Weekly poll results: Apple Watches surprisingly popular, Google and Samsung need to step up their game

While smartphones have converged on pretty much the same formula, there is a wide variety of smart watch/band/ring/etc. devices out there. And the results from last week's poll are quite interesting.
Most of our readers who use a smart wearable have an Apple Watch. We are pretty sure that most of our readers have Android phones, but apparently, they don't use smart wearables all that much.
That aside, Wear OS is surprisingly low – almost half the popularity of Apple's watchOS watches. Other advanced smartwatch platforms (e.g. Huawei) are also more popular than the platform that is primarily supported by Google and Samsung.
Here's another result that we didn't expect – smart bands are more popular than basic smartwatches. Unlike their Wear OS/watchOS counterparts, basic smartwatches offer essentially the same functionality as smart bands.
Their only real advantage is aesthetics – if you want a round watch on your wrist that is. Some smart bands offer great battery life despite smaller batteries and they are cheaper and smaller to boot.
Smart rings are a very new category, so they are still a blip on the radar, as expected. It would be interesting to see how that changes in the next few years.
Smart wearables differ from smartphones in another important way – people are in no rush to upgrade them. More than half the voters in the second poll will be keeping their wearable this year.
We set a relatively short time frame, asking about plans to upgrade this year. But reading through the comments, it's clear that many use watches/bands that are 3, 4 or even 5 years old. Smartphone upgrade cycles are getting longer, but they aren't at that level yet.
Only 7% of voters will be buying their first smart wearable this year, which suggests that the market is becoming saturated – everyone who wanted one, already has one. Of course, our audience is more tech-savvy than most, so buying into more tech gadgets early is not surprising.

I must admit I wasn't a particularly big fan of the Galaxy Watch 8 redesign. At first, I was quick to declare it nothing but proverbial sand in the eyes of Samsung's devoted smartwatch fans, who expected a different set of upgrades (like better battery life). Instead, we got this redesigned squircle-shaped smartwatch that seemed a little too odd and unsmartwatch-like , but definitely reminded us of its close kinship with last year's Galaxy Watch Ultra. On top of it all, the older Galaxy Watch 7 left the impression of being more compact than the newly redesigned Galaxy Watch 8 despite real-life specs telling us otherwise. I can't say the new uniform design language has grown on me; it hasn't. It will probably take a couple of generations before I would be able to feel at home with this latest redesign. Samsung's new smartwatch might eventually grow on me, but it will take some time (Image by PhoneArena) But one aspect of the new Galaxy Watch 8 exterior might turn out to be an unexpectedly great boon for clumsy people like yours truly. When it comes to resilience and sturdiness, Samsung is killing it with the new Galaxy Watch 8 , which comes with both IP68 and MIL-STD 810H certifications, but it's the design itself that hints at superior endurance. But first, let me tell you a story of a domestic disaster that was totally preventable. Okay, normally you can't waterboard such information out of me, but I have to finally admit it was I who cracked the screen of our resident Pixel Watch 2. I should probably be pleading the Fifth, but in my defense, I was dealing with an emergency at the house and had to reach into a particularly tight alcove to turn off the water mains before Poseidon himself emerged from underneath the floorboards. The Pixel Watch sadly had to take one for the team when it met a rough concrete wall face first. Honestly, I'd offload the blame onto Google here: who in their right mind designs a wearable with a curved screen that welcomes danger glass-first? That's a nonfunctional design choice that Google deliberately made, and yet it's just one of the minor issues with the Pixel Watch 2 . The worst part here is that Google's Pixel Watches aren't very repairable, so once you crack the screen or damage the wearable in any other serious way, the only way to fix things is to, well, get a replacement. But I digress. Now, I imagine that if I had the Galaxy Watch 8 on my hand, the potential damage wouldn't have cracked the screen, because the exaggerated case of the smartwatch would have protected the display up top. Sure, that's my anecdotal thinking here, totally in the spirit of the "would've, could've, should've" mantra, but the more practical design of the Galaxy Watch 8 might actually spare klutzes like me from such totally avoidable accidents. The Galaxy Watch 8 definitely looks more dependable in terms of durability (Image by PhoneArena) I'm not a person who chooses wearables for their looks, which might be contrary to what most other people do. Appearances don't really matter to my inner grandpa; give me a functional smartwatch with a sturdy design and great battery life, and I'll be more loyal than a labrador with separation anxiety. An even better choice for those like me would be a newer version of Samsung's one-off Galaxy Watch 5 Pro from a couple of years back, which was one of the first decent rugged Wear OS smartwatches. I really do hope that Samsung hasn't forgotten this smartwatch offshoot after following Apple down the "Ultra" rabbit hole. Well, honestly, I probably wouldn't. It's a nice smartwatch with many features that pairs excellently with Galaxy phones, but I still can't imagine buying a smartwatch that only lasts a full day and requires constant charging. I simply can't force myself to be a slave to such watches, which is why I can't recommend the regular Apple Watches either. Either give me a week-long battery life (which is something the OnePlus Watch 3 does beautifully), or I'll continue checking the time on my microwave. A week ago, a tipster contacted us to say that the Google Pixel 10 Pro will go on pre-order immediately after it gets unveiled on August 20. We wondered whether this time the whole family will launch simultaneously or whether some will arrive late like what happened with the Pixel 9 series. And now we have our answer – due to some delays, the launch will be in two stages. First, the 'regular' phones will arrive on schedule – the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL pre-orders will start on August 20, shipping and open sales will start on August 28. Google Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL (leaked renders) However, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will arrive later, along with the Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Buds 2a, according to sources speaking to WinFuture. These will be available from October 9, around two weeks after the non-folding Pixel 10 trio launches. Pre-orders will likely start on August 20, though. Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Buds 2a (leaked renders) It's not clear what caused the delay – supply chain speed bumps may be the issue, but we just don't know. The Fold shares some components with the rest of its Pixel 10 siblings, like the Tensor G5, for example. That said, there are some things that could have caused headaches – like the first-ever IP68 rating on a foldable. The 10 Pro Fold will also have a bigger battery and a new 6.4' cover display. Android Auto just got a rare design update, but not everyone is happy about it. The update allows your car's display to match your Android phone's wallpaper color palette, bringing a more cohesive visual identity across screens. The seekbar has been moved below the timestamp, and the album art is now smaller, creating what many are calling a cluttered-yet-empty feel — particularly on cars with portrait-oriented displays. Reddit user flcinusa noted that the already-reduced album art looks 'comically tiny' on their display. While the repositioned seekbar may reduce accidental touches, it creates odd spacing and visual imbalance, making better use of the space feel like an afterthought. To be fair, Material You is a big UI leap for Android Auto, which has traditionally been more utilitarian and function-focused. Google has also confirmed it's also working on a light theme, climate control integration, and Gemini AI voice features — all part of a broader push to modernize the platform. But for now, this refresh seems to be the decision based on the users' feedback. And for music lovers used to bold, dynamic album art backgrounds, this latest change might feel more like a step backward than forward.
