At least 19 killed as Bangladesh air force plane crashes into school campus

Dubai Eye21-07-2025
At least 19 people were killed and 164 injured as a Bangladesh air force training jet crashed into a college and school campus in the capital Dhaka on Monday after experiencing a technical problem shortly after take-off, a military spokesperson said.
The F-7 BGI jet took off at 1:06 p.m. (0706 GMT) from the Bangladesh Air Force base in Kurmitola, Dhaka, as part of a routine training mission, but encountered a mechanical failure, said the spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sami Ud Dowla Chowdhury.
"The pilot ... made a valiant attempt to divert the aircraft away from densely populated areas. Despite his best efforts, the aircraft ... crashed into a two-storey building belonging to Milestone School and College," he said.
The pilot was among those killed in the incident, the military said, adding that a committee had been formed to investigate its cause.
The F-7 BGI is the final and most advanced variant in China's Chengdu J-7/F-7 aircraft family, according to Jane's Information Group. Bangladesh signed a contract for 16 aircraft in 2011 and deliveries were completed by 2013.
The Chengdu F-7 is the licence-built version of the Soviet MiG-21.
Videos of the aftermath of the crash showed a big fire near a lawn emitting a thick plume of smoke into the sky, as crowds watched from a distance.

Firefighters sprayed water on the mangled remains of the plane, which appeared to have rammed into the side of a building, damaging iron grills and creating a gaping hole in the structure, footage filmed by Reuters showed.
"A third-grade student was brought in dead, and three others, aged 12, 14 and 40, were admitted to the hospital," said Bidhan Sarker, head of the burn unit at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where some victims were taken.
Images from the scene also showed people screaming and crying as others tried to comfort them.
"When I was picking (up) my kids and went to the gate, I realised something came from behind ... I heard an explosion. When I looked back, I only saw fire and smoke," said Masud Tarik, a teacher at the school.
The incident comes a little over a month after an Air India plane crashed on top of a medical college hostel in neighbouring India's Ahmedabad city, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 on the ground, marking the world's worst aviation disaster in a decade.

UAE carries out airdrops over Gaza for second consecutive day as part of ‘Birds of Goodness' operation

The UAE, in cooperation with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, has continued its humanitarian airdrop operations over isolated areas of the Gaza Strip as part of the 'Birds of Goodness" initiative, conducting its 55th airdrop today, marking the second consecutive day of airborne aid deliveries. These efforts fall under the umbrella of 'Operation Chivalrous Knight 3', reaffirming the UAE's steadfast commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and alleviating their humanitarian suffering, especially in areas inaccessible by land due to the ongoing security situation. Since the launch of the 'Birds of Goodness' initiative, approximately 3,750 tonnes of vital humanitarian aid have been airdropped. These include essential food items and critical relief supplies designed to meet the urgent needs of families affected by the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This operation is part of the UAE's broader, sustained humanitarian response to the deteriorating conditions in the Strip. The UAE reaffirmed its ongoing coordination with regional and international partners to ensure that humanitarian assistance reaches those in need in the Strip through all available channels, air, land, and sea. These efforts reflect the UAE's deep-rooted humanitarian values and its leading global role in relief and aid operations. Follow Emirates 24|7 on Google News.

Israel attacks so-called 'safe zone' despite military pause

The Israeli military has carried out several attacks across Gaza, killing over 53 people - including 32 aid seekers - despite announcing a "tactical suspension" of operations in three areas. According to Al Jazeera correspondent Hind Khoudary, air strikes hit an Israel-designated "safe zone" in Gaza City. A bakery was targeted in the attack, with at least five Palestinians killed - including a woman and her four children - and several others wounded, according to health officials. Early on Sunday, the Israeli army announced a 10-hour daily pause of military operations from 10am (7am GMT) to 8pm (5pm GMT) in the areas of al-Mawasi, Deir al-Balah and Gaza City. The military said this was part of a framework of "humanitarian efforts to expand the entry of aid", adding that the plan included "sustainably secured corridors" from 6am to 11pm. The death toll from Israel's war on Gaza has risen to 59,821, with over 144,851 wounded since 7 October 2023. Airdropped aid amid siege Despite warnings from international organisations that airdropped aid could endanger civilians, the Israeli military announced late on Saturday that it would resume aerial deliveries of humanitarian packages to Gaza. "Aerial airdrops of aid will resume. The airdrop includes 7 pallets of aid containing flour, sugar, and canned food," it said in a post on X. Several rights groups and experts have criticised this method of relief distribution, warning that it puts Palestinian lives at risk and noting that the quantity of aid is insufficient. "Airdrops will not reverse the deepening starvation. They are expensive, inefficient & can even kill starving civilians. It is a distraction & screensmoke," UN chief Philippe Lazzarini wrote in a post on X. "Driving aid through is much easier, more effective, faster, cheaper & safer. It's more dignified for the people of #Gaza." A Middle East Eye correspondent on the ground in Gaza said a few packages were airdropped over the Zeitoun area, east of Gaza City, and in the Tuam area, north of the Gaza Strip. The two areas have been noted as "extremely dangerous" as they fall under the Israeli-designated expulsion zones in Gaza, where Palestinians risk being directly targeted even as unarmed civilians. Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced plans to "enable safe movement" of UN convoys delivering food, essentials and medicine supplies. One MEE correspondent reported that 10 trucks entered through the Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossing, with several others passing through the Zikim crossing. He added that two trucks entered via the Morag Corridor but were looted. It remains unclear whether any of the aid deliveries have successfully reached civilians.

DOTr presses MRT-7 contractors, skyway management over Flooding Concerns

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) called on the contractors of the MRT Line 7 project and the Skyway management to address construction-related issues allegedly contributing to flooding in Quezon City. Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said he had met with the contractors of the MRT-7 project and directed them to clear any obstructions blocking drainage systems along Commonwealth Avenue. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) earlier said the construction of the MRT-7 Batasan Station may have partially obstructed the flow of rainwater, worsening flooding in the area. According to the agency, a manhole was built directly above existing drainage pipe culverts, and a footing wall may also be impeding water flow. Dizon also raised concerns about the Skyway's downspouts, which were reportedly not connected to proper drainage. The transportation chief said he instructed both SMC and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to coordinate and fix the issue. The SMC denied that MRT-7 structures caused the flooding. The company said all project components in the area were constructed outside existing drainage lines and in compliance with approved plans. It added that while a portion of the drainage system was affected during earlier phases of construction, it was fully restored and certified by the DPWH in March 2025. SMC also said an inspection after the recent flooding revealed that the drainage outlet was heavily clogged with plastic waste and debris, which may have reduced its capacity to carry rainwater. The company noted that no documents have been presented so far to prove that MRT-7 structures obstructed drainage. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that six people have died due to the combined effects of Tropical Cyclone Crising, the southwest monsoon (Habagat), and a low-pressure area. Over 1.2 million people across the country, excluding Eastern Visayas, have been affected.
