A railway employee was killed and another seriously injured in an IED blast carried out allegedly by Maoists when a team was inspecting a site where an explosion had occurred earlier in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district early Sunday morning, an RPF official said.
Confirming the incident, a railway official in Chakradharpur said the incident was part of a two-stage attack carried out by Maoists during the 'Shaheed Saptah' (Martyrs' Week), which was held from July 28 to August 3.
'The first IED explosion occurred early on Sunday, damaging a portion of the track. A second IED, likely planted nearby, exploded around 9.30 am as a patrol team was inspecting the affected section,' said a senior RPF official.
The second blast took place between Karamapada and Rejda railway siding, under the Chakradharpur railway division, severely injuring two railway employees. 'Itwa Oraon, a keyman with the Railways, suffered critical leg injuries and was rushed to a hospital. He was declared dead on arrival. His colleague, Budhram Munda, sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment,' he said.
The twin blasts forced authorities to suspend movement on the section of the tracks. An official said that train movement is expected to resume only after a full security clearance.
The CPI (Maoist) has also called for a bandh (shutdown) on August 3 across six states, including Jharkhand, in remembrance of their fallen cadres. The district administration had issued alerts prior to the bandh, and security has been tightened in the region. An official said that additional forces from the CRPF and district police have been deployed as combing operations are underway.

Elgar Parishad case: Court junks Navlakhas plea seeking to live in Delhi

Mumbai, Aug 5 (PTI) A special NIA court here has refused permission to activist Gautam Navlakha, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, to live in Delhi for a brief period while rebuking him for seeking the same relief repeatedly. In the order passed on August 1, judge C S Baviskar said Navlakha, ordered to stay in Mumbai as part of his bail condition, had ingeniously found the trick to file multiple applications seeking same reliefs. The order copy became available on Tuesday. In November 2024, the special court for National Investigation Agency cases had granted him permission to stay in Delhi for two months. In his latest application, Navlakha relied on this order while seeking permission to live in Delhi again for 45 days. 'It is not at all expected. I recapitulate, the thing you shall not do directly, cannot do even indirectly," the court said in the order. While rejecting the application, it was restraining itself from imposing cost on Navlakha, it added. The earlier permission to live in Delhi for two months did not give him the license to claim the same liberty repeatedly, the court said. The Bombay High Court, while granting Navlakha bail, had laid down that he shall remain in Mumbai considering the seriousness of the offences in this case, the special court said. 'The applicant/accused may show total disregard towards the expectations of the High Court in its order that he should reside within the territorial jurisdiction of the Court. However, the directions of the High Court are happily binding on this Court and this Court has to follow it scrupulously," the order said. Navlakha (72), a permanent resident of Delhi, was arrested in the case in April 2020. He was granted bail in 2024. The case relates to alleged inflammatory speeches made at the Elgar Parishad conclave held in Pune on December 31, 2017, which police claimed triggered violence the next day near the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial near Pune. Sixteen activists were arrested in the case. PTI SP KRK view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. PM Modi compliments Amit Shah for becoming longest-serving Union Home Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) praised Union Home Minister Amit Shah for becoming the longest-serving incumbent in his Ministry. In his address to the National Democratic Alliance's parliamentary party group, Mr. Modi noted that Mr. Shah has become the longest serving Home Minister, overtaking Bharatiya Janata Party veteran L. K. Advani, a co-founder of the group in 1998. 'It is just the beginning,' he said, adding that there was a long way to go. Mr. Shah has been at the helm since the Modi government took over for the second time in 2019, and his stint so far is of six years and 65 days. His tenure has been marked by several key decisions, such as the abrogation of Article 370, and actions on the internal security front, including a series of successful anti-Maoist operations. The Union Home Minister also received compliments from his Cabinet and party colleagues. Congratulating him, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said: '...you have achieved a historic milestone. This historic achievement was recorded today, on August 5. On a similar historic day, August 5, 2019, you announced the abrogation of Article 370 in Parliament, adding a new chapter to India's history.' 'Under your leadership, India has dealt a decisive blow to Maoism and taken historic decisions like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Your unwavering commitment to national security has further strengthened the confidence and pride of the nation's people. Your foresight, determination, and decisions taken in the interest of the nation are commendable. Wishing you abundant success, glory, and a long-lasting public life filled with numerous achievements,' he said through his X handle. Speaking with the media, BJP MP Jagdambika Pal said Mr. Shah had taken historic decisions, including the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Via his X handle, the party's IT cell in-charge Amit Malviya said: 'Union Home Minister Amit Shah's tenure has been marked by bold, historic decisions -- from the abrogation of Article 370 to a firm crackdown on terrorism and strengthening of internal security.'
