
Uber wins court battle over downtown Vancouver pickup and dropoff fees
Uber Canada took the city to court over the bylaw, claiming it overstepped a municipal government's power to regulate so-called 'transportation network services.'
The bylaw prevented ride-share vehicles from picking up or dropping off passengers in the 'Metro Vancouver core' between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. unless they had a 'congestion and curbside management permit.'

Under the permit, the city levies a per-stop fee in the downtown core during the designated times. Since December 2003, that fee has been $0.25 for zero-emission vehicles and $0.50 for all other vehicles.
The provincial government made the Passenger Transportation Board the 'centralized authority' to regulate ride-hailing in 2019, but the city later imposed the bylaw, which Uber challenged in B.C. Supreme Court.

The court decision says the province made the changes to eliminate regulatory overlap, which the transportation minister at the time said had 'plagued the passenger-directed vehicle industry for years.'
The ruling says there is no 'rational pathway' for the city to claim it didn't intend to regulate the number of ride-sharing vehicles operating in Vancouver with the bylaw because its stated intention was to reduce traffic congestion.
'Given the specifics of this particular bylaw, it is unreasonable for the city to decide it was authorized to invoke its powers to regulate stopping on city streets to defeat the purpose and text of its governing legislation,' the ruling says. 'Therefore, the bylaw is invalid and the decision to adopt it was unreasonable.'

Stock markets could rally Wednesday amid optimism for future rate cuts
Wall Street is pointed toward new heights before the opening bell Wednesday after new U.S. inflation data raised hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut its benchmark interest rate next month. Air Canada flight attendants issue strike notice, as company plans lockout
The union representing Air Canada flight attendants says they've served the company with a 72-hour strike notice, while advising members the airline has issued its own plan to lockout employees early Saturday morning. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Air Canada component announced the move to members shortly after midnight Wednesday, saying the strike notice had been issued at 12:58 a.m. Eastern daylight time. 'This decision was not made lightly, but it is necessary,' the union wrote in a bargaining update. 'We are ready. We are strong and we will not back down.' Doug Ford teases new details of Ontario's $5B tariff response plan
Ontario Premier Doug Ford's government appears poised to announce details of how it will bail out tariff-hit businesses as opposition politicians demand a cohesive and urgent plan. On Wednesday morning, Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy is scheduled to hold a news conference alongside Vic Fedeli, the trade minister. At an unrelated event the day before, Ford appeared to tease details of what the pair would unveil. 'We're releasing another $5 billion. I think we're going to start a billion tomorrow and then just keep adding,' the premier said in Windsor, Ont. 'We're going to focus on helping small businesses, we're going to really focus on the auto sector and the steel sector, they're the ones that are really getting hit the hardest. So we're rolling out the money — and I won't hesitate to keep rolling it out.' It would include 'up to $1 billion in immediate liquidity relief aimed at protecting Ontario businesses and workers facing significant tariff-related business disruptions,' the budget said. Officials described it as 'an emergency backstop for Ontario businesses that have exhausted available funding.' Despite announcing the fund as part of its budget in May, the government has provided few details of how it will work and whether it has been used, even as tariffs bite. United States President Donald Trump has had levies in place for some time on Canadian steel and aluminum, also adding 35 per cent tariffs on all goods not covered by a trade deal between the two countries at the beginning of August. Opposition politicians said the Ford government was taking too long to stimulate the economy. 'Our economy is already taking a big hit with Trump's most recent tariff hike on all Canadian goods to 35 per cent,' NDP MPP Catherine Fife said in a statement.
