England stars taken off pitch due to LIGHTNING strikes as match delayed by an hour

England completed their tour of the Americas by beating the USA 40-5 in Washington DC, but Steve Borthwick's players had to contend with a 40-minute delay during the first half
England's rugby union stars were forced off the pitch during their clash with the USA because of lightning strikes. Steve Borthwick's side, missing key players amid the ongoing British & Irish Lions series, were continuing their tour of the Americas after two impressive wins over Argentina.

Saturday marked England's first match in the USA since 2001. The fixture took place at Audi Field in Washington DC and kick-off had already been pushed back due to adverse weather conditions.

Then in the first half, with England 14-0 up, lightning caused another delay lasting 40 minutes. England Rugby posted on social media: "Due to lightning strikes in the vicinity of Audi Field in Washington DC, players have been removed from the field of play."

Lengthy delays were recently seen at football's Club World Cup in the USA. Chelsea and Benfica were forced to wait inside the changing rooms for nearly two hours during their match which was the sixth to be delayed due to weather conditions at the tournament.
England eventually cruised to a 40-5 win, with captain George Ford making four conversions. Ford, 32, admitted that the conditions were challenging but was proud of his team-mates' efforts.
"The conditions were difficult but it was a good group effort and a huge experience for the new players," the England skipper commented.

Boss Borthwick handed debuts to Gabriel Oghre, Max Ojomoh, Joe Carpenter, Arthur Clark, Charlie Atkinson and Oscar Beard. The 45-year-old was full of praise for the youngsters in the circumstances.
"They were challenging conditions, and with the weather break the game has lasted a long time," Borthwick said. "It's a scenario none of us have faced before - to deal with those conditions, with six new caps in the team today, was magnificent.
"There are things you want to do better, yes, but I thought they were brilliant. I'm pleased with the way the players have approached all the games - all three were very different, and it's been a great experience in so many ways.

"We've had 10 new caps over three Tests and got depth developing - we can all see the physical nature of the team, which is athletic, quick, fit and the way the England team's moving."

The ex-second row played last time England faced the USA across the pond. Sir Clive Woodward's team beat the hosts 48-19 in San Francisco - but Saturday was a very difference experience.
"My memories were we were getting changed in the swimming pool changing room, so a leisure complex!" Borthwick laughed. "Playing here in such a unique, brilliant stadium. It's very different, which is terrific to see."
England are on a run of seven successive victories, their longest winning streak since 2020 and a sign that confidence is growing after a difficult period last year. They'll take on Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Argentina at Twickenham when the autumn internationals come around.

Rishabh Pant ruled out for rest of England v India series after injury blow confirmed

Chelsea's real advantage in £80m Nicolas Jackson battle with Man Utd emerges

Nicolas Jackson is expected to leave Chelsea this summer and Roberto Di Matteo believes the Blues have all the power when it comes to deciding the striker's future Chelsea icon Roberto Di Matteo believes that the club are in a strong position regarding the potential sale of Nicolas Jackson. Jackson, 24, has caught the eye of several clubs this summer. ‌ Despite interest from Italian giants AC Milan and Napoli, reports suggest Jackson is keen on remaining in the Premier League. ‌ Manchester United have now emerged as the frontrunners to sign Jackson, with Chelsea looking to bank £80 million for the striker. It's understood that discussions have already taken place between the player's agents and United's representatives over a move. ‌ Yet, with United desperate for attacking reinforcements, former Chelsea manager Di Matteo is certain that his old side can stand firm and demand a significant sum for the Senegalese forward, given there's no pressing need at Stamford Bridge to sell players. Speaking to BetVictor, who offer the latest online casino games, Di Matteo said: "Chelsea are in a great position that they are not forced to sell. "They have a number of players that are on the market and they can raise some funds from there, so they are in no hurry to sell. They are in a good financial position, so it really depends on what clubs are prepared to pay.' Jackson's future at Stamford Bridge has been cast into doubt following Chelsea's £85m double swoop for Brighton's Joao Pedro and Ipswich's Liam Delap. Both new arrivals made their mark during Chelsea's triumphant Club World Cup run, prompting Jackson to weigh up his alternatives. United have secured Matheus Cunha for £62.5m from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo for £71m from Brentford. However, after being knocked back in their pursuit of Arsenal-bound Viktor Gyokeres and Liverpool's new acquisition Hugo Ekitike, Ruben Amorim remains determined to land a centre-forward before the new campaign kicks off. ‌ Regardless of whether United make their move, Di Matteo reckons Jackson will be spoilt for choice should he depart west London this summer, reports Football London. "Nicolas Jackson will have a few clubs looking at him," Di Matteo added. "He's a very good striker. He scores goals and he's got some experience now in England as well. I think he would have some clubs chasing him and he might want to go somewhere where he's maybe more wanted than at Chelsea. ‌ "I could see him joining Manchester United, and there are other clubs that are looking for him. Aston Villa could be one if they lose Morgan Rogers." Since arriving from Villarreal in June 2023, Jackson has netted 31 times for the Blues. With his contract running until 2033, Chelsea are under no pressure to offload the striker, and Di Matteo can even envisage a scenario where Jackson remains in west London to battle for his spot. "There are a number of clubs, but he might go back to Spain as well, who knows. Should Nicolas Jackson stay and fight for his place at Chelsea? It depends on his own ideas and his motivation," Di Matteo said. "When your manager wants to sign two new strikers, it doesn't bode very well for yourself. Having said that, if he sticks around, I like him, I like him very much I have to say. I like him as a player - but he might decide to go and find fortune somewhere else."

Man Utd transfer target banished to youth team as Ruben Amorim discovers asking price

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim wants to sign a striker before the end of the summer transfer window and Paris Saint-Germain's Randal Kolo Muani is a target Manchester United target Randal Kolo Muani has been sent to train with Paris Saint-Germain's youth team as Luis Enrique attempts to offload the player. Kolo Muani, 26, was loaned out to Juventus for the second half of last season, making a good impression by scoring 10 goals in 22 appearances. ‌ The French striker has indicated his desire to join Juve on a permanent basis, although the Italian giants have seen several offers rejected by PSG since the start of the summer transfer window. That could open the door for United, who Mirror Football understands retain an interest amid Ruben Amorim's search for a new striker which has become his pre-season priority. ‌ Kolo Muani was allowed to remain with Juventus for the Club World Cup but has now returned to Paris, where he's been given the cold shoulder. French newspaper Le Parisien report that Enrique has ordered the former Eintracht Frankfurt star to train with PSG's under-21 squad alongside fellow unwanted players Milan Skriniar, Marco Asensio, Carlos Soler, Nordi Mukiele and Renato Sanches. ‌ Having paid Frankfurt £76.4million to sign Kolo Muani two years ago and with a contract until 2028, PSG won't let him go on the cheap. It's explained that the Champions League winners will demand a total fee of £52m while Juventus would prefer another loan deal. United aren't the only Premier League club interested, too. The report adds that Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham all have Kolo Muani on the radar, although none of them have submitted bids. That's unlike Juve, who want the 26-year-old back. During the Club World Cup, Kolo Muani made it clear that his preference is to stay with the Serie A side, having been quizzed on links with Chelsea. "I don't know anything about Chelsea," the France international stated. "I'm trying to focus on the Club World Cup, which is a very fast competition. Should Manchester United sign Randal Kolo Muani for £52million? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ "Once the tournament is over, we'll see what happens on the market. If it were up to me, I'd stay here: I'm really happy at Juve, I feel great." United's shortlist also includes Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, who's fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap for £60m and £30m respectively. Amorim's side were in talks to sign Delap from Ipswich before Chelsea stole a march.
