Bengaluru Chemists' body seeks crackdown on fake medicines
The association said the proposed task force, involving officers from the Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration department (FDA), must be empowered to carry out state-wide raids, seizures, and arrests of those involved in the fake drug trade, which it described as 'a form of national public health terrorism.'
BDCDA acknowledged and appreciated the government's recent move to develop a software for the recall of Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) drugs — a first-of-its-kind initiative in India. However, it emphasised that this only addresses a limited part of the much bigger issue of counterfeit and spurious drugs in circulation, particularly in the post-Covid period, when their prevalence has reportedly surged by 50%.
Citing Parliamentary Standing Committee findings and recent trends, the association warned that counterfeit medicines were infiltrating the market due to lax enforcement, lenient laws, and growing consumer preference for discounted drugs. A key bottleneck, according to BDCDA, is the shortage of drug inspectors. Only eight out of 12 sanctioned posts in the state are filled, making surveillance against fake drugs extremely difficult. To address this, it reiterated the need for an IPS-led multi-agency team that could plug enforcement gaps and ensure strong punishment for offenders.

SC orders SIT probe into 'nexus' between Noida officials & land owners
The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered an SIT probe into alleged irregularities in payment of compensation to land owners by Noida Authority, which in several cases was 'exorbitant' highlighting the nexus between senior officials and land owners. A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi ordered a new special investigation team (SIT) of three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, replacing the earlier SIT, which highlighted the irregularities in the land acquisition compensation payouts. The apex court also directed that there will be no project development in Noida without prior Environmental Impact Assessment and approval by the court's green bench, which hears environmental cases. In January this year, the court had constituted an SIT of three senior IPS officers from the UP cadre to investigate the 'overall functioning' of Noida Authority. The SIT report found that in at least 20 cases, land compensation paid to certain beneficiaries exceeded legal entitlements. It also named errant Noida Authority officials and raised concerns about potential collusion, centralised power, and a lack of transparency in the administrative operations of the authority. The court is currently hearing the anticipatory bail plea of a law officer of Noida over charges of 'release of huge amount of compensation in favour of some land owners who, it was alleged, were not entitled to seek such a higher compensation for their acquired land.' The new SIT, formed by the court on Wednesday, is directed to register preliminary enquiries and, if they find credible evidence of wrongdoing, escalate to FIRs under appropriate legal provisions. The court said that this process must be overseen by a police officer of at least Commissioner rank, who will also file periodic status reports to the court. The court has also told the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary to place the findings before the Council of Ministers and appoint a Chief Vigilance Officer (from IPS cadre or deputed from the Comptroller and Auditor General) within four weeks. Additionally, a citizen advisory board is to be constituted within the same timeframe. The matter has been adjourned for eight weeks, during which the SIT's report must remain under strict judicial supervision.

79th I-Day celebrations at Manekshaw Parade Ground to feature 35 police contingents
The 79th Independence Day will be celebrated at the Field Marshal Manekshaw parade ground in the heart of the city on Friday, with 1,150 members of 35 police force contingents taking part in the ceremonial parade. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will hoist the flag at 9 a.m., receive the salute, and later address the crowd. The event will witness a performance by 650 children commemorating the women from Karnataka who took part in the freedom struggle, according to a press release by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). As many as 500 students of Seshadripuram Pre-University College will stage a performance depicting five guarantees of the Congress government, and 253 members of the Karnataka police will participate in a mass band. The 35 contingents taking part in the parade include the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the City Armed Reserve (CAR), the Goa police, the Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF), the traffic police, the women police, the Home Guards, the traffic wardens, the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services (KSFES), the canine squad, and a band squad. The Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner's office has started issuing free passes for the programme on the Seva Sindhu portal. As many as 3,000 passes will be issued, among which 100 have been issued already. Physical passes can also be collected at the Assistant Commissioner's and the Deputy Commissioner's offices. Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh announced that an elaborate bandobast plan has been chalked out for the programme, with 2,000 officers being deployed around the ground. The announcement was made after the final parade practice on Wednesday. In addition to 500 cameras in the vicinity of the ground, the police are installing an additional 100. A strict frisking procedure will be in place before the entry. Handheld metal detectors, door frame metal detectors, and baggage scanners will be deployed for additional security measures. The public are strictly allowed to enter through Gate 5 only and should occupy blocks seven, eight and nine. E-pass holders must carry valid ID proof, and the public must be seated inside by 8.30 a.m., and no latecomers will be entertained. Any sharp objects, matchboxes, knives, pamphlets, food and snacks, water bottles, video and still cameras, firecrackers, explosives, and weapons won't be allowed. No one can wear black clothing. Traffic restrictions To ensure smooth flow of traffic, the police have announced traffic diversions and parking restrictions around the Central Business District (CBD) from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Parking has been prohibited on Central Street from Anil Kumble Circle to Shivajinagar bus stand. Similarly, no parking on Cubbon Road from CTO Circle to K.R. Road and Cubbon Road junction. Parking is also prohibited on M.G. Road between Anil Kumble Circle and Queens Circle on both sides. The vehicles coming from Infantry Road towards Manipal Centre should move on Infantry Road, take a left turn at Safina Plaza, move to Kamaraj Road via Dispensary Road, take a right turn at Dickenson Road junction, and reach Manipal Centre junction via Cubbon Road. Vehicles coming from Manipal junction towards BRV Junction on Cubbon Road will be prohibited near Manipal Centre. Vehicles must take the right turn at the Webbs junction, move on MG Road, take a right turn at Anil Kumble Circle and reach BRV junction. The vehicles coming from Anil Kumble Circle towards Cubbon Road will go straight on Central Street Junction, take a right turn on Infantry Road, move to Safina Plaza, take a left turn and reach Kamaraj Road via Alies Circle, take a right at Dickenson Road junction to reach KR Road, make a left turn to Cubbon Road and reach Manipal Centre via Cubbon Road.

Balakrishna launches Amaravati campus works of Basavatarakam Cancer Hospital
Hindupur MLA and actor Nandamuri Balakrishna on Wednesday, August 13, launched the construction of the Amaravati campus of the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute at Thullur. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Balakrishna said the new facility would be built on 21 acres and envisioned as a Centre of Excellence for comprehensive cancer treatment, research, and patient-centric care. The hospital would combine advanced medical technology with a multidisciplinary approach, housed in a purpose-built modern infrastructure, he added. The project will be completed in two phases. In the first phase, a 500-bed facility offering oncology services will be set up, adopting an integrated care model covering prevention, early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation. This phase is being developed with an investment of ₹750 crore, and operations are expected to start by 2028. In the second phase, an additional 500 beds will be added along with specialised departments, research wings, and enhanced patient amenities, creating a regional referral centre for complex and advanced cancer cases. According to the hospital, the foundation stone for the cancer care facility was laid in 2019 after the TDP government allotted land. However, construction was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. With the TDP-led NDA government back in power in the State, all hurdles have now been cleared, and the government has allotted an additional six acres for the project. Mr. Balakrishna, who is also chairman of the cancer hospital, launched the works by performing traditional puja rituals. Ministers P. Narayana and Satya Kumar Yadav, Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath, Heritage Foods Executive Director Nara Brahmani, Trust Board member Nori Dattatreyudu, and others participated in the ceremony.
