Hundreds of spectators lined the shores of Georgian Bay on Sunday to catch a glimpse of some of the most extravagant, storied ships.
'We have four tall ships visiting Midland. And tall ships only happen sooner than every three years. So it's a very exciting opportunity for people to come to town and to board a vessel,' said Karen Mealing, manager of culture and tourism for the Town of Midland.
Among the iconic and significantly tall squad was the Empire Sandy. Launched in 1943 and home to Toronto, the 200-foot vessel has a beam of 30 feet and a rig height soaring 116 feet above the water.
The Empire Sandy is powered by a 340-horsepower auxiliary diesel engine.

Docked alongside the shore was the Ernestina-Morrissey, a U.S. vessel built back in 1894. With a homeport in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the boat is 156 feet in length and has a draft of 12 feet.
Also turning heads in Midland was the Circe of Toronto, a Canadian ship home to Parry Sound. Built in 1966, the vessel measures 65 feet in sparred length.
This tall vessel is powered by a 220-horsepower Cummins diesel engine.
Last but certainly not least was the St. Lawrence II, with its homeport back in Kingston. This ship launched in 1953 with a rig height soaring 57 feet above the water.

'The amazing thing about sailing is that you're just harnessing the power of the wind. Which is absolutely beautiful. And you're really just, like, understanding nature. And staying connected with that. And then through using nature, you are also able to go see more places. We get to go to islands, for example, that humans have not really touched at all,' said Bridget Cia, senior watch officer of the St. Lawrence II to CTV News.
Aside from admiring the tall ships, people also had the opportunity to step aboard for deck tours and even join an evening sail-out. The waterfront was alive with music, entertainment, and local vendors surrounding the Midland Harbour.

Dog and cat stunt show wows crowd in Cambridge

A dog and a cat share a bicycle at an Ultimutts Stunt Dog Show appearance in Cambridge, Ont. on Aug. 20, 2025. (Dan Lauckner/CTV News) From skateboard tricks to scooter rides, a group of talented dogs and cats put on a show for a crowd in Cambridge on Wednesday. Ultimutts Stunt Dog Show appeared in Preston's Central Park as part of Cambridge Summer Live, a free outdoor entertainment series. The group features specially trained animals who can walk on tightropes, perform handstands and even slam dunk a basketball. Some of them have been featured in movies and television shows, such as Pet Sematary and Titans. 'Most of our 4-legged stars were rescued as unwanted pets, five of the stars are disabled superstars! They are now very loved, live in our homes and sleep in our beds!' the Ultimutts' website reads. 'There are three deaf dogs and one deaf cat,' Melissa Millett, Ultimutts founder and head trainer, told CTV News. 'I started this when I started my dog training school, completely by accident. We wanted to promote the school, we did a show to promote the school and an agent called on the first day.' (Dan Lauckner/CTV News) They say the animals are trained exclusively with positive reinforcement and love 'the mental stimulation of having a job.' Although their performance in Cambridge has wrapped up, they have a full schedule through the rest of the summer and fall. They'll be appearing at Toronto's International Buskerfest from Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 and they'll be back in our area of the Ancaster Fair from Sept. 19 until Sept. 21 and the Rockton Fair on Oct. 12.

‘A tricky situation': SaskTel steps back as title sponsor of the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival

For the first time in nearly 30 years, SaskTel won't be attached to the name of the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. The Crown corporation has held naming rights since 1998, part of a sponsorship package of $150,000 a year. ADVERTISEMENT Shannon Josdal, executive director of the festival, said organizers are busy searching for a new title sponsor and developing new branding. 'It puts us in a tricky situation, and it's a vulnerable situation,' Josdal said. 'We're the 10th jazz festival in Canada to have lost our title sponsor in about the last two years or so. This is something that's been endemic to the industry.' Josdal said there's no bad blood with SaskTel, pointing to the company's ongoing support over the decades. In an email to CTV News, SaskTel said it will still be involved in the festival, just at a smaller scale. 'This change is in no way a reflection of the quality or impact of the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival, which we continue to respect and admire,' SaskTel said. By backing off as title sponsor, SaskTel said it's better positioned to 'develop sponsorship agreements with other organizations and consider supporting new events and causes across Saskatchewan.'
