In Amritsar, the district-level event was held at Guru Nanak Stadium, where health and family welfare minister Balbir Singh hoisted the national flag. The minister urged citizens to celebrate the national festival with enthusiasm and reignite the spirit of patriotism, brotherhood, and harmony. The parade featured contingents of Punjab Police, a women's platoon, Home Guards, the Children's Police Band, and a strong presence from the NCC — including seven platoons and 214 cadets from the Amritsar NCC group, marching smartly in unison. In Gurdaspur, cabinet minister Hardeep Singh Mundian performed the flag hoisting ceremony during the district-level Independence Day event. Firing between rival gangs rocks Jodhpur
Jodhpur: There was an abrupt surge in incidents of firing in Jodhpur around Independence Day. After an incident on Aug 14 in Paota area, where a bullet shot by an unidentified person hit a female student in her elbow, yet another incident of firing amid gang rivalry near Ummed Stadium on Saturday unleashed panic in the city. The firing took place barely a few meters away from the local police post. CCTV footage of the incident has also surfaced, showing members of rival gangs fighting. It is reported that after the physical clash, persons from one gang opened fire on the other. However, nobody was reported hurt in the firing. As soon as information was received, a police team reached the spot and began an investigation. Police officers said they are gathering details by speaking with local residents, while also working to identify the accused with the help of nearby CCTV cameras. SHO (Udai Mandir) Sitaram Khoja said the firing was due to gang rivalry and was aimed at threatening the other gang. "We have registered a case and initiated investigation," Khoja said. The two gangs involved have been identified as the Tantiya gang and the NCR gang. The firing is said to have been carried out by the members of the NCR gang.
