Hard for police to progress child harm cases if witnesses fail to cooperate

Photo: RNZ / REECE BAKER A former police detective and child advocate say it is difficult for police to progress investigations where children have been harmed if people do not speak up. On Friday police called for information relating to a three-month-old baby from Masterton who is in a critical condition , from what they suspect were "non-accidental" injuries. "From the inquiries to date, we believe that the injuries the baby suffered weren't an accident, but we are still at the early stages of the investigation," Detective Inspector Haley Ryan said. "Someone knows what happened, and we're doing everything we can to get answers for a victim who has no way of speaking up for themselves." Just weeks before police appealed for information relating to a three-month-old baby girl from the Hutt Valley who suffered multiple fractures to her body. Meanwhile, in early July a homicide investigation was launched after a six-month-old baby who was found with critical injuries in Foxton died. Child Matters chief executive Jane Searle said people needed to be encouraged to speak up about what they knew as children could not speak up for themselves. "These are very complex cases and police teams work extremely hard in very difficult situations, and they're often quite emotionally charged inquiries," she said. "If those witnesses, whether they be family or other community members, aren't cooperative, it makes that police job extremely difficult." She said it also needed to be understood that speaking up could often be difficult for people and take courage. But she said it was vital in order to get justice for the children who were harmed. "Unless the adults involved or the adults who hold information actually cooperate and speak up, it becomes very difficult for these cases to progress." Investigation underway following fatal motorbike crash in South Auckland's Pukekohe

(File photo) Photo: RNZ / Richard Tindiller One person has died following a motorbike crash in Auckland's Pukekohe, and a police investigation has been launched. Counties Manukau District Commander, Superintendent Shanan Gray said police had been looking for a stolen motorbike in the area when officers saw the bike travelling along Helvetia Rd at 12.20pm on Friday. The officer did a U-turn and attempted to get the motorbike to stop, but Gray said before they had turned on their lights and sirens the motorbike sped off at speed. They then lost sight of the bike. A short time later another officer found the bike crashed on McShane St. The rider was found dead at the scene. A scene examination was underway and the road was closed, Gray said. "There is now an investigation underway, which will work to establish all the facts surrounding this tragic incident." The Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) would also be notified. "We are also working to support those affected and their families as well as our staff who were involved," Gray said. "As part of our investigation, we are seeking information from witnesses who may have been in the area at the time, or prior to this incident occurring." Photo: RNZ / Victor Waters The family of a 20-year-old who died following an alleged brawl in Hamilton earlier this month while celebrating his upcoming birthday, say the pain of losing their son is deep. Tyreece Te Pairi died on Alexandra St in Hamilton just after midnight on July 20 following a fight. His family released a statement through police where they asked for privacy to grieve. The statement said Te Pairi had been laid to rest in his tūrangawaewae, Tolaga Bay. "Though his body rests, our grief does not. The ache of his absence is something words cannot carry. "Tyreece was deeply loved, and the pain of losing him is just as deep. His future held so much promise - he was taken from us far too soon." His death had left a profound on his partner, whānau and all those who knew him, the statement said. To everyone who stood beside us, sent messages, brought kai, travelled to be with us, or held us in prayer - we are deeply grateful." They asked for their son's memory to be honoured with kindness and dignity. "Allow our whānau the space to grieve in peace, free from speculation and harm." The family said they were working with police and were grateful for their support. "If you have any information, no matter how minor it may seem, come forward without delay. Your cooperation is vital to bringing justice for Tyreece and ensuring those responsible are removed from our community." An 18-year-old man was before the courts in relation to Te Pairi's death.
