A Talking Horse, Genie, Witch. Who Comes Up With This Goofy Stuff?
The sixties were one of the most creative periods for art in modern American history. Mostly known for innovative music, now called "classic rock," the decade also broke meaningful ground in the areas of dress, pop culture, literature, movies and more. The sixties reminds this journalist of the fertile twenties in American literature with Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck and the like.
What isn't acknowledged much is the outrageous creativity of sixties television comedy series. Think about the goofiness of "Green Acres" (sophisticated New Yorkers moving to a rural farm), "I Dream Of Jeannie" (an astronaut and a genie) and "Mr. Ed" (a man with a talking horse). What minds came up with that stuff, I can't imagine, but there was a refreshing innocence about the shows, and, to this day, many are still in syndication.
I picked out five of the more memorable to look at, listed below in random order.
(1) "I Dream Of Jeannie": With the Cold War space race between the U.S. and former Soviet Union in full swing, this series had some relativity to the time period. It ran for five seasons on NBC, starting in 1965.
Major Anthony Nelson, an astronaut played by Larry Hagman, later to star in 'Dallas,' becomes stranded on a remote island when his reentry capsule meanders off-course. While on the island, he finds a bottle that's washed up on shore. When he uncorks it, out pops actress Barbara Eden, a beautiful genie dressed in Persian garb who helps rescue him and is his willing "slave" going forward.
Her efforts at pleasing him push Nelson into some hysterical situations, often not of his choosing. Particularly funny is that nobody else is aware of her except his astronaut peer, Roger Healy (actor Bill Daily). This endlessly frustrates one of Nelson's superiors, Dr. Bellows, who suspects mischief but can never prove it, and is constantly embarrassed by trying. Hence the line: "He's doing it to me again." That relationship is one the funnier parts of the show, which aired on NBC from 1965 to 1970.

(2) 'Bewitched:" In a similar vein, ad executive Darrin Stephens unknowingly marries a beautiful witch, Samantha, played by actress Elizabeth Montgomery. Samantha tries to be a normal housewife, but her heritage of spells and family witch characters gets in the way, often leading Darrin into unusual situations. Again, nobody else knows she's a witch.
The Bellows fall guy here is Darrin's boss, Larry Tate, who suspects something but can never prove it. Let's see, a secret witch and a secret genie. Can't get more out there than that. "Bewitched' ran on ABC from 1964 to 1972.

(3) 'Mr. Ed:" Well, maybe you can get more out there. Architect Wilbur Post (actor Alan Young) discovers that he has a talking horse named Mr. Ed. Like in the first two series above, nobody hears Ed except Wilbur, who often is heard talking to Ed and then asked by his wife and friends to whom was he just speaking. There is never any explanation as to why the horse could talk or why it was so sophisticated in its syntax. Nevertheless, the series ran for six seasons on CBS beginning in 1961, and today is considered a cult classic.

(4) 'Green Acres:" A rich couple played by actors Eddie Arnold (Oliver Wendell Douglas) and Eva Gabor (Lisa) abruptly leaves their New York penthouse and moves to a poor farm in Hooterville. Being a farmer had always been a dream of Oliver's. He tries hard to cope with the 180-degree shift in lifestyle, but coming to grips with it is difficult, and laugh-out-loud funny. The couple wears their fancy New York clothes while doing farm chores, for example, and are baffled by Mr. Haney, a local hustler who constantly is peddling things the Douglas' don't need, and giving them absurd farm advice. The network was CBS, and the series ran from 1965 to 1971.
HOGANS HEROES. Bob Crane as Col. Robert E. Hogan, left, Werner Klemperer as Col. Wilhelm Klink in The Late Inspector General, June 22, 1965. (Photo by CBS) Getty Images
(5) "Hogan's Heroes:" This one was a little more risqué. It ran six seasons on CBS starting in 1965. The premise: A group of "captured" Allied forces are housed in a WWII German concentration camp, Stalag 13. These prisoners, commanded by American Col. Hogan (actor Bob Crane), don't try to escape, rather secretly help the western movement by feeding allies valuable information they garner in camp. The bumbling German officers in charge, Sgt. Schultz and Col. Klink, are oblivious to what's going on, and that's where the comedy comes in. "Hogan's Heroes" paved the way later for "Mash," a more serious dramady about Korean War doctors.
There were other sixties shows with wacky premises, too. Honorable mentions go to "The Beverly Hillbillies" (a poor family discovers oil on its Texas property and moves to Hollywood), "Gilligan's Island' (a three-day boat tour turns into being stranded on a desert island for years), and "Get Smart" (a spoof on Cold War spy activities).

Welcome to Best of Late Night, a rundown of the previous night's highlights that lets you sleep — and lets us get paid to watch comedy. Here are the 50 best movies on Netflix right now. A Formerly Thankless Job The government said on Friday that the labor market had weakened as employers pulled back on hiring. One news outlet said the numbers were the worst since the pandemic. On Monday, Stephen Colbert said that President Trump had 'taken us back to Covid now.' 'That explains why he's growing sourdough starter around his ankles.' — STEPHEN COLBERT 'When he heard about this employment crisis, Trump sprang into action and fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. No! No, you fool! Now there's one less job! Don't you see? You fell into her trap.' — STEPHEN COLBERT 'But it makes sense. He fires anyone who gives him bad news: 'Mr. Dr. Cardiologist, you clearly rigged my cholesterol to be 1,000 and said my blood type was aioli. You're fired. I happen to know it's honey mustard.'' — STEPHEN COLBERT 'Trump said that he'll announce a new commissioner in the next few days. WWE Raw Results August 4, 2025: 5 Takeaways From Post-SummerSlam Show
The Raw after SummerSlam was like the episode to tie up any loose ends following two epic nights at MetLife Stadium. There were two title matches, but no new champions were crowned. Still, there was a lot uncovered. Here are the five biggest takeaways from Raw after SummerSlam 2025. Seth Rollins Names His Faction and Shows Us He's Healthy Seth Rollins is in excellent physical condition—at least visually—and he worked a pretty physical match against LA Knight in the show's main event to prove it. More on that later, but Rollins also named his faction. He, Paul Heyman, Bron Breakker, and Bronson Reed will be known as The Vision. I'd expect merch to land sometime very soon. The show-opening promo from Heyman and Rollins was stellar, though it was interrupted by a clumsily executed rant from Knight. For a guy whose persona is built on one-liners, he gets tongue-tied an awful lot. In any case, he's still majorly over with the fans, and boy is he underrated as an athlete and in-ring performer. The match was decent, and there is likely more to come between him and Rollins later this Lynch is the Greatest Female Wrestler Ever, It's Official Lynch said it during her mic session on Monday, and as she mentioned, a writer for Sports Illustrated said it: she is the greatest female wrestler of all time. For a while, I held that title for Charlotte, but watching Lynch make the most of every position she's in has pushed The Man to the top of the list for me. Lynch is owning this IC title reign, and she destroyed Nikki Bella on the mic on Monday. We've heard a lot of references to Bella's past relationship with John Cena over the years, but Lynch dropped an absolute nuke that seemed to legitimately get under Nikki's skin. Very rarely will you see a bar dropped that elicits the 'holy s###' chant from fans, but this one deservedly did. Take a look at this video. Lynch is doing her job. She is elevating the women's IC title like Gunther did for the men's version, and that's the other thing that has pushed her to the top of my Addressed Brock Lesnar's Return WWE didn't go into great detail, but Michael Cole did read a statement from WWE CEO Nick Khan and CCO Triple H in which they told fans that they called Brock Lesnar a few weeks ago and told him, 'it's time for you to come home.' As you saw on Sunday night, Lesnar took them up on the offer, and his presence immediately delivered what was arguably the pop of the Lee is Coming Back, the Groundwork is Being Laid Did you catch what Lynch said in her mic work? She said, 'me and my hot husband are the greatest wrestling couple of all time.' Rollins is embroiled in a major feud with CM Punk, who is married to…AJ Lee. There is no way WWE will resist the urge to offer Lee an outrageous amount of money to main event Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, or WrestleMania in a mixed tag-team match with her husband vs. Lynch and Rollins. That match is big enough to main event any WWE show, and I have to believe it is coming over the next six to eight Threat is Upcoming for Clash in Paris Before any of that happens, it seems like we're looking at a Triple Threat match for Clash in Paris. Rollins is seemingly on pace to defend his World Heavyweight title against Knight and Punk. The latter interrupted the main event match, and that usually means all three men will wind up battling soon. It's a cool main event, but it doesn't seem like a match that will see Rollins drop the title. They're pushing the 'Absolute Power' concept for The Vision, and it would be weird to have him drop the title less than 30 days after winning it.

'Shrinking' Star Pens Heartbreaking Tribute to Beloved Family Member: 'Trying to Fill the Crater He Left'
'Shrinking' Star Pens Heartbreaking Tribute to Beloved Family Member: 'Trying to Fill the Crater He Left' originally appeared on Parade. Shrinking star Ted McGinley wrote an absolutely gut-wrenching post on Monday, August 4, about losing beloved family member Fiddy, his beautiful dog. It is especially poignant because McGinley and his wife Gigi Rice were displaced from their home in the Palisades fire earlier this year, and their pup won't get to return. "Just recently, I posted something about two buddies dreaming of getting back into their home after the Palisades Fire…One of us…Never will :( We lost him Sat Morning. How can something so tiny be so huge. Trying to fill the crater he left us. If you know…you know. Ouch. Best friends…just not forever." The other post the actor is referring to is from July 3, when he posted a photo of himself with Fiddy in their backyard and wrote, "After the Palisades Fire…two buddies return to lay on the warm stones in their back yard. My Co-Mayor of the Palisades, wife Gigi Rice and I wish you a happy 4th of July. (Early). Good to dream about being home again someday."In the comments announcing Fiddy's death, McGinley's Shrinking co-star Michael Urie wrote, "Love you, Ted," and the show's costume designer Allyson B. Fanger wrote, "Omg TEDDDDDDD so sorry FIDDY and you will forever be together in your hearts ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ so sorry he was v special and v loved . He had a good life❤️😇🐾🌈✨sending love 💔." Shrinking writer Ashley Nicole Black added, "I'm so sorry, Ted. Sending love." Chef Sloan Rinaldi wrote, "God bless his soul🐾🙏🏻🐾. It's just never long enough. The most unconditional love. 🐾❤️🐾." And one fan added, "So sorry to see this 😢 Glad we get the time and memories w/ them, but our #furbabies always seem to go too quickly 💔."On January 9, McGinley and Extra host Billy Bush took a video of the devastation in the Palisades when they went together back to McGinley's home to try to salvage his wife's artwork. Gigi Rice is a former actress who is now a painter; according to her website, she opened a gallery with her friend Alice Hernandez-Gaona in 2014. McGinley has starred on such iconic TV shows as Dynasty, Hope and Faith, Married With Children and most recently Shrinking. Shrinking returns later this year for its third season on AppleTV+; it co-stars Harrison Ford, Jason Segel, Christa Miller, Jessica Williams and it has added the legendary in a "major" role for the third season. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 'Shrinking' Star Pens Heartbreaking Tribute to Beloved Family Member: 'Trying to Fill the Crater He Left' first appeared on Parade on Aug 5, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Aug 5, 2025, where it first appeared.
