Stars goalie Oettinger surprised, embarrassed by pull in West final that DeBoer is still explaining
'No one's a bigger fan of Jake Oettinger than me, as a person or a goalie,' DeBoer said. 'There's one motive, and that's how do we survive this and get it to a Game 6. And I have to live with those consequences. If it works, great, we're in Edmonton tonight and you guys are telling me how awesome a move it was. And when it doesn't, I've got to stand up here and do this, and I understand."
Oettinger was pulled only 7:09 into Game 5 at home Thursday night after Mattias Janmark's goal put Edmonton up 2-0. The Oilers scored again less than a minute after Casey DeSmith took over on the way to a 6-3 win that set up a Stanley Cup Final rematch against Florida, though Dallas got within 4-3 a minute into the third period.
'The reality is if I make one or two of those saves, then I'm still playing in the game,' Oettinger said in his first public comments since. 'The way I'm looking at it is, how can I get better from that? How can I can make those saves that I made all playoffs?"
The 26-year-old goalie has been to the playoffs in four consecutive seasons and won six postseason series. That stretch began in 2022, when Dallas took top-seeded Calgary to a Game 7, and Oettinger had 64 saves before Johnny Gaudreau's OT goal ended the first-round series.
Oettinger had a .905 save percentage and 2.82 goals-against average while facing 503 shots in 18 games this postseason, by far the most of any goalie. Florida's Sergei Bobrovsky, in one fewer game, has faced 408 shots and the next-highest total is 292. Oettinger had a .909 save percentage and 2.59 GAA in 58 regular-season games.
When DeBoer was asked Saturday about his conversations with Oettinger since the season ended, the coach said they hadn't had the opportunity yet to have one.
Oettinger was later asked if he had any concerns about their relationship, and he responded by saying the whole experience is something he would learn from and that was going to help him grow to be a better person and goalie.
'My job is to stop the puck. And I feel like I'm one of the best in the world when I'm playing well doing that. So that's all I'm in a focus on,' Oettinger said. 'All the extra stuff is just extra stuff to me. ... If I go out there next year and I'm the best goalie in the world, it doesn't matter. One of you guys could be coaching, it doesn't matter. Just try to be the best I can be, learn from the experience.'
It was the third season in a row the Stars lost in the West final, and Edmonton also knocked them out last year. The Oilers finished the 2024 series with three wins in a row, and this time won the last four after Dallas won the opener.
DeBoer said there had been discussions among the coaching staff before Game 4 at Edmonton about whether Oettinger maybe needed a break, and that the goalie had dealt with some upper respiratory issues during the series. While that didn't happen then, it was at least part of the quick in-game switch on Thursday, along with the recent playoff record against the Oilers.
'When you're in that moment, you're making that decision, what's going through my mind is, you know, we need to stop the bleeding here. Our team looked tentative. We're down 2-0,' DeBoer said. 'In the back of your mind, you know, is he a little bit fatigued, he's been through a lot. He's carried us through two rounds, is he going to be a better goalie in Game 6 and 7 for us fresh.'
Oettinger said he felt great physically — 'as healthy as I've ever felt' — and felt like he could have played 40 more games. But he did acknowledge the potential mental grind of another long season.

Jerry Jones throws shade at Buffalo Bills' Super Bowl drought
The Dallas Cowboys haven't won a Super Bowl since its 30th iteration in 1995. But team owner and general manager Jerry Jones just wants to remind everyone that the Buffalo Bills' title drought runs much longer. The recently released Netflix docuseries about Jones' ownership of the Cowboys has an episode dedicated to Dallas' 29-year span without another Super Bowl championship. Throughout the drought, Jones has remained in control as the head of the front office in addition to his ownership duties. In an exclusive interview with USA TODAY Sports' Jarrett Bell, Jones flipped the script on his critics by throwing the Bills under the bus. JARRETT BELL: 'I bust my (expletive)': Jerry Jones defends Cowboys' marketing over winning 85518977007 "How long has it been since Buffalo won the Super Bowl?" Jones said. "Buffalo hasn't been chopped liver. They're solid. They're probably in the top third of the NFL." The Bills have won the AFC championship four times since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. All four of the titles were in consecutive years between 1990 and 1993. All four times, they lost the ensuing Super Bowl, including twice in a row against Jones' Cowboys in Super Bowls 27 and 28 (following the 1992 and '93 seasons, respectively). Jones said he remains confident that his approach as Dallas' head of personnel decisions will eventually lead to a championship. "I just can't get as convicted that the way we're doing it, that our approach to trying to win a Super Bowl, that that needs to change," Jones said. "I guess that's why I'm so defensive." The Cowboys won 12 games in each of the 2022 and 2023 seasons before losing in the divisional round in 2022 and wild-card round in 2023. In 2024, Dallas finished with a 7-10 record as it dealt with injuries to some of its star players, including a season-ending hamstring injury to quarterback Dak Prescott. The Bills have won five straight AFC East titles, dating back to 2020, and haven't won fewer than 11 games in a season over that stretch. However, Buffalo also hasn't returned to a Super Bowl since that last AFC title in 1993. Four times in the last five years, they've fallen to the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs, including twice in the AFC title game. Dallas Wings sign promising player as injuries mount
The Dallas Wings have signed forward Amy Okonkwo to a seven-day hardship contract, the team announced on Thursday. Okonkwo, a 6'2 forward, is a two-time FIBA AfroBasket MVP and a longtime Nigerian women's basketball team star, joins a shorthanded Wings team that has already been eliminated from playoff contention. The signing comes just two days after the Wings announced center Li Yueru was out for the season with an ACL sprain, and that guard Arike Ogunbowale was out indefinitely with right knee tendonitis. In Wednesday's loss to the Los Angeles Sparks, rookie JJ Quinerly left the game in the fourth quarter after suffering a left leg injury. Okonkwo is an elite outside shooter and versatile forward. She played at the University of Southern California (USC) for one season, and then at Texas Christian University (TCU) for three seasons, where she earned Big 12 Sixth Player of the Year honors. Okonkwo is also a two-time Olympian, playing with the Nigerian women's national team in the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Olympics. This past winter, she played with the Bourges professional basketball team in France, averaging 14.2 points and 5.2 rebounds, and shooting 48 percent from beyond the arc. She then signed a training camp contract with the Connecticut Sun and appeared in two preseason games, averaging 7 points and 4 rebounds. If Quinerly is out, the Wings are down to 8 active players: guards Paige Bueckers, Grace Berger, Aziah James, and Haley Jones; center Luisa Geiselsoder; and forwards Myisha Hines-Allen, Diamond Miller, and Maddy Siegrist. t 28 years old, Okonkwo will have her first regular-season on-court opportunity in the WNBA. Okonkwo will be available for Friday's game against the Seattle Storm.

Fantasy Football Mock Draft, No. 11 Pick: Full list of picks, analysis and key takeaways
We're winding down on my 12-part fantasy football mock draft series, where I'm drafting from every spot — 1 through 12 — in a standard 12-team Yahoo league to break down how draft strategies evolve based on pick position. As always, I used the Yahoo Fantasy Plus Instant Mock Draft tool and drafted solo. The format is half-PPR, with the following roster construction: QB, 2 RBs, 2 WRs, TE, FLEX, K, D/ST and six bench spots. We're onto 1.11, let's run it! [Subscribe to Yahoo Fantasy Plus and unlock Instant Mock Drafts today] Full Roster QB: Dak Prescott (DAL) WR: Amon‑Ra St. Brown (DET) WR: Nico Collins (HOU) RB: Omarion Hampton (LAC) RB: Kenneth Walker III (SEA) FLEX: D'Andre Swift (CHI) TE: Tyler Warren (IND) D/ST: Vikings (MIN) K: Harrison Butker (KC) Bench: George Pickens (DAL) Bench: Zach Charbonnet (SEA) Bench: Ricky Pearsall (SF) Bench: Trey Benson (ARI) Bench: Marvin Mims Jr. (DEN) Bench: Jared Goff (DET) Rounds 1–3: WRs leading the way 1.11 – Amon‑Ra St. Brown (DET – WR)2.02 – Nico Collins (HOU – WR)3.11 – Omarion Hampton (LAC – RB) Roster Assessment after Round 3 I opened with a couple of investments at WR — St. Brown stands out with three straight seasons over 140 targets, despite questions around emerging teammates. Collins has been top-3 in yards per route run (YPRR) over the past two seasons, one of the best indicators for fantasy production at the WR position. Now he has to stay healthy. In Round 3, I grabbed rookie RB Omarion Hampton, who offers a ton of potential with Najee Harris sidelined and other backups underwhelming through the preseason. [Upgrade to Fantasy Plus and gain your edge from draft day to the playoffs] Rounds 4–6: Adding RB depth with flex appeal 4.02 – Kenneth Walker III (SEA – RB)5.11 – D'Andre Swift (CHI – RB)6.02 – George Pickens (DAL – WR) Roster assessment after Round 6 I continued loading up on RBs with Walker's explosiveness and Swift's dual-threat skillset. Walker, who dealt with a foot injury in the preseason, is back practicing in full, removing some reluctance around selecting him in the fourth round. With Swift, I'm buying into the Bears' improved offensive line. Having familiarity with his HC Ben Johnson from their days in Detroit doesn't hurt either. With the starting backfield set, turning to WR in the sixth round was necessary. It's my first time selecting the current contested catch king, George Pickens. If he continues making these eye-popping catches, even as a WR2, he'll be in for a big year with Dak Prescott under center. Structurally, this layer of picks strengthens running back consistency while protecting from WR downturn. Rounds 7–10: Youth, Upside & QB Anchor 7.11 – Zach Charbonnet (SEA – RB)8.02 – Ricky Pearsall (SF – WR)9.11 – Tyler Warren (IND – TE)10.02 – Dak Prescott (DAL – QB) Roster assessment after Round 10 Picking up Walker's trusted backup (Charbonnet) a round early was rooted in locking up the Seattle backfield. In the eight games Charbonnet played with Walker sidelined, he averaged 94.95 scrimmage yards per game and scored seven TDs. The Niners' offense runs through CMC and George Kittle. However, Pearsall enters his second season poised to see more opportunities with Brandon Aiyuk on the PUP list through at least Week 6 and Jauan Jennings' unresolved contract situation and calf injury. The ninth round is right around Warren's current ADP and I wouldn't be surprised if it starts to climb with draft season officially kicking off this weekend. Prescott anchors the QB spot with a Pickens stack. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Rounds 11–15: Develop and round it out 11.11 – Trey Benson (ARI – RB)12.02 – Marvin Mims Jr. (DEN – WR)13.11 – Jared Goff (DET – QB)14.02 – Vikings (MIN – D/ST)15.11 – Harrison Butker (KC – K) Roster assessment after Round 15 I closed the draft with some swings. James Conner has been a reliable back who also turned 30 earlier this year. Mims was efficient last year, cashing in six TDs despite only seeing 52 targets. He's a hit-or-miss flier who I'd have no issue cutting if it doesn't work out. I took Goff as my backup because Dak got hurt in two of his last three seasons. Goff is hardly a needle-mover, but he can get the job done with a St. Brown stack. The Vikings D/ST was a top-3 defense last season and opens up Week 1 as a consensus top-5 unit. I got Butker as my kicker because the options were dwindling. Playing for the Chiefs should be a plus. Positional runs and key takeaways RB: Unsurprisingly, the demand was high early on, with 12 RBs drafted through the first two rounds. The RB demand remained steady through the mid-rounds. WR: The wideouts peaked in Rounds 4 and 8, with 15 total WRs getting selected across those two rounds. I faded WR in Round 4 and started the run in Round 8. TE: Targeted sparsely but consistently, often in response to team needs or positional runs. Overall, I mocked a balanced, relatively young roster that has a mix of highly-targeted wideouts, a high-floor QB and a stable of promising RBs behind ascending offensive lines. By adding Goff and Charbonnet, I insulated some of the injury concerns with drafting Walker and Prescott. Lastly, choosing to stack Prescott with Pickens and Goff with St. Brown should give me a decent floor for weekly production.
