How traditional Chinese medicine can help you lose weight, from acupuncture to cupping

When Huang Yu needed to lose weight urgently for medical reasons, she turned to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). With it, she lost five kilograms (11 pounds) over three months, and she has kept it off since.

In January 2024, the 21-year-old from Shanghai, who is studying at a university in Hong Kong, learned she had a tumour on her uterus. This slowed her metabolism, and she eventually tipped the scales at 75kg.
If she did not lose weight, her Western doctor told her, the condition would be difficult to treat. He prescribed medication with hormones that helped boost her metabolism, but it left her feeling weak as she started having heavier menstrual periods.
'I had to spare no effort trying different weight-loss methods,' Huang said.

She first tried
intermittent fasting , slowly narrowing the window of time in which she ate during the day. However, she did not lose much weight this way, and fasting left her feeling woozy, especially after her physical education classes at school.

US firm says it made Hong Kong student's award-winning app ‘from scratch'

A US-based software development agency has said it was commissioned by the mother of a Hong Kong student to build from scratch a medication prescription app that was later submitted to academic competitions under the pupil's name without its consent. Advertisement Ahmed Jemaa, co-founder of US-based AI Health Studio, said the company was not told that the MediSafe app it created would be submitted to the contests and argued the move was unfair to other student participants. He also accused the mother of attempting to 'control the narrative' after controversy broke out in June over whether her daughter was the sole inventor of the award-winning project. In a social media post earlier in the week, Jemaa named his client as Roberta Pang, who is the wife of Ronnie Poon Tung-ping, owner of the Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic & Colorectal Surgery Centre. He said she had commissioned his team between March 2024 and June this year to develop MediSafe. Their daughter, a Form Four student from St Paul's Co-educational College in Mid-Levels, has submitted the app in competitions as her invention and has won eight awards in global contests. Advertisement Jemaa said MediSafe was a prototype designed to simulate prescription safety checks, flagging drug-to-drug interactions, allergy contraindications and warnings for renal or hepatic risks.

Hong Kong confirms 3 new imported cases of chikungunya fever

Hong Kong confirmed three new cases of chikungunya fever on Wednesday, comprising a woman returning from Guangdong province's Foshan and a father and son who had travelled to Bangladesh. The Centre for Health Protection on Wednesday said that it was investigating the three imported cases. Health authorities said the woman, 79, lived in Southern district and had visited the mainland Chinese city of Foshan from July 1 to 31 to see her relatives. The patient was unable to recall being bitten by a mosquito, but developed a fever and joint pain on Monday and sought treatment at Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam the next day, the centre said. The other two cases are a 55-year-old man with a chronic disease and his 10-year-old son, who both live in Kwai Tsing district. The pair travelled to Bangladesh between July 12 and August 3. The father first developed symptoms in Bangladesh on July 27 and visited a clinic in Hong Kong on August 4.

How this mum of 2 lost more than 15kg and got her confidence back

Riccinni Banham had always loved sugary and starchy foods, and rarely thought twice before helping herself to extra rice at mealtimes or indulging in gelato, cookies, cake, pastries and chocolate. The Filipino mum-of-two – a former school counsellor and adoption case worker – was an avid runner who had taken part in 54 half-marathons and seven marathons . She was convinced that she could get away with eating as much as she liked of whatever she wanted. She began to notice that as she ate less healthily, her weight would go up. Her self-confidence began to take a hit. 'I stopped weighing myself when I reached 73kg [161lb], because I'd put on about 15kg by then and knew that I was only getting bigger,' says Banham, who stands 157cm (five feet two inches) tall. 'Being overweight affected my mental and emotional health. I didn't feel good about myself, and my clothes no longer fit. I also had difficulty performing physical activities. Hiking uphill was an issue.' Eating gelato and other sweet treats had caused Riccinni Banham to gain weight after she moved to Shanghai.
