Knoxville's Ken Locke Stadium holds ribbon cutting
The Knoxville Alumni Association purchased the Ken Locke Stadium from the Knoxville Community School District last October.
Danielle Huffine, the President of the Knoxville Alumni Association, said the ribbon cutting spreads awareness of the events that will be held at Ken Locke this summer.
'We're doing a ribbon cutting because this is our grand opening, I guess you would say, of all the things that we want to do at the stadium this year. So we're just kind of invited all of the public to come and join us so we can do this right now,' Huffine said.
Iowa House Republicans, candidates describe Gov. Reynolds pipeline veto as 'betrayal'
Ken Locke Stadium is named after Ken Locke, a football player who died from injuries sustained while playing at the stadium.
Huffine said the Locke has already been used by the community.
'We have had youth soccer here for the last few months. However, we're getting into a concert series. Plus we're going to be having some semi-pro football,' Huffine said.
The Knoxville Alumni Association plans to renovate parts of the stadium.
'One of the things we want to do is build a community center for the community to hold any type of an event, whether that be class reunion and whether that be a family reunion inside flea markets, things like that. The pickleball courts, of course. And we just kind of want to have different types of events here that's more community oriented, which includes this upcoming concert series that starts June 21, is our first concert,' Huffine said.
Huffine said that planned renovations will be expensive so the association is focused on fundraising.
'We're trying to raise money right now to do all of these events. For several, it takes money. And so one of the big things we have coming up is on August 30, we're doing along the way, it's a concert. So what that is, is basically we're going to have probably, I think, four or five different bands there, including Jason Brown maybe, and some other locals, and we're taking sponsorship for those,' Huffine said.

House panel dives into sports broadcasting markets, 'blackout' exemptions
A group of House Republicans is seeking testimony from the heads of major sports leagues on sports broadcasting markets and "blackout" exemptions, citing concerns about antitrust violations. In an announcement on Monday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Subcommittee on the Administrative State, Regulatory Reform, and Antitrust Chairman Scott Fitzgerald (R-Wis.) said they had written to the commissioners of the NHL, MLB and NFL over "blacked out" games and media rights negotiations, asking for their testimony. "The current state of the sports broadcasting market has changed considerably since the 1960s. The majority of sports viewership now occurs outside of traditional network broadcasting," the lawmakers wrote. "As a result, most of the distribution agreements that a sports league enters into are subject to antitrust challenges, while a narrow subset are not, creating legal uncertainty, distorting the market, and "effectively expanding the blind spot for potential antitrust violations." The committee noted that Congress passed the Sports Broadcasting Act (SBA) in 1961 to allow professional sports leagues to coordinate their broadcasting decisions in an effort to help protect smaller teams and the leagues as a whole. Sports leagues are allowed a "blackout exemption" to prevent games from being broadcast "within the home territory of a member club of the league on a day when such club is playing a game at home," according to the current SBA. As more broadcast networks shift resources into streaming and away from linear television, sports media rights remain the single largest driver of audience share and ad revenue for major media companies. Many traditional broadcast outlets have meanwhile seen major streamers like Netflix, Amazon and Apple disrupt the market with multi-billion-dollar deals with pro sports leagues to broadcast games.

Pennsylvania House makes last-ditch effort to stave off cuts at Philadelphia's public transit agency
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania's House of Representatives met hastily Monday to pass transportation funding legislation in a last-ditch effort to stave off deep service cuts at the Philadelphia region's public transit agency. The Democratic-backed bill passed the chamber, 108-95, over the objection of nearly every Republican in the chamber. The nearly $1 billion bill has the support of Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, and includes funding for highways, too. But it faces an uncertain future in the Republican-controlled Senate, where the GOP majority has resisted increasing aid for transit. The bill increases aid for transit agency operations by $292 million, or about 25% more, with the lion's share of the money going to the Philadelphia-based Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. SEPTA has said it cannot keep waiting for more aid before it makes cuts, which it says would be more drastic than any undertaken by a major transit agency in the United States. The nation's sixth-largest public transit system has warned that it will cut half its services by Jan. 1 and be unable to provide enhanced service for major tourist events next year. Those include FIFA World Cup matches in Philadelphia, events surrounding the celebration of the nation's 250th birthday, Major League Baseball's all-star game, the PGA Championship and NCAA March Madness games. The deadline push comes after two years of stalemate, amid transit struggles nationwide with rising costs and lagging ridership. SEPTA has said that, on Thursday, it will begin a 10-day preparation period for 20% across-the-board service cuts. Those take effect Aug. 24 and include eliminating bus routes with lower ridership and reducing the frequency of bus, trolley and rail services across the region. Under the plan, fares will then rise by 21.5% on Sept. 1 and, soon after, the agency will impose a hiring freeze. It will carry out another service cut on Jan. 1 that will mean that it will have eliminated half its current services, it has said. Democrats say shoring up public transit agencies around the state is critical to the economy and making sure people can get to work, school and medical appointments. Republicans have objected that transit agencies need to become more efficient, highways need more state funding and transit riders should pay higher fares. Transit agencies in Pittsburgh and elsewhere around Pennsylvania also say they are making cuts or raising fares, or both. ___ Follow Marc Levy on X at

Padres make 2 roster moves before Diamondbacks clash
The post Padres make 2 roster moves before Diamondbacks clash appeared first on ClutchPoints. The San Diego Padres made two key roster moves on Tuesday ahead of the second game in a pivotal four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The moves came in response to a 6-2 loss in Monday's opener, as the team looks to strengthen its bullpen and rebound in a matchup that could have major implications in the NL West standings. The Padres took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share the update, confirming that right-handed pitcher Sean Reynolds has been recalled from Triple-A El Paso, while left-hander JP Sears was optioned to the same affiliate. 'We have recalled RHP Sean Reynolds from Triple-A El Paso and optioned LHP JP Sears to Triple-A El Paso.' This decision comes as the club continues its push to gain ground on the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers. Sitting at 62-51, San Diego remains three games back in the NL West standings and has gone 7-3 over its last 10 games, keeping pressure on L.A. With a dominant 36-19 record at Petco Park, the club is looking to maximize its momentum during this home stand. Reynolds returns to the majors with the expectation of shoring up the bullpen, especially as San Diego battles through injuries to key arms. Starter Michael King remains on the injured list with a shoulder issue, though he's nearing a return. Meanwhile, Jhony Brito is out for the season following UCL and flexor tendon surgery, thinning the team's options even further. Sears, who was acquired from the Athletics just before the MLB trade deadline as part of the deal that also brought in Mason Miller, was optioned to Triple-A following Monday's 6-2 loss to Arizona. In his debut with the club, the left-hander surrendered 10 hits and five earned runs over five innings, recording just four strikeouts. The move appears to be a strategic one, as San Diego looks to recalibrate its bullpen depth during a critical series with playoff implications. The series against Arizona is especially important given the tight wild card race. Currently in fourth place within the division, the D-backs remain within striking distance, making every matchup a potential swing in postseason positioning. With the Padres boasting a strong home record and a 23-17 mark in their last 40 games, maintaining a sharp bullpen is vital. Beyond just numbers, these moves reflect a broader strategy. The Padres have continued to rely on internal talent and rotational bullpen arms to manage workloads and matchups. Reynolds' promotion not only helps cover innings but signals a vote of confidence in his development. He could be called upon in high-leverage situations as the club tries to chip away at the Dodgers' lead. As the season enters a crucial stretch, how San Diego manages its pitching depth could very well determine its path to October.
