Ancestral Kerry home of Daniel O'Connell to feature on new TV series
Legacy is a new four part documentary series for RTÉ featuring 15 of Ireland's National Historic Properties with each episode having a specific theme: Centres of Power, Writers and Collectors, Memory and Commemoration, and The Art of the Portrait.
The first episode features four properties, each one a centre of power, and this includes Derrynane house - ancestral home of lawyer, politician and statesman, Daniel O'Connell, known worldwide as The Great Liberator, and whom some called the unofficial King of Ireland.
Daniel O'Connell worked on his campaigns for Catholic Emancipation and for Irish freedom from British rule at Derrynane and held court there like an old Gaelic Chieftain.
His greatest triumph was achieving Catholic Emancipation in 1829, giving Catholics the right to sit in Parliament.
After O'Connell's death, the house remained the O'Connell family home until, in 1948, the Derrynane Trust was founded, preserving the house as a museum and memorial to Daniel O'Connell.
In 1964, the house was transferred to the Commissioners of Public Works, and following restoration work completed in 1967, the house was officially opened by President Eamon De Valera.
This year will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Daniel O'Connell so it is fitting tribute to the man and his seat of power in Kerry to be part of the series.
Writer and director of Legacy David Hare, who wrote and directed Great Lighthouses of Ireland, explains the background to the documentary.
'The traditional way to approach this subject would be chronologically or geographically, but instead we've done so thematically. The thematic approach enabled us to include very different and seemingly unrelated buildings and sites from very different eras, and weave them together so that the connections between them become clear.'
The first episode also features Dublin Castle, Oldbridge House, located beside the River Boyne, and Pearse Museum in St Enda's Park in Rathfarnham. From their power bases in Derrynane and Rathfarnham, using very different methods and separated by almost a century, Daniel O'Connell and Patrick Pearse fought back against British rule.
Legacy will air on RTE one on Sunday May 11 at 6.30pm.

Conor McGregor and Liam Cunningham clash in fiery online spat
UFC star Conor McGregor has clashed with Irish actor Liam Cunningham in an online spat over the Gaza-bound aid boat Madleen. The Israel Defence Forces boarded and seized the vessel carrying 12 people, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, which was attempting to enter Gaza and break a naval blockade overnight. The vessel set sail from Sicily last Sunday with the hopes of bringing much needed civilian aid to the region. UFC star Conor McGreggor has clashed with Irish actor Liam Cunningham in an online spat over the Gaza-bound aid boat Madleen. Pic: Tucker Carlson via YouTube The British-flagged boat was packed to the brim with aid supplies, with many members of the expedition documenting their journey via social media in a bid to further bring awareness to the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Game of Thrones actor Liam Cunningham was also involved in the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, revealing that those aboard were transporting items that Israel were not allowing inside Gaza such as crutches and baby formula. The Irish star has shared several tweets in the wake of Israel seizing the aid boat, with one stating: 'The Freedom flotilla was attacked during the night. The ship was rammed, boarded, and the 12 volunteers kidnapped.' The Israel Defence Forces boarded and seized the vessel carrying 12 people, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, which was attempting to enter Gaza and break a naval blockade overnight. Pic: Todd Williamson/JanuaryImages/REX/Shutterstock He described it as 'more reprehensible behaviour from the genocidal regime in Tel Aviv.' Conor McGregor quickly responded to the actor's tweet on X, saying: 'I thought you were on this boat Liamo, what happened?' 'You forgot your goggles? You get seasick off the gargle? Bottler,' McGregor added, Didn't know you could read and write Conor. Thought you used your hands to tap out. — liam cunningham (@liamcunningham1) June 9, 2025 This quickly ignited a feud between the pair, with Cunningham responding: 'Didn't know you could read and write, Conor. Thought you used your hands to tap out.' The Irish fighter then uploaded a picture depicting Greta Thunberg, which was originally posted by the Israeli Foreign Ministry. In a separate tweet, McGregor said: 'Tell us you're plotting an Irish goodbye without telling us.' The vessel set sail from Sicily last Sunday with the hopes of bringing much needed civilian aid to the region. Pic:'Two bags full packed and ready to skid! Ah Liamo you little bottler!' he added, including a picture of Cunningham during the Madleen launch in Sicily with activists Thiago Ávila and Yasemin Acar. He later added: 'For the record, Liam Cunningham is a virtue signaling bottler. He was right there and did not go. That is absolutely embarrassing.' Speaking last week at the launch of a new People Before Profit pamphlet 'No To War – Defend Irish Neutrality', the actor explained that it was never planned that he would be on the Madleen boat as it is a small vessel. The Israel Foreign Ministry confirmed they had apprehended the yacht overnight, with the passengers 'expected to return to their home countries.' A message shared via X from the Ministry said: 'The 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is making its way to the shores of Israel. The passengers are expected to return to their home countries. 'While Greta and others attempted to stage a media provocation whose sole purpose was to gain publicity — and which included less than a single truckload of aid — more than 1,200 aid trucks have entered Gaza from Israel within the past two weeks, and in addition, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has distributed close to 11 million meals directly to civilians in Gaza.' The department added that the 'tiny amount of aid' on the yacht would be transferred to Gaza 'through real humanitarian channels.'

Behind the music - Aoife Destruction and the Nilz
Aoife Destruction And The Nilz play the Main Stage at Forest Fest Emo, Co. Laois on Saturday 26 July. We asked Aoife the BIG questions . . . Aoife Destruction And The Nilz was born in August 2023 out of a late night conversation at an after party at Rebellion Punk Festival in Blackpool, England, where both Aoife and The Nilz were performing. Aoife had previously contributed to The Nilz's debut album Unicorn Hardsports in 2021 on the track So and had jumped up on stage with the band a couple of times to perform it live. After 12 months of touring and support slots with Stiff Little Fingers, Bad Manners, Kerbdog, Big Country, The Rezillos, and gigs at Forest Festival, Electric Picnic and Rebellion Festival in Blackpool, Aoife and the boys are gearing up to release their first full length debut album with lots of live shows and festivals already in the diary for 2025. Forest Fest Emo's founder is Phillip Meagher, a local solicitor who loves music but felt that the festivals he was attending weren't geared towards his demographic anymore, so he decided to make his own. He started in 2022 with a mainly Irish line-up, and while the festival still hosts Irish acts like Pillow Queens, Mary Coughlan, Sharon Shannon, Something Happens, Paddy Casey, Thumper and more, it's now expanded to include international headliners like Manic Street Preachers, Franz Ferdinand, Travis, Orbital, Peter Hook & The Light, and Alabama 3. I joined my first band at the age of 14 called Subbacultcha, which was a Pixies cover band. I moved to Spain in 2021 yet still somehow manage to sing and perform in two bands based in Dublin. Aoife Destruction And The Nilz are currently recording our debut album which will be out later in the year. How would you describe your music? I would describe our music as aggressive comedic smut tones with catchy laments and choruses that will haunt your dreams. Who are your musical inspirations? My musical inspirations vary dramatically from punk rock to hip hop to cheesy 80s and everything in between What was the first gig you ever went to? The first gig I went to is when I was 11 years old being snuck into the corner of a pub to see my Dad's band The Barflys play. It was then that I knew that being in a band is what I wanted to do. What was the first record you ever bought? The first ever record I bought was Doolittle by Pixies so I could learn the songs for my cover band. What's your favourite song right now? Research Chemicals by The Viagra Boys. Favourite lyric of all time? My favourite lyric of all time is "You've got high heels because they help you get high" from the song Roxy Girl by The Radiators From Space. If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be? If I had only one song to listen to for the rest of my life, it would have to be Hyper-ballad by Björk. We all have that one nostalgic song that brings us back to a certain time and place. Facebook, Spotify, Bandcamp. Alan Cor
