Scots easyJet boss sacked for "comments about crew members' bodies"

Amanda Gallagher, an easyJet manager based in Glasgow, gave evidence at the Edinburgh Employment Tribunal on Tuesday, June 17.
A Scots easyJet boss fired a cabin manager who showed "repeated conduct" issues involving comments about crew members' bodies, a court has heard.
Amanda Gallagher, an easyJet manager based in Glasgow, gave evidence at the Edinburgh Employment Tribunal on Tuesday, June 17. As reported by Edinburgh Live, Ms Gallagher said that she terminated Ross Barr's employment for "gross misconduct".

Former cabin manager Barr, 48, is suing the airline for unfair dismissal and sexual orientation discrimination, alleging he was told he couldn't "make the same announcements as a gay colleague" over aircraft PA systems. He outlined on Monday accusations made against him by customers and crew members, such as making inappropriate jokes at work.

On Tuesday the court heard Ms Gallagher was present during Mr Barr's various disciplinary hearings. She also made the ultimate decision to terminate his employment.
Ms Gallagher addressed a customer complaint where Mr Barr was allegedly walking behind a female colleague and said "I'm not doing anything, just staring at your a**". Ms Gallagher had spoken with Mr Barr following the incident and told the court: "He said it was banter but didn't understand there was no need to be referencing someone's backside."
Mr Barr recalled using the word "bum" and also refuted that he referred to his comments as "banter".
The court also heard that Mr Barr once brushed past a female colleague in close quarters on an aircraft and said something to the effect of "I just brushed past your boobs". Ms Gallagher felt Mr Barr's conduct was not "professional in front of customers and other crew" especially when referring to "more sensitive areas".
Employment solicitor Jenni Darling, representing easyJet, brought up a separate incident where Mr Barr allegedly told a crew member to stow an extra seatbelt in storage. Ms Gallagher claimed he told the member of staff to "Stuff it in - I bet you've never had that problem".

On her decision to fire Mr Barr, she referred to both staff and customer complaints against the cabin manager. Ms Gallagher shared: "There was similar conduct from the past and it hadn't been rectified" and "Given that it was repeated behaviour, it was gross misconduct and it was termination of Mr Barr's employment."
Mr Gallagher also posed that Mr Barr presented a safety threat. She said: "A cabin manager is in a position of trust on board an aircraft [but] crew might not feel comfortable coming to you. If there is sexual conduct [and] if you have to complete safety-related duties in proximity to Mr Barr, [crew] might not complete those safety duties."

While giving evidence on Monday Mr Barr claimed conversations that took place in the rear of the aircraft were "quite personal" and "of a sexual nature". Ms Gallagher asserted on Tuesday that if such conversations were taking place in the cabin, she would expect it to be reported. She added: "There is no soundproof wall" on the plane and "customers can hear everything being said."
Mr Barr further told the court that his termination related to his public announcements (PAs), but Ms Gallagher claimed his PAs had "very little" to do with his termination. Instead, she stated, it was due to his "conduct".
She added: "It's around conduct and what we believe is right onboard. The fact a customer wrote in with a concern is not good for the brand of easyJet."
The hearing is presided over by Employment Judge Muriel Robison. The tribunal continues.

Six severed heads dumped on road on busy street alongside chilling warning

Six severed heads have been dumped on a roadside in central Mexico - sparking terror in a region normally untouched by cartel violence. Six severed heads have been discovered on a road in central Mexico, sparking a major police investigation. ‌ ‌ The route where the remains were found connects the central states of Puebla and Tlaxcala. Police have yet to reveal a motive behind the killings or name the gangs who may have carried out the horror. ‌ A blanket was left at the scene with a chilling warning to rival gangs, according to local media. It was reportedly signed by a group calling itself La Barredora, which translates as "The Sweeper". 'La Barredora' happens to be the name of a little-known criminal gang that operates in the western state of Guerrero, however, there's no clarity on whether the cartel was behind the attack or their motive. The Tlaxcala Prosecutor's Office confirmed the victims were men and has launched a full investigation. Federal authorities are yet to comment. The shocking discovery comes in a region usually associated with fuel smuggling - known locally as 'huachicoleo' - a multi-billion dollar racket run by organised crime. It also follows a huge crackdown on fentanyl trafficking launched by President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration. Unlike states ravaged by cartel violence, Puebla and Tlaxcala, just over 100km from Mexico City, are seen as relatively peaceful. ‌ Tlaxcala accounts for just 0.5% of the 14,769 intentional homicides recorded nationwide between January and July, while Puebla makes up 3.4%. But both states have problems with gangs moving drugs, people and stolen fuel due to their central location. In 2022, Puebla authorities found 116 migrants crammed inside a truck. ‌ Elsewhere, in June this year, 20 men were found dead with gunshot wounds in cartel-ravaged Sinaloa, five of them decapitated. And in May, a gun attack at a Catholic festival in Guanajuato left seven young people dead. Meanwhile, in May, a shooting at a Catholic Church festival in the central state of Guanajuato resulted in the deaths of seven Mexican youths. Mexico has been gripped by soaring cartel violence since 2006, when the government first sent in the military. Hundreds of thousands have been killed and tens of thousands remain missing. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Former Police Scotland officer Anthony Capon has passed away The ex-officer, known as Tony, joined Fife Constabulary when he was 17 years old. Divisional Commander of the Fife Division of Police Scotland, Chief Superintendent Derek McEwan, hailed his ex-colleague's "good humour and warmth". In a touching tribute, he said: "As you will all be aware, on Thursday 7th August a dear friend and colleague, Anthony (Tony) Capon, tragically passed away having taken ill at home and suffering a fall. "Tony was only 53 years old and had only retired from Police Scotland a matter of weeks ago. "Having spent time with Tony on the day of his retiral, it was clear that Tony had so many plans for the future and much to look forward to, not least becoming a Grandfather in November for the first time. "Tony joined Fife Constabulary as a 17-year-old, working within the garage at the then HQ in Dysart before moving up to Glenrothes. "Since then, literally every police officer and staff member within Fife would, at some point, have had the opportunity to meet Tony and to have enjoyed his good humour and warmth while also benefitting from his obliging nature and dedication to his role. "His contribution to our service cannot be underestimated. "He would do all he could to help officers and staff to make their lives as easy as possible and to make sure we were able to provide the best service we could to the public. "Tony was universally popular and was one of those individuals whom I have genuinely never heard a bad word said about. Scots hood Ross 'Miami' McGill ran designer side hustle with drug-dealing Mr Scotland bodybuilder "I first met Tony in the early 1990s and when we bid our farewells on his last day in policing, he hadn't changed that much. Just as funny, caring and interested in others and even still offering to help if he could. "He was a gentleman who could make you laugh and feel positive. "When the command team met with Tony, it was so clear how proud he was of his two children. "I hope that they realise how special their dad was to thousands of police officers and staff who were fortunate enough to have spent some time in his company. "Since Tony's tragic passing, we have maintained contact with Tony's family and are in discussions as to how the service can best pay our respect for him on the day of his funeral." Tony is survived by his daughter Rebecca and son Daniel. His funeral will take place at 11.45am on August 27 at Kirkcaldy Crematorium. All friends and former colleagues are welcome to attend. CS McEwan added: "Very few people carry the level of respect which Tony did. For that his children, and all who loved and cared for him, should be so proud. "Rest in Peace Tony, and thanks for everything you did for us all." Hundreds of members of the public have also paid their respects to Mr Capon. One commented: "I honestly can't speak highly enough of Tony. He was such a great person and would do anything to help anybody. Sending love to his family." Another said: "Met him a couple of times, a gentleman. RIP Tony, thoughts with all family & friends." A third wrote: "RIP Tony. A gentleman taken far too soon."

Scots pensioner dies on cruise ship docked in Italian city

The 83-year-old was allegedly discovered lifeless in the water on Tuesday afternoon. A Scots OAP has died on board a cruise ship after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool while it was docked in Naples. ‌ The 83-year-old, who has not yet been named, was discovered in the pool of the Marella Voyager yesterday afternoon. Holidaymakers and crew desperately tried to save him but he could not be revived. ‌ Italian police boarded the vessel, placing it under temporary seizure as they carried out inquiries. The ship - which is operatured by TUI - was due to leave port at 5pm local time but was held back for several hours. ‌ Officers later ruled out any foul play, confirming the pensioner had taken ill in the water. The liner was eventually cleared to resume its journey around the Med. The Marella Voyager had set sail from Majorca on August 16 and had already visited Sardinia before arriving in Naples. It is now continuing on to Rome, Corsica, Spain and back to Majorca. An FCDO Spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Italy." TUI has been contacted for comment.
