Al-Azhar grand imam accepts invitation to visit Lebanon, vows to reopen Beirut institute - Foreign Affairs
El-Tayyeb received Aoun and a delegation at Al-Azhar's headquarters in Cairo, where he pledged to visit 'at the earliest opportunity,' according to a statement released by the institution.
He also committed to reviving the Al-Azhar Institute in Beirut, promising to send qualified envoys and supply educational resources and curricula.
'Lebanon resides in the heart of every Arab and every Muslim,' the grand imam said, describing the country as a symbol of coexistence and diversity.
President Aoun, currently on an official visit to Cairo, said he was 'honoured' to visit Al-Azhar for the first time.
He praised El-Tayyeb's efforts in advancing interfaith dialogue and combatting extremism.
He also thanked Al-Azhar for its longstanding support of Lebanese students during difficult times.
The meeting also touched on the importance of the Document on Human Fraternity — co-signed by El-Tayyeb and Pope Francis in 2019 — and Al-Azhar's broader efforts to build dialogue between religious and cultural institutions.
Discussions also reaffirmed Al-Azhar's commitment to promoting equal citizenship and rejecting sectarian terms such as 'minorities,' in line with the institution's foundational principles.

CAIRO, Aug 17 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty stressed on Sunday the urgent need to sustain international support for implementing the Arab plan for Gaza's reconstruction, which outlines requirements for early recovery, infrastructure rebuilding, and restoring basic services as a prelude to the enclave's long-term development. Abdelatty made the remarks during his meeting in New Alamein city with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa, in the presence of Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy and Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister Mohamed Ayman Ashour. Abdelatty reviewed preparations for the upcoming Cairo Conference on Gaza Early Recovery and Reconstruction to be convened once a ceasefire is reached, with both sides discussing detailed arrangements for the event. The minister reaffirmed Egypt's unwavering support for the Palestinian people in obtaining their legitimate rights and establishing their independent state, while also updating on Egypt's mediation efforts to secure a ceasefire. He stressed Egypt's categorical rejection of any displacement of Palestinians, denouncing Israel's policy of starvation and blockade in Gaza, as well as its systematic settlement expansion and violations in the occupied territories. The minister underlined Egypt's commitment to supporting the Palestinian Authority (PA) to enable it to assume its responsibilities in both Gaza and the West Bank, highlighting the need to activate a temporary Gaza management committee until the PA fully resumes its role in the Strip. He also voiced Egypt's readiness to help restore order by training Palestinian police forces to fill the security vacuum in Gaza. For her part, Minister Maya Morsy outlined Egypt's humanitarian efforts in Gaza, noting that the Egyptian Red Crescent has facilitated the entry of tens of thousands of aid trucks through the Rafah border crossing carrying hundreds of thousands of tons of relief supplies, alongside dozens of ambulances. Egypt has also treated thousands of injured and ill Palestinians at its hospitals, she added. Meanwhile, Minister Ashour reviewed the executive framework and program documents for the reconstruction plan, emphasizing the importance of ensuring effectiveness and sustainability across infrastructure, services, social protection, economic development, and local governance. He confirmed ongoing coordination with Palestinian counterparts to finalize the plan in its complete form. Egypt joins Geneva negotiations on Global Plastics Treaty, calls for urgent agreement
Egypt's Ministry of Local Development and Environment announced on Sunday that a national delegation, led by Ali Abou Sennah, head of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, participated in the second round of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.2) in Geneva, which is working to draft a legally binding international treaty on plastic pollution, including marine waste. Acting Environment Minister Manal Awad said the negotiations, held from 5 to 15 August, brought together more than 2,600 representatives from 183 member states and 400 observer organisations, including NGOs, waste pickers, and youth groups. She warned that plastic pollution poses an escalating global threat to public health and ecosystems, requiring urgent and collective international action. Awad noted that the Egyptian delegation—which also included representatives from the ministries of foreign affairs and petroleum, along with the Federation of Egyptian Industries—actively supported Egypt's positions across working groups. These discussions covered key issues such as sustainable plastic production, raw materials, and financing mechanisms for the treaty. The session ended with countries agreeing to continue negotiations in a further round, with the ultimate goal of adopting a comprehensive global treaty to end plastic pollution. On the sidelines, Egypt held bilateral talks with officials from Germany, Norway, the United States, Bangladesh, and the United Kingdom. It also participated in regional coordination groups, including the African and Arab blocs, as well as the 'like-minded' coalition, and contributed to the ministerial segment on 12–13 August. Awad underscored the importance of reaching a consensus text to effectively tackle plastic pollution, reaffirming Egypt's commitment to advancing international cooperation for environmental protection and sustainable development.

Egypt, Japan discuss economic ties, preparations for TICAD conference
Egyptian and Japanese officials have discussed strengthening their economic relations and preparations for the upcoming Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), Egypt's planning ministry said. Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, Rania Al-Mashat, met with Japanese Ambassador to Cairo, Fumio Iwai, and the chief representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Egypt, Ebisawa Yu, the ministry said in a statement on Sunday. Al-Mashat praised the economic and development relations between the two countries, which span more than 70 years, and highlighted the elevation of bilateral ties to a strategic partnership during the visit of former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to Egypt in April 2023. The officials discussed various aspects of their cooperation, particularly in sectors prioritised by the Egyptian government, including education, health, human capital investment, and the green economy transition. They also expressed their anticipation for the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in early November and reaffirmed their commitment to completing the fourth phase of the Greater Cairo Metro. With the 9th edition of TICAD scheduled for Aug. 20-22, Al-Mashat emphasized the conference's importance in strengthening African-Japanese relations and creating constructive partnerships to advance development in Africa. She underscored the importance of exploring new opportunities for trilateral economic and investment cooperation between Egypt, Japan, and African countries, particularly in renewable energy. The minister also reaffirmed the government's aspiration to increase investments and participation by the Japanese private sector, JICA, and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to support development financing for the private sector in Egypt. Japan is one of Egypt's most important Asian development partners, with a current cooperation portfolio of about 18 development projects. The total technical support and grants provided by Japan amount to approximately $2.4 billion, in addition to development financing of approximately $7.2 billion in various fields, the ministry said.
