Is a heatwave on the way in the UK?

BBC News28-05-2025

As soon as schools broke up for the half-term holidays, the weather turned noticeably more unsettled, with rain making a return—right on cue. This follows an extraordinary spring, which has been one of the sunniest and driest on record. With a few days of the school holiday remaining, the weather is set to turn warm for some—but is a heatwave on the way?
Temperatures are set to rise across England and eastern Wales over the next few days, as a weak ridge of high pressure builds over the south of the UK.In the warmest areas, temperatures are expected to reach 23°C on Thursday, climbing to 25°C on Friday and 26°C on Saturday. Is this a heatwave? To officially classify as a heatwave, temperatures must exceed a specific threshold for three consecutive days. This threshold varies across the UK by region but typically ranges between 25°C and 28°C (77°F to 82°F).We probably won't see temperatures reach the heatwave threshold anywhere, and certainly not for 3 consecutive days - therefore it's definitely not going to be a heat wave. The highest temperature recorded this month also looks well out of reach.Well, is it a mini-heatwave then? Meteorologists don't have an official definition for a "mini-heatwave," so it's not a term we use to describe the weather. We'd be more likely to refer to it as "a few warm days."Meanwhile low pressures will continue to bring rain and showers to north England, Scotland and Northern Ireland over the next few days. Temperatures will remain slightly above the May average, and it will feel pleasant whenever the sun breaks through the clouds.
Is a June heatwave on the way?
June is the first month of summer, so it's not unusual to have hot spells of weather. We may see some hot air move in from Europe around the 10th of June, potentially pushing temperatures into the high 20s or low 30s Celsius. However, it's far too early to say for certain, as this forecast looks nearly two weeks ahead.Any hot weather could also come with the risk of some big thunderstorms. We'll be keeping an eye on how the forecast evolves over the next week or so to narrow down these details.

Moment runaway BULL charges down streets of Birmingham & grinds traffic to a halt while being chased by cops

A BULL has been spotted running loose on the streets of Birmingham. West Midlands Police rushed to the scene after receiving reports that the animal was loose in public. 4 Police and the council worked to ensure the animal was taken to a safe location. The bull was initially spotted roaming around Small Heath but he managed to cover most of the East of Birmingham on his journey. He was eventually captured and taken to safe and more suitable environment. Video footage of the large bull running along a pavement was shared to social media. The bull appeared to be having a grand time as nervous cops stood by and watched. Passing motorists stopped to watch the beast as it trotted along in the city centre. It is unclear where the bull came from or how it got loose. He appeared to be having a good time, running along the road and on pavements quite happily. No injuries were reported and the bull doesn't appear to have been aggressive. Motorists can be seen in footage stopping their cars and watching in disbelief as the animal ran past them. Looking slightly confused the bull eventually makes its way onto the road before charging away from the camera towards a roundabout. Boasting a pair of menacing horns and a yellow ear tag the bull posed an intimidating sight. At one point the bull can be seen charging towards a lorry before stopping and changing its mind about goring the huge vehicle. 4 4 Cars and pedestrians can be seen in footage moving away from the animal as it runs around exploring the city. While it didn't appear aggressive, bulls can weigh up to 1,000kg and pose a serious risk of injury to humans. Councillor Majid Mahmood, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport said: "This magnificent animal seemed to be enjoying an unexpected city break." "Well done too to our animal welfare staff and park rangers who are ensuring it is safe and well and the public are safe." West Midlands police said: 'We were made aware of a bull in the road near New Bond Street in Birmingham at just before 9.30am today. "We're liaising with Birmingham city council and other agencies to ensure the animal is taken to a safe location.' Birmingham is frequently associated with bulls, with its main shopping centre, named the Bullring, boasting a large bronze bull statue at its entrance. 4

Huge Derby chance Ruling Court could be PULLED from race at last minute amid dire weather warning for Epsom

HUGE Derby chance Ruling Court could be pulled from the race at the last minute - amid a dire weather warning for Epsom. The 2,000 Guineas hero is as short as 9-2 second-fav for the world's most famous Flat race. 1 But ITV Racing presenter Ed Chamberlin reported trainer Charlie Appleby is having doubts over his participation. A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and hail is in place for Epsom on Saturday. While a deluge of rain is set to fall overnight. Godolphin trainer Appleby saw red-hot Oaks favourite Desert Flower get turned over by Aidan O'Brien's Minnie Hauk. Chamberlin said: "Charlie felt it was the track rather than the trip that hindered Desert Flower. "And when talking about tomorrow, he said if it gets very wet and messy and they start coming to the stands' side, they might just have a think about whether to run Ruling Court or not." The school has been under the management of the Northamptonshire-based Nene Education Trust since Coleman told parents that the Department for Education approached Meridian Trust."Of their 30 academies, 14 are secondaries and they have a successful track record of supporting schools," he said."It is our opinion that they are a perfect fit for Manor and the school will thrive whilst in their care." The timescale for the transfer is as yet unclear although parents have been told the school hopes it will be complete by the new transfer will leave Nene Education Trust with no secondary school and seven primaries.
