Nicolas Jackson says he is ‘so angry at myself' after red card in Flamengo loss
Nicolas Jackson apologised after his costly sending-off in Chelsea's Club World Cup implosion against Flamengo.
The Senegal striker was shown a straight red card – just four minutes after coming off the bench – for an aggressive studs-up challenge on Ayrton Lucas in Friday's 3-1 defeat in Philadelphia.
It came amid a calamitous six-minute spell in the second period in which the Blues also conceded two goals to surrender their half-time lead.
It was also Jackson's second dismissal in just four appearances having also been given his marching orders for a forearm crack on Newcastle's Sven Botman in a Premier League match last month.
'I want to say sorry,' Jackson wrote on Instagram on what was a 24th birthday to forget. 'To the club, the staff, my teammates, and all the fans watching, I let you down.
'Another red card… And honestly, I'm so angry at myself. I work hard every day to help the team not to put us in this kind of situation.
'I still don't fully understand how it happened. But one thing is clear: it wasn't intentional. Just a moment in football that went the wrong way.
'No excuses. I take full responsibility. I'll reflect, I'll grow, and I'll come back stronger for the badge and for everyone who believes in me.
'Sorry. Sorry, Sorry.'
Jackson's moment of madness, in which he forcefully caught Lucas on the shin, effectively ended Chelsea's hopes of getting back into the Group D contest at Lincoln Financial Field.
Enzo Maresca's side were already reeling after Pedro Neto's well-taken 14th-minute opener was cancelled out by Bruno Henrique after 62 minutes and quickly followed by another goal for veteran Danilo.
Wallace Yan wrapped up the scoring seven minutes from time, putting Flamengo in charge of the group and potentially making Chelsea's route through the tournament complicated.
Defender Marc Cucurella suggested discipline was an area Jackson needed to work on.
The defender told DAZN: 'He is young player, he has a lot of quality, he maybe needs to improve this a little bit. We are here to improve, we are not perfect so it is part of the game.'
Maresca did not deny the sending-off was damaging, though he tempered criticism by claiming it was not a clear-cut decision.
Maresca said: 'Those six minutes completely changed the dynamic of the game.
'I'm not 100 per cent sure that it's a red card compared to the Newcastle one, but it can be and the referee decided it.
'It's a little bit of a bad moment for Nico in these things. He knows very well that both situations were not something good for the team.'
Former Chelsea defender Filipe Luis, now the manager of Flamengo, backed Jackson to bounce back.
'It was a little mistake,' he said. 'It was a clear red for me but it is a small detail for a player who can be one of the biggest strikers in the world.'
Chelsea, who now have three points from their opening two games, face ES Tunis in their final group game on Tuesday night (2am Wednesday BST).

Nuno rewarded with new three-year contract for guiding Nottingham Forest to European place
Nuno Espírito Santo has signed a new three-year contract after leading Nottingham Forest back into Europe for the first time in almost 30 years. On Friday, Evangelos Marinakis, the Forest owner, was in advanced talks over a long-term deal and an agreement has now been reached with the Portuguese head coach. Nuno was one of the Premier League's managers of the season in the last campaign, guiding Forest to a seventh-placed finish which secured a spot in the Uefa Conference League. Marinakis has been determined to reward him with a new deal, mindful of the fact that the 51-year-old had just over 12 months left on his previous contract. Nuno was appointed in December 2023, replacing Steve Cooper, and endured a difficult first season in which the club battled relegation and were deducted four points for breaching financial rules. Yet in his first full season he performed brilliantly, taking Forest into contention for the Champions League with the league double over Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, plus victories over Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Brighton. Forest also reached the FA Cup semi-final, where they lost to Manchester City at Wembley. Nuno said: 'I am delighted to be able to continue our journey at this fantastic football club. 'Since we arrived at Forest, we have worked extremely hard to create a special bond between the players, the fans and everyone at the Club, which helped us achieve great things last season. 'I would like to thank our owner, Mr Marinakis, for his constant support and backing. It is important to me to share a strong relationship with our ownership and we have thoroughly enjoyed working together ever since I arrived at Forest. 'Now is the time to work harder than ever as we strive for more special memories together.' Marinakis added: 'Nuno has made a great impact and performed very well during his time with us so far. 'He has demonstrated that he maximises player performance and is an expert at developing players, whilst also embedding our young talent into the first team set-up. 'We enjoy a strong and solid relationship together and, above all, we share the same dream and ambition of writing a new history for Nottingham Forest, competing in the Premier League and in Europe and winning trophies for our great club.'

Nuno Espirito Santo signs new three-year deal to stay at Nottingham Forest
The Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has signed a new three-year contract to remain at the City Ground until at least 2028. The 51-year-old guided Forest to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League last season, securing European qualification for the first time since the 1995-96 season. For much of the campaign, it looked as though Forest were going to qualify for the Champions League, but they lost five of their last eight games. However, that has not prevented the club's owner, Evangelos Marinakis, from rewarding Nuno following the club's highest league finish for 30 years, while they also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup before losing to Manchester City. Nuno said: 'I am delighted to be able to continue our journey at this fantastic football club. Since we arrived at Forest, we have worked extremely hard to create a special bond between the players, the fans and everyone at the Club, which helped us achieve great things last season. It is important to me to share a strong relationship with our ownership and we have thoroughly enjoyed working together ever since I arrived at Forest. Now is the time to work harder than ever as we strive for more special memories together.' The former Wolves and Tottenham manager arrived at the City Ground in December 2023 following the sacking of Steve Cooper, and helped the club avoid relegation on the final day of the season. Leeds miss out on huge payday as Liverpool agreement will take spending to £215m
Leeds could have been the club to capitalise on Liverpool's splurging this summer after narrowly missing out on one signing who is now bound for a big-money move to Anfield Premier League newcomers Leeds United could have signed Milos Kerkez before the defender opted for Bournemouth. And that near miss may well hurt all the more as he prepares for an imminent £40million transfer to Liverpool. The Hungarian left-back was one of the Premier League 's unexpected stars of the 2024/25 season. Kerkez featured in all 38 of Bournemouth's top-flight games and notched an impressive six assists along the way. With the summer transfer window now open, it was only a matter of time before the big clubs started showing interest. And Kerkez now looks Anfield-bound, as he prepares to become their latest summer signing. Liverpool have broken the British transfer record, as add-ons could see their deal with Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz cost as much as £116m (with £100m of that being guaranteed payment). The Reds have also signed Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen for £29.5m, and while a deal for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia for an initial £25m with £4m in add-ons was struck last summer, it counts as a 2025 transfer in terms of Liverpool's finances. That would collectively take their total outlay so far to a whopping £214.5m. There's also suggestions that Liverpool are prepared to step up their interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. And the England star will command another hefty fee should he head for Merseyside this summer. Bournemouth shelled out roughly £15.5m to AZ Alkmaar for Kerkez's services in 2023. However, Leeds could have been the ones to pocket nearly £25m in profit from the 21-year-old's sale had they acted more decisively two years ago. Kerkez was just 19 and making waves in the Eredivisie when he first started to attracted attention in England. It was then reported by talkSPORT (via Leeds Live) that Leeds, Leicester City and Bournemouth were all vying for his signature in January 2023. Max Wober had already been brought in to strengthen Jesse Marsch's defence that window. And with Junior Firpo struggling to find form, Kerkez was clearly identified as a talent who could be both a current and future asset. However, Kerkez remained at Alkmaar beyond that January transfer window. And when the summer came around, with Leeds having been relegated, the defender inked a deal to join the Cherries instead. Former Bournemouth chief executive Neill Blake had high praise for the player at the time: "An athletic and attacking full-back, Milos will be an excellent addition to our exciting squad," and described Milos as "Milos [is] a talented young player with a great deal of potential. "He was being tracked by a number of clubs in Europe but was very keen to join us after hearing about our plans and ambitions for the future." Now, it seems that the former AC Milan prospect is set for a big money move to Merseyside. And while one can't guarantee the player would have developed the same way in Yorkshire, Leeds will nonetheless rue such a missed opportunity. Touted as the heir to Andy Robertson, the 31-year-old Scot could soon see Kerkez fill his boots. When The Athletic questioned him about his Liverpool links in March, Kerkez said: "It's not like I don't see it. When people say they don't see stuff if someone says something about you, I think it's a lie. It's only if it hits you or not. "If someone says something bad, I do my job, and if someone says something good, I just do my job. That's it. As a kid, you dream to play at the highest level, win the trophies, be on the best teams. These are the things that my agent is on, my dad is on. In the summer, we will see what happens." With Liverpool appearing to wrap up the signing of Kerkez, Kostas Tsimikas might be tempted to leave for pastures new. And Leeds manager Daniel Farke is reportedly interested in getting the Greek to Elland Road.
