Braves star Acuña to return Friday from left knee injury
WASHINGTON — Ronald Acuña Jr. is ready to make his season debut for the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.
The Braves announced after Thursday night's loss to Washington that Acuña will return from a left knee injury that has sidelined him for nearly a year when Atlanta opens a three-game series at home against San Diego.
The 2023 NL MVP tore the ACL in his left knee last May 26 and had surgery on June 6. Acuña played six games in the minors on a rehab assignment, going 6 for 15 with two home runs.
Acuña played in only 49 games last season, batting .250 with four homers, 15 RBIs, 16 stolen bases and a .716 OPS.
He was a unanimous winner of the NL MVP award in 2023 when he hit .336 with 41 home runs, 106 RBIs and a league-leading 1.012 OPS. Acuña also stole 73 bases that year to become the only player with 40 homers and 70 steals in one season.
A four-time All-Star, the 27-year-old Acuña has 165 homers and 195 stolen bases in 722 career games.

Namely, they moved to get younger and cheaper at the position, trading former No. 1 receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. Advertisement Certainly a bold move on their part, general manager John Lynch has remained steadfast in his commitment to adapt this group while easing the burden on their cap. That line of decision making raised questions about the team's intentions with their new No. 1 Brandon Aiyuk. San Francisco has not been shy about their new strategy, so there has been some sentiment to trading Aiyuk. However, Niners insider Grant Cohn has taken that a step further, urging the team to to work with the Commanders again. This time they would send Aiyuk and return Terry McLaurin in the deal. "McLaurin is older than Aiyuk, but he's also faster than Aiyuk and might have a better relationship with the quarterback. I'm guessing McLaurin would love to play for the 49ers if they extend him. And I'm guessing Aiyuk would love to play with Daniels and Deebo Samuel in Washington." Advertisement Much of that projection involves Aiyuk's relationship with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels who happens to be a very close friend. But a straight-up swap for the two players is not happening. While McLaurin's contract disputes with the team has led to a holdout from mandatory minicamp, trading him away would seem an egregious error for a team on the rise. He consistently posts 1,000 yards and comes off arguably his best campaign yet. Daniels and Aiyuk may have a strong relationship, but sacrificing an arguable top 10 receiver for a player coming off a serious ACL injury makes for an extremely high risk. For the Niners, McLaurin would be great to have in a vacuum. But any trade that happens will still need his extension situation sorted out afterward. The Niners have committed big money to several players this offseason and this would be another. Advertisement McLaurin will likely demand a salary well over $30 million per year and higher than the number Aiyuk sits at now. Pulling off such a trade essentially puts them in the same place financially with a longer commitment to an older receiver. More likely than not, Washington will eventually meet their star at the negotiating table and get a new deal done. SEATTLE (AP) — Nneka Ogwumike had 21 points and 10 rebounds, Erica Wheeler added 20 points and six assists and the Seattle Storm ended Minnesota's season-opening winning streak at nine, beating the Lynx 94-84 on Wednesday night. After Minnesota had a basket taken away following an official review for a shot-clock violation, Skylar Diggins made a 3-pointer to give Seattle (6-4) an 83-79 lead. Diggins also found Ezi Magbegor under the basket for a six-point advantage. Kayla McBridemade a 3-pointer from the wing with 1:07 left to pull Minnesota (9-1) to 85-84, but Wheeler answered with a 3-pointer at the other end. After Alanna Smith missed an open layup under the basket, Wheeler added two free throws with 25 seconds left to seal it. Diggins finished with 18 points and six assists for Seattle. Magbegor had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Gabby Williams had 12 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals. After blowing six-run lead in ninth, Braves call up ex-Red Sox closer

After the collapse, the Braves decided to call up reinforcement from Triple-A in the form of Craig Kimbrel, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported. Advertisement The former Boston Red Sox closer signed a minor league deal with Atlanta in March. In 15 games for the Gwinnett Stripers, Kimbrel has 2.45 ERA with 17 strikeouts and a 1.09 WHIP. The Braves fell to 27-34 with Thursday's loss and are now 11½ games back of first place in the National League East. It's unclear what kind role Kimbrel — who has the fifth-most saves in MLB with 440 — will play for the Braves as they look to get their bullpen on track.
