England stars taken off pitch due to LIGHTNING strikes as match delayed by an hour
England's rugby union stars were forced off the pitch during their clash with the USA because of lightning strikes. Steve Borthwick's side, missing key players amid the ongoing British & Irish Lions series, were continuing their tour of the Americas after two impressive wins over Argentina.
Saturday marked England's first match in the USA since 2001. The fixture took place at Audi Field in Washington DC and kick-off had already been pushed back due to adverse weather conditions.
Then in the first half, with England 14-0 up, lightning caused another delay lasting 40 minutes. England Rugby posted on social media: "Due to lightning strikes in the vicinity of Audi Field in Washington DC, players have been removed from the field of play."
Lengthy delays were recently seen at football's Club World Cup in the USA. Chelsea and Benfica were forced to wait inside the changing rooms for nearly two hours during their match which was the sixth to be delayed due to weather conditions at the tournament.
England eventually cruised to a 40-5 win, with captain George Ford making four conversions. Ford, 32, admitted that the conditions were challenging but was proud of his team-mates' efforts.
"The conditions were difficult but it was a good group effort and a huge experience for the new players," the England skipper commented.
Boss Borthwick handed debuts to Gabriel Oghre, Max Ojomoh, Joe Carpenter, Arthur Clark, Charlie Atkinson and Oscar Beard. The 45-year-old was full of praise for the youngsters in the circumstances.
"They were challenging conditions, and with the weather break the game has lasted a long time," Borthwick said. "It's a scenario none of us have faced before - to deal with those conditions, with six new caps in the team today, was magnificent.
"There are things you want to do better, yes, but I thought they were brilliant. I'm pleased with the way the players have approached all the games - all three were very different, and it's been a great experience in so many ways.
Will the weather conditions negatively affect the 2026 FIFA World Cup? Have your say in the comments section.
"We've had 10 new caps over three Tests and got depth developing - we can all see the physical nature of the team, which is athletic, quick, fit and the way the England team's moving."
The ex-second row played last time England faced the USA across the pond. Sir Clive Woodward's team beat the hosts 48-19 in San Francisco - but Saturday was a very difference experience.
"My memories were we were getting changed in the swimming pool changing room, so a leisure complex!" Borthwick laughed. "Playing here in such a unique, brilliant stadium. It's very different, which is terrific to see."
England are on a run of seven successive victories, their longest winning streak since 2020 and a sign that confidence is growing after a difficult period last year. They'll take on Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Argentina at Twickenham when the autumn internationals come around.

Alexander Isak future: PIF intervene as Newcastle chairman takes control
The decision on Alexander Isak's future will be made by chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and PIF as the club continue to insist the striker is not for sale. Telegraph Sport understands it will be up to PIF, Saudi Arabia's public investment fund, to decide what happens next in this complex saga, but so far there has been a defiant reaction to claims Isak would like to consider his options in light of interest from Liverpool. The Premier League champions made it known last week they would be willing to pay a British record £120m for the Sweden international. That would be well below Newcastle's valuation of the player which is in excess of £150m. Liverpool have not yet made a formal bid for the player although that could change in the coming days as they look to test Newcastle's resolve to keep the 27-year-old. Newcastle have explored a possible deal to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, who has been a long-term target, in the last few days but it is not known whether this would be as a replacement for Isak or to play alongside him next season. Al-Rumayyan's direct involvement is unusual at Newcastle, with the chairman normally taking a backseat in the day-to-day running of the club. But given the significance of the decision on Isak, who still has three years left on his contract and has been told he is not for sale this summer, PIF want to take the lead rather than leave it up to the manager. Eddie Howe and his players landed in Singapore in the early hours of Friday morning for their pre-season tour, having been completely blind-sided by reports Isak wanted to explore his options. The player had informed team-mates and coaching staff that he was injured at the start of the week and there appeared to be bemusement from fellow players that a bombshell had been dropped while they were travelling to the Far East. 'I'm really close to him. He's a good guy. He's been through some rough things at this moment,' club captain Bruno Guimaraes said. 'My focus is with the lads. Isak is something I cannot control. The club has control of it. 'I hope he's going to be fit when we come back to Newcastle to prepare for the new season. 'They told us he was there in Newcastle because of his injury. Of course he's a top player for us and he's going to be a miss on this trip. 'We need him ready as soon as possible.' Dan Burn said added: 'Listen, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. But I think we can just control what we can control. 'That's a question for Alex to answer. He's obviously a big player for us, but we do have a lot of quality in the squad as well. 'Bringing Anthony [Elanga] in as well, which I think was a great signing.'

The reigning champion is into the last 16 after a big win on Thursday, but British icon Jayson Shaw has now CRASHED OUT of the tournament, losing 11-9 to Jefrey Roda. This year, there is a record-breaking prize pot of $1million (£850,000) with a staggering $250,000 awaiting the champion. Follow ALL of the latest updates below... 21st Jul 2025, 16:01 By Nyle Smith Welcome to the World Pool Championship 2025 The world's best cueists will once again battle it out for the crown jewel of the Nineball Tour as the World Pool Championship returns for 2025! Fedor Gorst held off a sensational Eklent Kaci fightback to win last year's incredible final 15-14. The Ghost seemed as if he was set to run away with the win after securing an early 3-0 lead, but a combo of misplaced shots and mistakes saw the match go into the final rack with a 13-13 score. However, an accidental scratch dashed Kaci's hopes of becoming world champion, which led to Gorst methodically clearing the table to earn his second title. It also meant that Gorst etched his name in history as the youngest ever to win multiple World Pool Championship titles. A win this year would put him level with Earl Strickland on three titles for the most ever. But the Russian-born American resident will have to compete with a field looking better than ever. Gorst's biggest rivals, such as 2024 finalist Eklent Kaci, Spanish sensation Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, Singaporean star Aloysius Yapp, American idol Shane van Boening and Scottish superstar Jayson Shaw, will all be among the 128 players in action.
