Sweden stunned by new deadly gun attack
Gunfire erupted in the centre of Uppsala a day before a spring festival which draws more than 100,000 people to the city some 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of Stockholm.
Police, who confirmed three dead, said the attack was staged by a masked gunman. Media reports said at least one suspect escaped on an electric scooter after the early evening shootout.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer called the killings "extremely serious" but police would not say if it was the latest episode in a long running gang war. Sweden is also recovering from its worst mass shooting in February.
"We have three people confirmed dead, but we have not confirmed their identities," police spokesman Magnus Jansson Klarin told AFP.
"We received reports of a masked person on an electric scooter, we are looking into those reports," he said, adding that door-to-door inquiries were being carried out around the scene of the shooting.
Swedish media said witnesses heard several shots at a hair salon in the centre of the city.
The SVT public broadcaster said one of the dead had been a suspect in an investigation into a planned attack against a relative of a gang leader, Ismail Abdo.
"It's normally a quiet neighbourhood, I do my shopping here every day," Elias Sundgren, a student at the local university, told AFP.

Uppsala's mayor Erik Pelling told AFP he was "shocked and dismayed" by events.
"I am also angry that it could happen," he added.
"We are forced to live with these crimes. I am frustrated that we have not been able to tackle this problem more effectively," Pelling said.
The shooting came a day before Uppsala holds the Valborg festival to mark the start of spring. While police sealed off the streets around the hair salon -- and a drone flew overhead -- they sought to reassure the huge number of visitors expected.
"People should not be afraid to come tomorrow," Klarin said.
"There are 100,000 to 150,000 people expected in Uppsala for Valborg tomorrow, and there are already a whole lot here today."
On February 4, the country was rocked by its worst mass shooting when 35-year-old Rickard Andersson entered the Campus Risbergska adult education centre in the city of Orebro and shot dead 10 people before turning the gun on himself.
Sweden has struggled for years to rein in shootings and bombings between rival gangs. Earlier this month, two people were killed in a suspected gang fight in Gothenburg. A renowned rapper was shot dead in a gang battle in Gothenburg last year.
Perpetrators are often young teens who are hired as contract killers because they are under 15, the age of criminal responsibility in Sweden. The number of reported gang deaths fell in 2024 however.
In the country of 10.6 million people, 92 cases of deadly violence were recorded in 2024, 29 fewer than 2023, and the lowest level since 2014, according to official data.
There were 296 reported shooting cases in 2024, a 20 percent decrease from the year before, according to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention (Bra).
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson's centre-right minority government, which is backed in parliament by the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, came to power in 2022 with a vow to get tough on crime.

A 77-year old German man has been charged after a shock find at Perth Airport
A 77-year old man has been arrested after authorities made a shock discovery inside his luggage at a major airport. Australian Border Force (ABF) officers stopped the German national when he arrived at Perth carrying a small suitcase and backpack containing two mini briefcases. The officers checked his bags and allegedly found inserts inside the briefcases each filled with 2kg of cocaine on August 8. Australian Federal Police (AFP) officers arrested the man and seized 4kg of the illicit substance they allegedly found inside his bags. He was charged with importing a commercial quantity of cocaine and is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday. AFP superintendent Peter Hatch estimated the seizure had a street value of $1.3m. 'Despite all the warnings, ABF and AFP are continuing to identify people who attempt to traffic illicit drugs through our airports,' he said. 'AFP's work with ABF and other law enforcement agencies is critical to protecting Australian communities and stopping drug traffickers from profiting at their expense.' ABF superintendent John Eldridge said criminal syndicates tried all potential avenues to try and sneak contraband into Australia. 'Criminal syndicates prey on vulnerabilities to help carry out their illicit business models; it is our job as Australia's border agency to identify and disrupt this criminal activity,' he said. 'Through intelligence-led targeting and information sharing, ABF and AFP officers work closely to stop any amount of prohibited drug which may be smuggled through our airport network.'

Mum's justice plea for baby burned in Brisbane park coffee attack as suspect is found in China
By the age of two, Luka has endured more than most adults face in a lifetime after an attack that shocked a nation, his mother says. Luka suffered horrific burns when a stranger poured scalding coffee on his head at a Brisbane park picnic before fleeing in August 2024. Eight surgeries and almost 12 months later, Luka was healing 'with a spirit that amazes us every single day', his mother said. But the mum said her son deserved more than praise as police work to resolve the almost year-old case after the alleged attacker fled to China. 'He deserves justice,' she said. 'Almost one year has passed and, while our family continues to live with the trauma of that day, the person responsible has not been held accountable. 'To those in positions of power; please don't make it another year. Do not let this man escape accountability for hurting a child.' An international manhunt was launched after a stranger approached a group of people having a picnic at Stones Corner and emptied a thermos on Luka before running away on August 27, 2024. An arrest warrant was issued for a 33-year-old foreign national. But minutes after identifying the man, police discovered he had flown out of Australia 12 hours earlier. Police on Wednesday said they had not given up on 'securing justice' after the alleged offender was located in China. 'Over the past year, we've remained relentless in our efforts to hold this person to account and have him face justice,' Detective Acting Superintendent Paul Dalton said. 'There is not a day that goes past when we don't turn our mind to this investigation and we can advance it to find justice for this baby.' Australian Federal Police have been working with Chinese authorities since the alleged attacker left the country on August 31, 2024. There is no extradition treaty between Australia and China. 'The AFP values the ongoing co-operation from Chinese authorities and their shared commitment to pursue all avenues for justice in light of the alleged offender's location,' Queensland Police said. 'China has extraterritorial jurisdiction to prosecute its citizens for conduct which occurs outside China. 'Every procedure is a painful reminder of what was done to him — and of the justice that still hasn't come.' Besides multiple surgeries, Luka has undergone skin needling and grafts as well as laser treatments on his burns. 'Our son has shown a strength far beyond his years ... he is healing with a spirit that amazes us every single day,' the mother said. 'But no child should have to carry the scars — physical or emotional — of such a senseless act. 'He deserves more than our praise. He deserves justice.'
