Tropical Storm Wutip: Hong Kong's T1 alert expected to stay in effect most of day

Hong Kong's weather forecaster has said that the No 1 typhoon warning signal will stay in force for most of Thursday, as squally showers associated with a tropical storm near the coast of Guangdong continue to affect the city.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued the signal at 12.40am on Wednesday and said it would assess whether to raise it to No 3 on Friday.
It also said that Tropical Storm Wutip, which is named after a Cantonese word for 'butterfly', was estimated to be about 710km southwest of Hong Kong, expecting it to move northwest at about 10km per hour in the general direction of Hainan Island and intensify gradually at 8am.
'Wutip will make landfall over Hainan Island [on Friday]. Local winds will weaken. According to the present forecast track, Wutip will move across the western part of southern China afterwards, slightly edging closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary,' the Observatory said.

It added that under the influence of an active southerly airstream and upper-air disturbances, there would be occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms over Guangdong early next week.

All schools and government services remain open. All public transport remains in service. The government advice is to take the tropical cyclone into account when planning activities and be wary of potential strong winds over offshore waters. Climate crisis Tropical cyclones – which get their energy from warm ocean water – are strengthening and become ever more destructive because of warming seas. Over 90 per cent of excess heat in the atmosphere is ending up in oceans, according to NASA, as rising greenhouse gases prevent it from escaping to space.

The forecaster said Wutip, which has intensified into a severe tropical storm, took a slightly westward track away from Hong Kong. It will assess the need to issue the Strong Wind Signal Number 3 between Friday night and Saturday morning. As of 8am Friday, the storm was about 720 kilometres southwest of the city. It is forecast to skirt the western part of Hainan Island today, before turning northeast towards inland Guangdong. As it edges closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary over the weekend, winds are expected to gradually strengthen across the territory on Saturday, coupled with occasionally heavy squally showers and swells.

The forecaster said in a special weather warning at 8am on Friday that Severe Tropical Storm Wutip intensified on Thursday night but had taken a slightly westward path away from Hong Kong. 'The standby signal No 1 will remain in force for most of the time [on Friday],' it said. 'The Observatory will assess [between Friday night and Saturday morning] the need for issuing the strong wind signal No 3.' Wutip, which is named after the Cantonese word for 'butterfly', will skirt the western part of Hainan Island on Friday and move towards Beibu Wan to Leizhou Peninsula, maintaining a distance of more than 500km (310 miles) from Hong Kong. But the forecaster said winds were likely to strengthen gradually across the city during the daytime on Friday, later reaching up to gale force levels at higher ground.
