New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday said that the Modi government is committed to giving greater emphasis to smaller entrepreneurs.
In a statement, the finance ministry stated that Sitharaman made those remarks in Leh, Ladakh, while addressing a credit outreach programme, underscoring the Government of India's commitment to financial inclusion, last-mile delivery of credit, and the integration of Ladakh's unique cultural identity into the broader developmental framework.
As part of the credit reach, loan sanctions exceeding ₹5.13 crore were disbursed under key central schemes such as MUDRA, PMEGP, Stand-Up India, and PM Vishwakarma. Beneficiaries ranged from homestay owners and artisans to small-scale entrepreneurs, reflecting the government's focus on micro-enterprise and self-employment, the statement noted.
Sitharaman highlighted that over 64,000 MUDRA loans and more than 600 Stand-Up India loans have been sanctioned in Ladakh, with a significant share in Leh district alone. Public Sector Banks have shown increased credit activity in the region, with total loan sanctions rising steadily over the last two financial years, the finance ministry said in its statement. The FM also commended the expansion of financial infrastructure in Ladakh, with over 500 banking touchpoints and increasing deployment of banking correspondents.
Reaffirming the Centre's vision for Ladakh, the finance minister reiterated that financial growth must include cultural heritage, the statement noted.

Operation Sindoor a restrained operation guided by justice, not provocation: Rajnath Singh

Pachmarhi (Madhya Pradesh): Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, addressing the BJP's three-day training camp in Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh, reiterated 'Jinh mohi mara, te mai maare…' (I struck those who struck me) from the Ramcharitmanas, invoking the spirit behind India's recent Operation Sindoor. His message came just weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 civilians, including a Nepali national, were killed by Pakistan-backed militants. Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, was India's measured yet assertive response, targeting nine terror hubs linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Defence Minister Singh described it as a restrained operation guided by justice, not provocation. Amid this backdrop of national resolve, the Defence Minister addressed more than 200 BJP MPs and MLAs at the camp in the hill station Pachmarhi, once a colonial settlement, delivering a powerful message about leadership, morality, and public duty. He reminded party leaders that power in a democracy is never permanent and must be wielded with humility. Today the mandate may rest with one leader, he said, but tomorrow it may shift elsewhere. 'Therefore, arrogance must be avoided and public service embraced with honesty and accountability,' the Defence Minister said. Rajnath Singh used the platform to remind attendees of the Bharatiya Janata Party's long and disciplined journey from its Jan Sangh origins. Citing icons like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Deendayal Upadhyay, and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, he painted a portrait of political life centred on values, restraint, and dedication to national service. Rajanth Singh's guidance reflected not only his role as Defence Minister but also his stature as a former BJP national president. The training camp, held from June 14 to 16, was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and included 201 BJP representatives. Sessions were organised to deepen ideological understanding and strengthen leadership ethics, with breakout discussions tailored for first-time MLAs as well as experienced legislators. Participants were grouped based on experience—from first-term MLAs to those in their third or ninth term—encouraging peer learning and shared reflection. Several participants reflected on the impact of the session. Concluding the camp, Madhya Pradesh BJP President VD Sharma confirmed that the training was a focused and serious effort to equip lawmakers for principled public life. Though senior BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia and 15 MLAs were unable to attend, the overall turnout and depth of discussion were seen as strong signs of internal cohesion and preparation.

Abhishek raises 5 questions on Pahalgam attack, slams Centre's ‘silence'

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the Centre on Monday over its alleged silence on the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26, including three tourists from Bengal, dead. In a post on X, Banerjee brought up five pointed questions over the Centre's handling of national security, intelligence accountability, foreign policy and global diplomacy. "It is over 55 days since the Pahalgam terror attack. It is deeply concerning that in a democracy neither the mainstream media, members of the opposition, nor the judiciary stepped forward to raise these five critical questions before the Government of India. However, as a citizen committed to the nation's well-being and as a public representative entrusted with accountability, I raise these five questions before the Government of India," Banerjee wrote. On border security, Banerjee wrote: "How did four terrorists manage to infiltrate and launch an attack that killed 26 innocent civilians? Where is the accountability for this massive breach in national security?" He took aim at Intelligence Bureau over the decision to extend the IB chief's tenure just weeks after the attack. "If this was an intelligence failure, why was the IB chief given a one-year extension? Why was he rewarded rather than held accountable? If the GoI can conveniently use Pegasus spyware against opposition leaders (including me), journalists, and even judges, what stops it from using the same tools against terrorist networks and suspects?" Raising concerns over govt's silence on the terrorists involved, Banerjee asked, "Are they dead or alive? If neutralised, why hasn't the govt confirmed it? If not, why the silence?" He also challenged the Centre's stand on reclaiming PoK and demanded a response to the US President Donald Trump's statement claiming he persuaded India into a ceasefire with trade incentives. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Run Your Business Like a Pro - Top Trending Accounting Software (Check Now) Accounting ERP Click Here Undo The Trinamool MP questioned why, despite diplomatic outreach to 33 countries, none had explicitly condemned Pakistan. "If we are truly a Vishwaguru and the world's fourth-largest economy, how did Pakistan receive $1 billion from the IMF and $40 billion in investments post-attack, and then get appointed Vice-Chair of the UN Security Council's Counter-Terrorism Committee?" he asked. "Over Rs 2 lakh crores has been spent on external affairs over the past 10 years. The Indian public deserves transparency, accountability, and results — not silence and spin. The nation awaits a response!" Banerjee said. TMC's reiterated the questions on X, accusing BJP of managing PM Narendra Modi's image rather than addressing critical national security lapses. "India isn't a film set. It's a nation under attack," the party wrote, calling on the PM to break his silence. Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien said the questions were posed "more than as a three-time MP but as a citizen". "Someone needed to call this govt out. Someone needed to hold this govt accountable. Someone needed to ask five direct questions. Abhishek Banerjee did," he added. Echoing the concerns, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: "The Centre has failed to address basic questions of accountability and action. Abhishek Banerjee raised what many are thinking but not saying."

Unemployment in India: Jobless rate rises to 5.6% in May; women face higher unemployment at 5.8%

India's monthly unemployment rate climbed to 5.6% in May 2025, up from 5.1% in April, according to government data released on Monday. The rise can be largely attributed to seasonal factors and reduced rural employment after the end of the Rabi harvest season, the ministry of statistics and programme implementation said in its report. Last month, the ministry rolled out the first monthly edition of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), aiming to track the real-time unemployment proportion of unemployed people among those eligible for jobs, PTI reported. The unemployment rate among women remained slightly higher than that of men in May, at 5.8% compared to 5.6%, as per the latest data collected in the current weekly status. Age wise unemployment rate Young people aged 15–29 faced a particularly steep rise in joblessness, with the national rate for this group jumping from 13.8% in April to 15% in May. Among young women of the same age, including both urban and rural, the figure reached 16.3%, up from 14.4% in the previous month. Meanwhile joblessness among men aged between 15-29 years were recorded at 14.5% in May. Urban vs rural unemployment rate Urban and rural areas both experienced an uptick in unemployment. In urban areas, the rate rose to 17.9% in May from 17.2% a month ago. Rural areas too, saw an increase, from 12.3%, a month ago, reaching 13.7% in May. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Anvisa aprova solução para ajudar a reduzir gordura visceral da barriga em 7 dias! This could be due to reduced agricultural activity following the end of the Rabi harvest season for both men and women, the report noted. Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) also declined to 54.8% in May from 55.6% in April. In urban areas, the LFPR declined to 50.4% from 50.7%. Rural participation dropped more sharply, falling to 56.9% from 58%. Among women in rural areas, LFPR saw a major dip from 38.2% to 36.9%, largely due to fewer women working as casual labourers or unpaid helpers. LFPR among males aged 15 years and above also came down to 78.3% in May from 79% in April. The Worker Population Ratio (WPR), which measures the proportion of working individuals in the population, also declined. Nationally, it slipped to 51.7% in May from 52.8% in April. Female WPR fell more sharply to 31.3% from 32.5%. The May survey covered over 89,000 households and nearly 3.8 lakh individuals across both rural and urban India.
