Skudai kopitiam owner claims trial to charge of offering RM2,000 bribe
Tan Kai Dee, 23, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Sessions Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail here on Monday (July 29).
According to the charge sheet, Tan was accused of giving RM2,000 in cash to an assistant enforcement officer with the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP), who is considered a public servant under the law.
The alleged bribe was an inducement for the officer not to take enforcement action against Tan's kopitiam, which was found to have committed an offence under Section 47(1)(a) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 (Act 133).
The provision carries a maximum fine of RM500, and RM1,000 for repeat offences.
The offence allegedly took place at the restaurant in Taman Mutiara Mas here in Skudai at around 6.20pm on Nov 4, 2024.
Tan was charged under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, and faces sentencing under Section 24(1) of the same Act.
If convicted, he could face up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, or whichever is higher.
MACC prosecuting officer Ameera D'aneez Mohd Shukari requested bail be set at RM10,000 with additional conditions to prevent the accused from absconding.
Lawyer K. Barathi, who represented the accused, however, appealed for a lower bail, stating that Tan supports his wife and both parents.
Judge Ahmad Kamal Arifin then set bail at RM10,000 with one local surety and also ordered Tan to report to the Mutiara Rini police station once a month and surrender his passport to the court.
He then fixed Sept 17 for the next mention of the case for handing over of documents.

[UPDATED] Prosecution witness in Guan Eng trial attacked in home
KUALA LUMPUR: A key prosecution witness in Lim Guan Eng's corruption trial was attacked by 10 men who stormed his home near Petaling Jaya today. The victim sustained multiple injuries to his face and hand after the assailants forced their way into his home, according to a source close to the trial. The attackers reportedly tied up two security guards before entering the house. "The attackers also warned him just to stay at home and not become a hero," said the source. When contacted, Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulnizam Ja'afar confirmed the incident and said a statement would be released soon. The lead prosecutor in Lim's case, Datuk Wan Shahruddin Wan Ladin, meanwhile said the prosecution would raise the matter when the trial resumes on Aug 19. Lim, who is also the DAP adviser, is facing multiple corruption charges at the Sessions Court in relation to the Penang Undersea Tunnel project. He is accused of using his position as the then Penang chief minister to solicit gratification to help Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd (CZCSB) director Datuk Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli secure the project. Lim was alleged to have sought 10 per cent of the company's profit from Zarul. He was also accused of receiving RM3.3 million for himself and causing two plots of state government land to be disposed of to two companies linked to the project.

Cops nab foreign couple in Mukah for drug trafficking
Police photo shows the drugs seized from the couple. MUKAH (Aug 6): A foreign man and woman, believed to be married, were arrested here yesterday on suspicion of drug trafficking. The arrests at 11.20am followed a successful operation conducted by the Mukah District Police Headquarters Narcotics Crime Investigation Department. 'Acting on intelligence and surveillance, the police team raided a white Toyota Fortuner SUV parked in front of a premises near the Ulu Bayan junction on the Mukah-Selangau Road,' Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said in a statement. 'During inspection, police found 22 transparent plastic packets containing crystal-like substances, believed to be methamphetamine, hidden inside a black bag belonging to the male driver.' He said the driver, a 33-year-old man, and his passenger, a 47-year-old foreign woman, were arrested on the spot. Muhamad Rizal said it is believed that the couple has been actively involved in drug distribution in the Mukah-Selangau area and Ulu Balingian, Selangau. In addition to the 63.5 grammes of suspected methamphetamine, police also seized a white Toyota Fortuner SUV, jewellery, and a significant amount of cash. He said the estimated total value of seizures was RM121,000. Urine tests conducted on both suspects returned negative for drug use. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment and a minimum 12 strokes of the rotan upon conviction. Sibu cops launch probe into death of two-year-old boy who fell into manhole
SIBU: Two investigations have been opened into the death of a two-year-old boy who died after falling into a manhole in Jalan Wong Soon Kai here. Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said one of the investigations is being conducted under Section 3(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for negligence or exposing a child in a manner likely to cause physical or emotional harm. The other has been classified as a sudden death report (SDR). 'Anyone found guilty under Section 3(1)(a) may face a fine of up to RM20,000, a prison sentence of up to 10 years, or both,' he said in a statement on Wednesday (August 6). ACP Zulkipli confirmed that they had received a report from a medical officer at Sibu Hospital at about 11.09pm on Monday (August 4) regarding the incident. 'The boy's lifeless body was pulled up from the drain by firefighters on Monday evening and sent to Sibu Hospital. He was found wet, pale, and unresponsive upon arrival at the Emergency Unit, where he was later pronounced dead,' he said. He added that investigations are ongoing to identify any parties who may be involved.
