Kolkata: Civic bodies in Kolkata, Salt Lake and New Town are bracing for heavy rain and keeping teams ready to flush out excess storm water to prevent waterlogging.
KMC has instructed engineers at major drainage pumping stations, including Palmerbazar, Ballygunge, Dhapa Lock, Mominpore, Ultadanga and Southern Avenue, to ensure all primary pumps are functioning to remove storm water.
In BMC areas, the civic authorities have been cleaning drainage lines with suction machines while Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) has kept five pump houses ready. After a few spots were waterlogged on Monday, New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has identified similar areas, like Shrachi crossing, Eastern High bus stand, Mani Casadona and Thakdari crossing, and cleared the drains.
KMC has prepared a roster to deploy staff from the drainage department in areas known to be susceptible to waterlogging while borough-specific desilting equipment will be deployed when necessary. "A disaster management team positioned at KMC headquarters will respond to emergencies during rain," said an offiicial.
Surveillance of lock-gates along the Hooghly will be enhanced to reduce flooding risk in BBD Bagh, Kalighat, Chetla, New Alipore, and Tollygunge.

On Monday, Tarak Singh, MMiC supervising the sewerage and drainage department, led civic officials to inspect outfall canals near EM Bypass. He noted that some canals, like Guniagachi and Suti, require thorough dredging.
He visited Bantala and Chowbagha pumping stations, directing staff to operate pumps to prevent flooding in catchment areas.
BMC is regularly using gully pit-emptier machines.
"Drains and canals have been cleaned," said an NKDA official. "The drainage lines have been cleaned with suction jetting machines," said an NDITA official.

Noida's leaning threats: Storm leaves a line of tilted poles near Sec 101 metro station

Noida: Several electricity poles damaged during last week's storm continue to lean precariously outside Sector 101 metro station, endangering commuters. Locals said some poles were damaged in recent rainfall, while others have been tilted for months. Noida Authority said PVVNL installed the poles and should remove them. Gaurav Kumar, who works at a grocery store in the area, said, "People continue to move around the tilted poles, because of the absence of any barricades or warning signage." PVVNL officials, however, said these poles are dead and are not in use. "Even if the poles are old and not in use, they can fall anytime. Children use this road to go to school. Who will be responsible if something happens?" asked another local, requesting anonymity. RP Singh, general manager, Noida Authority, said these power structures come under PVVNL. PVVNL Noida's chief engineer Sanjay Kumar Jain said a team was directed to visit the spot and take necessary actions. Saurabh Pandey, executive engineer, PVVNL, said some poles near the drain in front of Sector 101 metro station are dead and not in use. "It appears those poles are not in use as new infrastructure was developed in the area. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo We will get them removed soon," he said. On May 21, a severe dust storm along with rainfall wreaked havoc across Noida and Greater Noida, triggering massive traffic disruptions, property damage, and chaos on major roads, particularly the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. Hundreds of commuters found themselves stranded for nearly three hours after a large electricity pole collapsed around 9pm, blocking the Greater Noida-bound carriageway of the expressway. The storm also brought down nearly 200 trees, streetlights, and hoardings, leaving key routes choked and impassable for hours. Three persons died and seven suffered injuries during severe weather conditions in Ghaziabad earlier this month. These incidents took place at four different locations. A 40-year-old man died after he was crushed by a tree in Madhuban Bapudham while returning home from office. In another incident, a wall of a private school collapsed on a slum in Khoda Colony, resulting in the death of a 30-year-old woman and injuring six members of her family. In the third incident, a 35-year-old woman died after she fell into a drain during the storm, following the sound of lightning, while returning to her house in Masuri. In the fourth incident, a hoarding collapsed at the GDA intersection in Nandgram, causing severe injuries to a motorcyclist who became trapped under it. In Noida, a 45-year-old teacher died after a tree fell on him inside NTPC township on Wednesday night. Ramkishan, who worked with a school, had stepped out around 7pm for a walk. He was only 100 metres away from his house when the tree crushed him to death. Residents of Migsun Ultimo in Greater Noida's Omicron-3 protested against the builder after a large metal shed fell from the terrace of a 21-floor tower, killing a 50-year-old woman and her 2-year-old grandson. The child's parents are both IT professionals from Bokaro in Jharkhand. Residents staged a protest at the Omicron roundabout, demanding action against the builder. Cops took five persons into custody for blocking the road, after which representatives of the builder and residents held discussions.

‘Chunks of our town could be gone': As wildfires rip across the prairies, Flin Flon, Manitoba, empties under a sky of smoke and fear

The city of Flin Flon in Manitoba , Canada, stands nearly deserted as an aggressive wildfire continues to threaten the region as of May 31, 2025. Approximately 5,000 residents, including municipal officials and healthcare workers, have been evacuated due to the encroaching flames and heavy smoke. Mayor George Fontaine expressed grave concern, stating, "Unless we get one heck of a boost, it's projected to take chunks out of our town and surrounding areas." The wildfire, which originated in Creighton, Saskatchewan, earlier this week, has rapidly spread into Manitoba, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds. The situation has been exacerbated by the lack of rainfall in the forecast and temperatures ranging from the low to high 20s Celsius. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... He emphasized the unprecedented scale of the evacuation, noting that over 17,000 residents have been displaced across the province. The Canadian Armed Forces have been mobilized to assist with evacuations, particularly in remote Indigenous communities like the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation, where airlifts have been necessary due to impassable roads. Evacuees are being accommodated in emergency centers across Manitoba, with facilities as far south as Winkler, near the US border, opening their doors to those affected. The influx of displaced individuals has stretched local resources, prompting calls for additional support from neighboring provinces and the federal government. The United States has also contributed by dispatching 125 firefighters to aid in combating the blazes. In Alberta, the community of Swan Hills has seen 1,300 residents evacuated due to a separate wildfire threat. The cumulative effect of these fires has led to deteriorating air quality, with smoke drifting into parts of the United States, affecting cities like Minneapolis and Chicago. The collective efforts of emergency services, government agencies, and international partners remain focused on safeguarding communities and mitigating the impact of these devastating wildfires.

Rainfall may decrease from Sunday, hot & humid weather to return: IMD

1 2 Bhubaneswar: After hurtling into the state nearly two weeks before its normal onset, the southwest monsoon is showing signs of slowing down with IMD predicting rainfall may become sporadic after Sunday, with hot and humid weather likely to return. "Weather conditions are currently not favourable for further advancement of monsoon across the state in the next 5-7 days," said director of IMD's regional centre, Manorama Mohanty. "Currently, the maximum temperature is at least five degrees below normal in most places. But hot and humid conditions may also return in the coming week," she added. The forecast suggests a reduction in rainfall intensity after Monday. While isolated rain or thunderstorm are expected in districts like Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Mayurbhanj, dry weather is likely to prevail over most parts of the state from June 3 to June 7. Several parts of the state witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall on Friday, with the IMD forecasting more rain and thunderstorm. Nabarangpur, Mayurbhanj, Ganjam, Bargarh, Deogarh, Nayagarh, Nuapada and Sundargarh districts received heavy to very heavy rain. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Nandahandi in Nabarangpur district received the highest rainfall of 150 mm, followed by 130 mm in Jamda (Mayurbhanj) and 110 mm in Bhanjanagar (Ganjam) in the past 24 hours.
