New Delhi [India], May 16 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday congratulated the ITBP jawans for their successful expedition to Mount Makalu, the world's fifth highest peak.
In his tweet, Amit Shah said, 'Congratulations to the ITBP jawans on their stellar success in summiting Mount Makalu, the fifth highest peak in the world.'
He added, 'Braving extreme weather conditions, the ITBP personnel unfurled the Tiranga at the peak of the mountain and carried out a cleanliness drive inspired by PM Shri @narendramodi Ji's Swacch Bharat Abhiyan and removed 150 kg of garbage.'
Amit Shah also appreciated the personnel for their courage and commitment.
Meanwhile, in a landmark achievement, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) successfully scaled Mt. Makalu (8,485 m), the world's fifth highest peak, on April 19, marking the first-ever ascent of the peak by any Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), the force said.
The summit was part of ITBP's historic International Mountaineering Expedition to Mt. Makalu and Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m), flagged off from ITBP Headquarters in New Delhi on March 21. This dual-peak mission, a first in the force's history, showcased ITBP's enduring legacy in high-altitude operations
Led by Deputy Commandant Anoop Kumar Negi, with Deputy Commandant Nihas Suresh as deputy leader, the 12-member expedition team was split into two groups of six. The Makalu group recorded an 83 per cent summit success rate, with five climbers reaching the peak around 08:15 hrs on April 19. The successful summiteers included Assistant Commandant Sanjay Kumar, Head Constable (HC) Sonam Stobdan, HC Pradeep Panwar, HC Bahadur Chand, and Constable Vimal Kumar.
Meanwhile, the Annapurna team battled extreme conditions, including blizzards and whiteouts, reaching an altitude of 7,940 meters--just 150 meters shy of the summit--before retreating safely at 14:45 hrs on the same day.
In line with its 'Clean Himalaya - Save Glacier' campaign, the expedition collected 150 kg of non-biodegradable waste from high-altitude camps, reinforcing ITBP's environmental commitment.
With the successful ascent of Mt. Makalu, the ITBP has now scaled six of the world's 14 eight-thousanders, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Dhaulagiri, Mt. Lhotse, and Mt. Manaslu. The force has conquered a total of 229 peaks to date, underscoring its unmatched expertise and resilience in some of the harshest terrains on earth. (ANI)

According to a post shared by CM Sukhu on X, the development projects are aimed at promoting overall growth in the region. The Durgesh Aranya Zoological Park at Bankhandi is being developed at a cost of Rs 619 crore. It will house 78 species, including Asiatic lions, hog deer, monitor lizards, crocodiles, gharials and various bird species. 'Additionally, Durgesh Aranya Wildlife Sanctuary will boost tourism activities and provide employment and self-employment opportunities to the local youth, thereby strengthening the local economy,' the X post said. The Chief Minister also distributed land allotment certificates to 89 Pong Dam settlers. Each family will receive Rs 3 lakh in financial aid for building houses, as per another X post by the CM. 'During my visit to Dehra, two daughters informed me that there was no means of transport available here during the rainy season. I want to assure that the construction of Nandpur bridge will be completed by December this year,' CM Sukhu wrote in the X post. While addressing the public gathering, CM Sukhu also criticised the previous BJP-led government and accused the Centre of ignoring the state's needs. He said, 'The previous double-engine government had looted the wealth of the state, and we have come to protect it. We want a medical device park, but not by looting the wealth of the state. We have also discussed with the Prime Minister to protect the interests of the state. We are fully committed to protecting your rights.' (ANI)

Modi to inaugurate world's highest rail bridge
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the world's highest railway bridge, built over the Chenab River in Reasi district on June 6. Union minister Jitendra Singh confirmed this on Tuesday. Along with the bridge, the Prime Minister will also launch the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat train service. The Chenab railway bridge, now officially part of the Katra to Sangaldan rail section, stands as the world's highest railway arch bridge. This will be the first-ever train link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India. The bridge towers 359 meters above the Chenab River, surpassing even the Eiffel Tower in height. For the first time, Kashmir will be directly linked to the rest of India via rail. This bridge is a key component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which spans 272 kilometers and includes 36 tunnels totaling 119 kilometers and nearly 1,000 bridges. The terrain's complexity and the region's seismic sensitivity posed major engineering challenges, but Indian engineers successfully executed this ambitious project, a feat many once deemed impossible. Railway officials highlighted the Chenab Bridge's structural strength, mentioning that it can withstand wind speeds over 250 km/h and was built using about 30,000 metric tons of steel. One foundation, known as S20, is so massive it covers nearly one-third of a football field, specifying the scale and vision behind the structure. The entire USBRL project represents not just engineering excellence but also New India's resolve and determination. With electric engines powered by specially designed overhead equipment (OHE) and advanced tunnel safety systems, the railway line is built for resilience and long-term service. The train service was earlier planned to begin on April 19 but was postponed after cancellation of PM Modi's visit due to bad weather. After the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, this railway project now holds even more importance than before.
