Stalin lists questions to ECI, wants SIR scrapped
Chennai: A day after chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar defended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters list, chief minister M K Stalin said ECI's defence raised several questions rather than providing answers. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "How can there be so many deletions of eligible voters when house-to-house enumeration was undertaken," Stalin asked ECI on X, listing out six more questions, on Monday. Saying enrolment of new voters was less, Stalin asked whether young voters were enumerated. "Has any database been compiled to show how many youngsters who turned 18 on the qualifying date were included," he asked. He said the procedure for inquiry and two appeals, under Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, may exclude a huge number of voters in the upcoming Bihar elections. "Is ECI going to address this issue," he asked. "Will ECI take these practical difficulties into account while conducting SIR in other states," he asked. Recalling DMK's petition to ECI on July 17 to delete the deceased votes, Stalin asked when it will be done. He also asked what prevented ECI from enlisting Aadhaar as one of the acceptable documents to prove a voter's claim. He concluded by asking, "If free and fair elections are truly the aim of ECI, why can't it be more transparent and voter-friendly?" Stalin is the latest to join India bloc leaders in criticising ECI for its defence of SIR. While Congress leader Rahul Gandhi flagged a series of issues, including missing voters and the addition of "ghost voters" during SIR in Bihar, other leaders such as Karnataka chief minister K Siddaramaiah also highlighted discrepancies in the data of ECI. Stalin has demanded ECI scrap SIR in other states, particularly TN, and urged DMK functionaries to be wary of addition or deletion of voters in the state.

Pressure on DMK to back CPR, but INDIA bloc mulls options
1 2 Chennai: NDA's decision to field Maharashtra governor C P Radhakrishnan as its Vice-Presidential candidate can put DMK in a political bind as not supporting him could be portrayed as disregarding Tamil pride, a line rivals are expected to play up in the 2026 campaign. A senior DMK leader said an announcement on the party's position would be made soon. Meanwhile, there was speculation that India bloc would field its own candidate, someone from TN in a bid to counter BJP. Among the two names that were being circulated as potential candidates of India bloc were DMK Rajya Sabha MP Trichy Siva and former ISRO project director Mylsamy Annadurai. On Monday, pressure mounted on DMK to back CPR. Union defence minister Rajnath Singh has apparently reached out to chief minister M K Stalin and YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy seeking support for CPR. BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran too said he would meet Stalin for the same purpose. "It would not be fair to stay away when there was an opportunity for a Tamilian to reach a new height,'' he said. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said the nomination of CPR as a candidate was an opportunity for TN to send someone from the state to the Vice-President's office. "A Tamilian has got an opportunity to become a VP. So all MPs from TN should support shedding political differences,'' he said. Tamil Maanila Congress president G K Vasan joined the chorus, calling Radhakrishnan "a son of the soil, admired by all beyond political affiliations" and "a great honour for Tamils". "Even if BJP announced a Presidential candidate from TN, people here will not support them,'' said TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai. CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugham said CPR's nomination would in no way benefit TN. "Tamils have already held the posts of Vice-President and President. So, there is nothing new here,'' he said. Shanmugam further said BJP's candidates would ultimately act on the party's directions rather than functioning independently. Tasmac loot continues in state, says EPS
Chennai: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami alleged that large scale "loot" continues in Tasmac despite DMK facing flak for the irregularities in liquor shops. In Tiruvannamalai on Monday, EPS accused DMK of pocketing proceeds of the 'Tasmac scam'. He said every bottle from TN's 6,000 liquor shops is sold at 10 above maximum retail price, yielding about 450crore a month. "This money goes to DMK's top brass," he alleged. EPS said the amount thus swindled worked out to 22,000crore in the four years since DMK came to power. He said the liquor scam was only one layer of a corrupt system. EPS charged that stone quarries, as well as crusher units, are forced to pay fixed kickbacks, turning governance into a "loot engineered from the top". "Even after govt confirmed violations and suspended licence, no arrests were made till date," he said. Shifting to governance, EPS said chief minister M K Stalin made 575 promises but delivered on less than 10%. He then sought to project AIADMK as the alternative, promising to reopen and expand Amma medical clinics to 4,000 across TN, revive Thaaliku Thangam scheme that benefitted 6 lakh families, and bring back the Amma two-wheeler subsidy scheme that supported 2.8 lakh women.
