Reflecting on a decade of businesses growth with the Entrepreneur Programme
What started as a local initiative to uplift small businesses has become a national model of success – and the iLembe Chamber's entrepreneur programme is just getting started.
Over the past 15 years, the programme has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs grow their businesses and create jobs.
This was reaffirmed during the launch of its 15th edition last week, where Chamber CEO Cobus Oelofse presented a comprehensive 10-year impact review.
The findings highlighted significant growth among previous participants, with many reporting increased turnover, entry into new markets, the launch of new products and improved profitability.
One of the programme's standout achievements has been job creation, with participating businesses reporting an 82% increase in employment after completion.
Guests at the launch also heard firsthand accounts from 2024 winners, including Sithembile Ndlovu – known as The Mushroom Queen -and Claire Butler of Humidity Hulk.
Both entrepreneurs shared how the programme helped them navigate challenges, streamline operations and explore new opportunities.
'At one point, I had to ask The North Coast Courier to stop advertising my product because the demand became overwhelming. But I'm truly grateful for the support,' said Ndlovu.
Similarly Butler said her business had skyrocketed with the exposure she had received.
The report also noted improvements in financial management, upgraded systems and more resilient business models among past participants.
The 2025 edition of the programme will run over 10 weeks, with 20 finalists receiving mentorship, business training and assistance in developing professional business plans.
Supported nationally by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the programme will expand next year to include the Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber.
'We're proud to share iLembe's success and continue supporting small businesses across the country,' said Oelofse.
Key local partners include Enterprise iLembe, King Shaka International Airport, Siza Water, AVON Peaking Power, ENGIE Peakers Operations and The North Coast Courier.
Applications for 2025 are now open. Entrepreneurs can apply online at www.theentrepreneur.net.za, collect forms from the iLembe Chamber offices or submit entries via drop boxes around the district.

Popular African destination to launch new visa-on-arrival system

Egypt, a popular African travel destination for tourists from far and wide, will be piloting a new visa-on-arrival system this June. According to Travel News , the country will launch a new digital, self-service visa-on-arrival system at Cairo International Airport starting mid-June. The new visa system will offer a number of options for travellers to obtain emergency visas upon arrival through a QR code. Visa payments will also be made electronically through self-service kiosks at the airport terminals or via a dedicated mobile app. Travellers will reportedly benefit greatly from the new system, including last-minute arrivals without visas, those with incomplete documents, or individuals who were unable to secure a visa prior to departure. Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, explained that the system will also help streamline the entry procedures for obtaining emergency visas and reduce congestion and overcrowding at airports. This new pilot program is part of the African nation's larger efforts to enhance tourist's visits, improve the efficiency of the entry process, as well as expand Egypt's capacity to accommodate higher tourist arrivals. Pros and cons of digital transformation in the developing world

Across the world, digital technologies are reshaping how people live, work and connect. From artificial intelligence (AI) to high-speed internet and digital platforms, this transformation offers great potential for economic growth and social progress. However, with that promise comes a critical challenge: ensuring that the digital future is equitable, sustainable and inclusive. Emerging technologies have already started driving significant gains and AI alone could add as much as $4.4 trillion (R78 trillion) annually to the global economy, according to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report . Digital tools are helping small businesses tap into global markets, while fintech services and online platforms are enabling entrepreneurs to reach customers and capital more easily than ever. For micro, small and medium enterprises, the digital economy offers unprecedented opportunities for job creation and innovation – if they have access to skills training, financing, and reliable internet. In developing countries, digital infrastructure is offering a chance to surge ahead of traditional development paths. E-learning and e-commerce are opening doors in rural and under-served communities, creating new paths to prosperity and participation in the global economy. Internet access remains an issue However, the digital divide remains a concern. Over 2.6 billion people still lack internet access and many face barriers due to cost, lack of digital literacy and infrastructure challenges. This inequity leaves a lot of people without access to essential services, education and economic opportunities – threatening to widen rather than close global disparities. Additionally, the benefits of digitalisation are not evenly distributed. While some workers and industries gain from automation and AI, others face job displacement. Estimates suggest that AI-driven automation could create 11 million jobs globally while displacing nine million, with uneven impacts across regions and sectors. To manage this transition responsibly, governments, businesses and civil society must invest in education and social protections. Ensuring that the digital economy is dynamic and fair requires a concerted effort to build inclusive digital infrastructure and policy frameworks. As the world accelerates into a digital future, the choices made today will determine whether this transformation serves as a bridge to shared prosperity – or becomes a barrier that deepens existing divides.
