Villarreal: Logan Costa undergoes surgery for complete cruciate ligament tear
Logan Costa / Villarreal CF
Logan Costa recently underwent surgery in Madrid after suffering a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The Cape Verdean defender will miss the start of the 2025/26 season with Villarreal in La Liga.
Villarreal's central defender sustained a serious injury to his left knee during the first pre-season match. The incident occurred in Oviedo on July 19 against FC Basel, where Costa collapsed while clutching his knee. Medical tests conducted the following day confirmed a complete anterior cruciate ligament rupture. Logan Costa went under the knife on August 5. The operation was performed by doctors Manuel Leyes and Antonio Maestro at the Olympia Medical-Surgical Center, under the supervision of the club's medical staff, according to the Spanish club.
The 24-year-old Cape Verde international now faces a recovery period estimated at seven months, putting his participation in most of the 2025–2026 season in jeopardy. It's a heavy blow for the Yellow Submarine. Since joining Villarreal in the summer of 2024, Logan Costa has played 34 matches in all competitions, finding the net twice.

Breanna Stewart recovering from bone bruise in knee targets return by end of the month
NEW YORK (AP) — Breanna Stewart is feeling better after suffering a bone bruise in her right knee late last month and hopes to be back by the end of the month. The two-time WNBA MVP hurt her knee in the Liberty's 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on July 26 and talked before New York's game against Minnesota on Sunday. 'I feel great. I just finished working out on the court in the back,' Stewart said. 'And it's really just kind of giving my leg, the bone a little bit of time while we have it. But hoping to be back sooner than later and really just wanting to be back with my team.' Stewart has been rehabbing the injury and Liberty coach Sandy Brondello said she thought her star forward could be back by the end of August. 'I feel like this is the hardest part for me because I've been out. Like I've been out, but I'm not usually out when I can go back in. So I want to be back,' Stewart said. One non-negotiable Stewart said was that she wanted to be back before her birthday on Aug. 27. 'I'm on the training staff to let me be back to free me a little bit. But definitely, like, before my birthday,' she said. Stewart celebrated her daughter Ruby's fourth birthday on Saturday, taking her to a trampoline park. 'I wasn't planning on being injured, so it's a little bit less than ideal,' she said. Stewart felt the injury in her knee in the loss to Los Angeles. She had three points and a rebound. ''It was like when I stepped, I just like felt something in my knee a little bit, but I don't know, I think I just irritated it," she said. A seven-time All-Star, Stewart is averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists. Stewart was disappointed that she will miss all the games with Minnesota in a WNBA Finals rematch as the two teams play four times in a three-week span that Stewart is out for. 'I hate this, but I'll be on the bench,' she said. ___ AP WNBA:

Real Madrid midfielder ruled out of La Liga opener due to injury
Real Madrid start their 2025-26 season in nine days' time as they host Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabeu, but it appears that they will be without an important player for Xabi Alonso's first La Liga match. Alonso will have big decisions to make on his first starting line-up of the season – especially in midfield. If he uses a 4-2-3-1 as expected, there will be question marks about who plays alongside Federico Valverde as one of the two pivots in that system. Aurelien Tchouameni is the favourite, but there is also an opportunity for Eduardo Camavinga. Camavinga is seeking redemption during the 2025-26 campaign, having had a poor last 12 months. Real Madrid have kept their faith in him, but they will be clear that he needs to return to his best level in order to remain at the Bernabeu long-term. But unfortunately for Camavinga, he looks set to miss the La Liga opener against Osasuna, with Real Madrid confirming that he has suffered an ankle injury. 'After the tests carried out today on our player Eduardo Camavinga by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a sprain in his right ankle. Pending evolution.' Image via Mahmud Hams/Diario AS How long is Camavinga expected to be out for? As per Marca, it is only a minor injury for Camavinga, but he is still expected to be out for at least 10 days. And given that Real Madrid face Osasuna next Tuesday (19/08), it would come too soon for him to be involved. Real Madrid are already without Jude Bellingham for the next 2-3 months after he underwent surgery on a long-standing shoulder injury earlier in the summer. It's definitely not ideal for Alonso to be without another midfielder for his first match at the Bernabeu, but it looks like he will have to do without Camavinga against Osasuna.
