UNHCR Warns of Humanitarian Crisis in Eastern Chad

Morocco Worlda day ago

Rabat – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has warned that the displacement of around a million refugees from Darfur into eastern Chad is becoming a humanitarian crisis and has called for an international response.
The Sudanese civil war has uprooted the country's stability and citizens' safety in areas like the southern province of Darfur, where violence is rampant and has been intensifying since 2023. This has forced millions to flee their homes.
The UN has estimated that around 1.2 million Sudanese refugees from the Darfur region have fled to find shelter and sanctuary in neighbouring Chad. Since the Sudanese civil war broke out and intensified in 2023, 844,000 people have crossed the border.
Prior to this conflict, Chad had been hosting roughly 409,000 Sudanese refugees who fled the country during the Darfur genocide under President Omar Al-Bashir between 2003 and 2005. This conflict killed nearly 300,000 people and displaced 2.7 million.
Around 20,000 people have fled the country in the last two weeks, crossing the border through areas like the Wadi Fira Province. Most of these new arrivals come from Northern Darfur, where violence has sharply escalated.
Armed gangs and the Sudanese military have moved through the areas, causing great amounts of violence , with villages being burnt to the ground and reports indicating that women and children have been raped and killed.
The situation of the refugees is extremely dire; many have been subjected to harsh conditions, including enduring robberies and extortion at the checkpoints, while others, including women and children, arrived wounded.
Meanwhile, Chad itself has also been going through a difficult period with new governance under General Mahamat Deby Itno, after the death of President Idriss Deby. Local communities and authorities have stated that the influx has left them overstretched.
Humanitarian resources across eastern Chad are limited, with critical shortages in water, shelter, health, education, and protection. This has increased the perilous nature of the journey that these refugees have been forced to undertake.
The UNHCR has recently called for the international community to urgently step up and support the UN response to the crisis. The UN Special Representative in Central Africa Abdou Abarry raised the alarm, stating during a recent meeting of the UN Security Council that Chad is trying to provide additional emergency humanitarian assistance and stabilization programs but needs more support.
This growing refugee crisis is the latest tragic development in the Sudanese conflict, which is expected to have a big impact on the region.

Gulf Cooperation Council Reaffirms Support for Morocco's Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

Rabat – The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has once again reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara region, reaffirming its long-standing position during the latest session of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24), being held in New York from June 9 to 20. Representing the six GCC member states — Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Qatar — the Kuwaiti delegate delivered a joint statement emphasizing the importance of the strategic partnership between the GCC and Morocco. The statement highlighted the shared commitment to advancing the joint action plan and defending Morocco's unity, security, and territorial integrity. In addition to reaffirming support for Morocco's position on the Sahara, the GCC countries welcomed the most recent resolution adopted by the UN Security Council concerning the region. The bloc also praised the continued efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara, encouraging all parties to resume dialogue under UN auspices with a spirit of seriousness, realism, and mutual respect. Earlier this year, GCC Secretary-General Jassim Al Budaiwi also expressed the Council's firm backing of Morocco's territorial integrity, particularly in the southern provinces of the Western Sahara. Speaking in March, Al Budaiwi described the issue as a matter of principle deeply rooted in the strong and strategic ties between Morocco and the Gulf states. At the time, the GCC further reiterated its support for the UN-led political process seeking a realistic and mutually acceptable solution to the regional dispute. In this context, the Council welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2756, adopted in October 2024, which extended the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission MINURSO until October 2025. The resolution also urged all concerned parties, including Algeria, to actively engage in the process. Beyond its support for Morocco's sovereignty, the GCC commended the North African country's broader regional efforts. Notably, the Council endorsed Morocco's Atlantic Initiative — a strategic vision aimed at improving access for landlocked Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean, thereby strengthening regional economic integration and cooperation. Changsha/Forum on China-Africa Cooperation : Morocco Reiterates African Roots, Excluding Separatist Entity

The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), held on June 11 in Changsha, capital of China's Hunan province, followed on June 12 by the official inauguration of the 4th China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo, once again clearly and unequivocally confirmed that the so-called 'sadr' has no legitimacy or place in Sino-African cooperation mechanisms. Like previous editions of the Forum, notably the Beijing Summit in September 2024, this event was attended exclusively by sovereign African states, members of the United Nations and recognized by the international community, as well as the People's Republic of China and the African Union Commission. In full compliance with the principles of sovereignty and international legality, the presence of a chimerical separatist entity was once again neither requested nor expected. This observation reinforces the Chinese partner's consistent position that only fully sovereign states participate in continental and international cooperation frameworks. Thus, the recurrent absence of the so-called "sadr" from serious international forums belies unfounded allegations of any participation by this entity in the strategic partnerships of the African continent. It confirms that this entity has never had, and never will have, a place either within a united Africa, or in its international relations based on the legitimacy, cooperation and sovereignty of states. US Pressures Countries to Boycott UN Conference on Palestine

Rabat – The United States is actively lobbying foreign governments to boycott a United Nations conference on Palestine, jointly sponsored by France and Saudi Arabia, according to a leaked US diplomatic cable obtained by Reuters. The event, scheduled for June 17–20 in New York, focuses on pushing a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. The US cable, sent to various countries on Tuesday, explicitly warns against attending the conference, reportedly framing participation as 'anti-Israel' and against US foreign policy interests. It claims that recognition of a Palestinian state during the gathering would amount to 'supporting our enemies' and undermine ongoing efforts to end the 'war in Gaza' and secure the release of Israeli hostages. France and Saudi Arabia, both close allies of the US, are co-hosting the event, with France reportedly pressuring the UK and European nations to recognize Palestinian statehood at the conference. This has sparked fierce US opposition, with Washington reportedly warning its allies not to proceed with such recognition despite demands from Arab states. The US position stands in stark contradiction to decades of international consensus recognizing the territories of East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza—occupied by Israel in 1967—as the rightful heartland of a future Palestinian state. Yet, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee bluntly declared to Bloomberg News that a Palestinian state in the West Bank is 'no longer a US policy goal,' callously suggesting that Israel's 'Muslim neighbours' should sacrifice their own lands instead. The memo stressed that 'unilaterally recognizing a Palestinian state would effectively render October 7 Palestinian Independence Day' — reflecting the entrenched US-Israeli mindset that treats every day as October 7 and labels any pro-Palestinian voice as a Hamas fighter. In the same vein, the US recently condemned the coordinated move by the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Norway to sanction far-right Israeli ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir — the latter who has been convicted of terror-related charges by Israel itself.
