Looking for Adventure? Here's Why the Dominican Republic Should Be Your Next Trip

Refinery293 days ago
With Bad Bunny's 'No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí' residency, it seems like everyone is in Puerto Rico this summer. According to Expedia, more than 600,000 people are expected to attend the residency, which runs until September 14, spiking international flights to Pe Erre by 70%. But if you didn't snag tickets and are still hoping to have a Caribbean summer getaway, Expedia recommends its neighboring island: Dominican Republic.
This month, the global online travel agency launched its first-ever Island Hot List, and the Dominican Republic was the only Latin American country to earn a spot. The list is based on a comprehensive analysis of travel data, accommodation rates, accessibility, air connectivity, weather, inclusivity, and traveler reviews. And along with DR, islands like Aruba, Bali, Fiji, Jamaica, Koh Samui, Maldives, Oahu, Paros, and Sardinia all made the cut.
Each destination on the Island Hot List is suggested to offer a specific escape. For instance, Paros is recommended for groups that want to party, Maldives is for the romantics, and Bali is for those who crave relaxation. DR won out for adventure — and as a puertorriqueña who has spent some really enjoyable times in my neighboring Caribbean country, I can understand why.
If you're considering a summer trip to la República Dominicana — or want to wait to visit during the springtime, when Expedia suggests — here's a list of activities I've tried (and others that remain on my to-do list) to consider adding to your own itinerary.
Dive Into Damajagua Waterfalls
Just outside Puerto Plata, the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua are one of the Dominican Republic's most exhilarating natural experiences. After a moderate hike through the jungle, adventurers reach a series of limestone cascades and pools. From there, it's all about sliding, swimming, and leaping (some jumps reach up to 25 feet) into cool water carved into the rock over centuries.
Try Canyoning at Salto El Limón
In Samaná, canyon through river and rock formations at Salto El Limón. With the relaxing sound of the 170-foot waterfall in the backdrop, guided excursions will help you navigate slippery rocks, descend natural chutes, and cool off in clear pools.
Zipline Over the Anamuya Mountains
In the hills near Punta Cana, the Anamuya mountain range offers a zipline course that soars above a mountainous jungle. With 12 lines and multiple platforms, the ride cuts through treetops with panoramic views and quick hits of adrenaline.
Surf in Cabarete
On the north coast, Cabarete has built a global reputation as a wind and watersport hub. Its warm, shallow bay makes it a great destination for kitesurfing and windsurfing, while nearby Playa Encuentro and Macao Beach draw all the surfers. If you've never tried water sports before, don't be discouraged. You can watch from a distance or train with a professional.
Hike Pico Duarte
For those craving a slower pace and higher elevation, consider Pico Duarte. At more than 10,000 feet, it's the highest peak in the Caribbean. Reaching the summit takes multiple days on foot through pine forests, cloudy valleys, and remote backcountry trails. Along the way, hikers sleep in rustic shelters and wake to misty mountain views that feel worlds away from the island's coastal resorts.
Kayak Through Los Haitises & Whale Watch Samaná Bay
In the northeast, Los Haitises National Park is a labyrinth of mangroves, limestone cliffs, and caves etched with Taíno petroglyphs. Kayaking here offers a view of the area's gorgeous landscape. Just offshore, Samaná Bay becomes a sanctuary for migrating humpback whales between January and March, giving you a rare chance to witness one of nature's great migrations.
Snorkel at Bayahibe & Catalina Island
For coral reefs and clear Caribbean waters, head to Bayahibe and the nearby Catalina Island. Snorkelers and divers will find colorful reefs, underwater caves, and even shipwrecks. The water in this area is calmer than in other parts of the country, making it perfect for slow exploration.
Ride Horses Along the Beach
If the idea of horseback riding at golden hour sounds like a dream, consider beachside tours in Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, where guides take riders through soft sand and coastal trails. It's an easygoing, photo-worthy adventure.
Sometimes, the best adventures happen after hours. And when the sun goes down in Santo Domingo, the historic Zona Colonial turns up. Along this historic neighborhood, rooftop bars, clubs, and open-air cafes fill the cobblestone streets with merengue, bachata, and dembow.

This City Was Just Named the No. 1 Labor Day Weekend Destination in the U.S. by Chase Travel—and It's Famous for Its Beaches and Rainforest

Summer may be winding down, but there's still one major holiday weekend left to savor: Labor Day Weekend. While the official holiday falls on Sept. 1, the long weekend really begins the Friday before on Aug. 29—or even Thursday, Aug. 28, if you've got a little PTO to spare. Now's the time to start booking those fall getaways and mapping out your winter travel plans—but don't pack away the swimsuits and flip-flops just yet. This year's top trending destinations have all the essentials for a final summer escape—sun-soaked beaches, island breezes, and plenty of warm weather. But they also promise something more: the chance to go beyond the resort and immerse yourself in rich culture, history, and local flavor. For Labor Day Weekend, Chase Travel found that San Juan, Puerto Rico; Maui, Hawaii; and Miami are the top three trending destinations. San Juan had a 116 percent year over year growth; some of this can certainly be attributed to Bad Bunny's summer-long residency on the island. "We're seeing the gig-tripping trend really take hold—where travelers build entire getaways around marquee events,' Karen Magee, President of Valerie Wilson Travel, a Chase Travel Group company, told Travel + Leisure. 'In Puerto Rico's case, Labor Day weekend offers the perfect mix: easy nonstop flights from major U.S. cities, great weather, and a major draw like Bad Bunny's concert." Beyond a sensational summer concert opportunity, San Juan offers visitors spectacular food, fine rum, historic architecture, national forests, and of course, spectacular beaches. Miami has seen a 55 percent year over year growth. With no shortage of white sand beaches, clear waters, and year-round warm temperatures, it is no surprise that this southern location is climbing up the ladder as a LDW destination. After a day spent roasting in the sun, Miami's nightlife, vibrant immigrant communities, globally recognized food scene, and burgeoning art scene means there's truly no shortage of ways to spend time when you're not on the shore. Maui, Hawaii has seen a 37 percent year over year growth in popularity. The island has 80 beaches and 120 miles of shoreline, making it the place to go for people looking to spend time with their natural environment. You'll need to make sure you're visiting the island responsibly, but doing so can introduce you to a slower, more relaxing side to the island. Consider going star gazing, snorkeling, and chasing waterfalls to get the full experience. Wherever you go, just don't forget to pack your sunscreen; the sun is still strong in September.

Stock Movers: EXPE, UAA, Sweetgreen

On this episode of Stock Movers: - Expedia (EXPE) are up after the online travel agency reported second-quarter results that beat expectations and raised its full-year forecast. Shares see likely resistance near $218 dating back to 2022's previous record. - Under Armour (UAA) is lower after forecasting worse-than-expected sales and profit for the current quarter, stalling a turnaround plan that was taking hold. The Baltimore, Maryland-based brand said revenue for its second quarter is expected to fall between 6% and 7%. Analysts on average projected a drop of almost 3%. So far this year, the stock had declined almost 20% as of the close on Thursday. - Pinterest (PINS) slumped in premarket trading after the search and discovery company reported adjusted second-quarter earnings that missed expectations. It also gave an Ebitda outlook in the range of $282 million to $302 million, compared with the consensus analyst estimate of $292.4 million. Bloomberg Intelligence highlighted ad-pricing weakness as a headwind to growth. - Sweetgreen (SG) is lower after it slashed its sales guidance after a second straight quarter of disappointing results, highlighting the salad chain's struggles to sell $15 salads to budget-strained diners. CEO Jonathan Neman said the quarter's performance reflected macroeconomic challenges and subdued trends in the industry, particularly in several of the company's biggest urban markets. Sweetgreen is also discontinuing its ripple fries, Neman said, citing the complexity the menu item added to kitchens.

Expedia shares soar on upbeat forecast, US travel rebound

(Reuters) -Shares of Expedia surged more than 17% in premarket trading on Friday, after the online travel agent raised its full-year gross bookings forecast and struck an optimistic tone on the recovery in U.S. travel demand. Expedia is the latest travel company to hint at a rebound in demand, following weakness earlier this year when consumers fretted over the economic impact of President Donald Trump's tariff policies. "Since the beginning of July, we've seen an uptick in overall travel demand, particularly in the U.S.," CEO Ariane Gorin said on the earnings call on Thursday. The company expects 2025 gross bookings to grow between 3% to 5%, up 1 percentage point from its earlier forecast. Morningstar analyst Dan Wasiolek expects bookings growth to accelerate further to 7% in 2026 as demand improves alongside policy visibility. Tariffs had disrupted travel spending, "but it appears prospective U.S. travelers are prepared to book again," said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell. Expedia has also been focusing on simplifying its organizational structure by eliminating roles, streamlining operations and deploying generative AI technology. Its second-quarter margin grew by 190 basis points, surpassing the company's May guidance of a 75- to 100-basis-point increase. The biggest fundamental takeaway is that Expedia's continued strategic focus and tighter expense controls are driving more consistent results, said Baird analyst Michael Bellisario. Expedia also joined industry peers Marriott and Airbnb in noting strong bookings from higher-income consumers while lower-income consumers were more cautious with discretionary spending. Expedia's shares trade at about 12.01 times their forward profit estimates, below the industry median of 14.19. Sign in to access your portfolio
