Jharkhand HC slaps Rs 20 lakh fine on BIT Mesra over death of student on campus
The court also formulated guidelines to be followed by educational institutes and schools across the state for dealing with medical emergencies faced by students.
The bench of Justice Sanjay Prasad observed that BIT-Mesra failed in its duty to protect a student under its care, and the institutional failure contributed to the loss of a life.
The court had on August 12 ordered that a list of government and private hospitals with ambulance facilities be maintained by all educational institutes in Jharkhand.
A medical dispensary or clinic should be operational in every school and college with one male and female doctor for every 500 to 1,000 students, equipped with medicine and life-saving drugs, the judge ordered.
The names of hospitals and doctors with their contact numbers should also be prominently displayed on notice boards in classrooms and in key locations in the institute, the order said.
The court also directed the installation of CCTV cameras inside and outside classrooms and hostel entrances.
Besides, a separate grievance cell and a student monitoring team should be constituted to liaison between students and the institute, it said.
The high court said that a portal or website for grievance redressal of students and parents should also be created by the institute.
Justice Prasad, after hearing the petitions of convicts Mausam Kumar Singh, Abhishek Kumar, Sahil Ansari and Irfan Ansari, rejected their pleas.
The court had earlier ordered the DGP and the state government to formulate a standard operating procedure to ensure safety of students in educational institutes. PTI CORR NAM RBT

Fatehpur Mausoleum Case: No Arrest Over Vandalism Yet; Locals Barred From Talking to Outsiders
New Delhi: While the police were yet to arrest anyone in connection with the vandalism of a mausoleum in Fatehpur's Abu Nagar locality, a one-kilometre radius has been cordoned off with barricades around the site to prevent any further communal flare-up. On Tuesday (August 13), police booked more than 150 people, 10 of them named, for damaging public property and disturbing the peace, according to news agency PTI. The 10 named in the FIR are Dharmendra Singh (Bajrang Dal), Abhishek Shukla (BJP), Ajay Singh (district panchayat member), Devnath Dhakad (BJP), Vinay Tiwari (municipal councillor), Pushpraj Patel, Rithik Pal (BJP), Prasoon Tiwari (BJP), Ashish Trivedi and Pappu Chauhan (Samajwadi Party). Meanwhile, locals have been barred from talking to outsiders and media entry has been banned. Police in plainclothes are roaming areas near the mausoleum, interacting with locals and monitoring the activities. On August 11, a violent confrontation erupted in Fatehpur, after a mob from various Hindutva bodies stormed a centuries-old mausoleum in Abu Nagar, hoisted saffron flags on it, performed Hindu rituals inside and vandalised graves in the presence of security forces. It was followed by stone-pelting and clashes with members of the Muslim community, triggering a political outcry and raising questions about law enforcement in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Uttar Pradesh. According to the PTI report, while the vandals are yet to be arrested, police have arrested the Congress city president, Arif alias Gudda, and his several supporters, for holding a protest demanding the arrest of the vandals. Meanwhile, the party's district president, Mahesh Dwivedi was placed under house arrest when a party delegation comprising two former MLAs planned to visit the site. Dwivedi called the police action 'dictatorial' and accused the administration of acting as a 'silent spectator' while the vandalism had happened. Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Uttam Patel said he had sent a letter to Union home minister Amit Shah, demanding an investigation by an independent agency into the matter.

Woman's ‘save me' text to boyfriend, then murder: Father held in ‘honour killing' in Gujarat
An 18-year-old woman from Banaskantha district in Gujarat allegedly sent a chilling 'save me' message to her live-in partner before being killed in what police suspect was an honour killing. The release said that more than 650 persons involved in street crime were arrested in the month of July 2025.(PTI File Photo/representational) The woman, who had been in a relationship her father and uncle disapproved of, was allegedly strangled at her uncle's house on June 24, with her last rites performed the next morning to conceal the crime, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying. She had moved to Palanpur town to prepare for the all-India medical entrance exam and reportedly entered a live-in relationship with a man during that time. According to the FIR cited by PTI, Haresh Chaudhary, who is already married and has a son, fell in love with the girl after giving her a lift from Tharad town to Palanpur. It remains unclear if he had disclosed his marital status to her. In May, the couple eloped to Ahmedabad, signing a formal agreement for a live-in relationship, and later travelled to Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. On June 12, a Tharad police team and a relative tracked them to a hotel in Rajasthan. The girl was handed to her uncle Shivrambhai, while Chaudhary was arrested in an old Kutch district case under the Prohibition Act. 'Save me' messages ignored as boyfriend was incarcerated After his release on June 21, Chaudhary discovered that the girl had messaged him twice on Instagram on June 17, expressing fear that her family might kill her or force her into marriage. 'He couldn't read her messages earlier since he was in jail,' Nala said. A lawyer filed a habeas corpus petition in the Gujarat high court seeking her production before the court. However, on June 25, two days before the hearing, Chaudhary learnt that she had died on the night of June 24 and her last rites had been performed the next morning. FIR filed after complaint from live-in partner Based on a complaint by her live-in partner, Haresh Chaudhary, the Tharad police booked the girl's father, Sendhabhai Patel, and uncle Shivrambhai Patel for murder on August 6, Nala said. The accused were reportedly against the relationship. After registering the FIR, police arrested Shivrambhai and later added Naran Patel, a cousin of the father and uncle, as a co-accused. 'We arrested Naran Patel on Tuesday. He is a cousin of Shivrambhai and Sendhabhai, who is still absconding,' Nala said. According to the FIR, her father and uncle decided to kill her fearing she might elope again with Chaudhary. 'When the girl was at Shivrambhai's house at Dantiya village in Tharad on the night of June 24, she was offered milk containing sleeping pills. When she fell unconscious, the duo strangled her and performed her last rites the next morning to hide their crime,' said Nala. Gujarat girl had cleared NEET According to the report, she had also cleared the highly competitive National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), police said on Wednesday. 'She had given NEET a few months back, but it is still unclear if she wanted to become a doctor or a nurse. As per the results announced recently, she has cleared the test with good marks,' said Danta division Assistant Superintendent of Police Suman Nala. (With PTI inputs)
