shipping tank to help develop tropical seafood in Midlothian
Scientists will use a shipping container to help them develop tropical seafood using artificial intelligence on land in Midlothian. Midlothian Council planners have given the go ahead for the container to be placed on Dryden Farm, Roslin, which is owned by the University of Edinburgh, at a historic battle site. A report from planning officers says the shipping container will be used to store equipment which will help with the 'development of AI powered aquaculture systems for growing tropical seafood in Scotland'. The application for the shipping container which will be based on hardstanding next to buildings already in use at the Roslin site, was granted permission by planners this week. Despite being placed on part of the Battle of Roslin, battlefield site, planners said the container would not impact the site and Historic Environment Scotland made no objection to its use. Research into using AI to produce systems which can produce seafood has been hailed as groundbreaking by the industry as it aims to find ways to farm fish sustainably. The Roslin Innovative Centre last month revealed a firm it was working with had received funding from Scottish Enterprise among others which will allow it to advance its technology towards commercialisation. The technology was described by the centre as a 'groundbreaking, sustainable aquaculture system designed to produce fresh, antibiotic-free tropical seafood locally—right where it's consumed'. Granting permission for the shipping container, planners said: 'Dryden Farm is a long established development within the green belt and the use and size of the proposed container will ensure that it will not have a detrimental impact on the objectives of the green belt. 'The scale, character and appearance of the unit will be in keeping with the character of the wider farm complex and there will be no impact on the landscape setting of the battlefield site.'
