ED Raids 6 Sites In Hyderabad Over Rs 621 Crore Scam Linked To Highway Project

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday conducted searches across six locations in Hyderabad in connection with a Rs 621-crore bank-fraud case against the promoters and directors of a company and its associate firms. The investigation was based on an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against SEW LSY Highways Limited and others for allegedly siphoning off loan funds, cheating, and criminal misconduct, resulting in the loss of public money, the probe agency said in a statement. The raids targeted SEW Infrastructure Limited (SIL), Prasad & Company (Project Works) Private Limited (PSPWPL), their group firms, and directors, the ED said. SEW LSY Highways Limited was incorporated as a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the execution of a highway project assigned by the Uttar Pradesh State Highway Authority to a consortium of SIL and PSPWPL. The project was backed by a Rs 1,700-crore term loan from a consortium of 14 banks led by Punjab National Bank, of which Rs 603.68 crore was disbursed. The ED's probe revealed a complex scheme of intra-group sub-contracting where work was passed on at successively lower values, primarily through SEW Transport Networks Ltd (STNL) and then to PSPWPL. It alleged that part of the loan funds was diverted to PSPWPL, which then infused these funds back as the promoters' contribution, violating loan conditions. "However, the project was not completed and the term loan became a non-performing asset, resulting in an outstanding amount of Rs 621.78 crore to the banks," the ED said. Additionally, 33 bank accounts belonging to SEW Infrastructure Limited, as well as their directors and relatives were frozen during the search operations. SEW Infrastructure Ltd. was founded in 1983 by Vallurupalli Nageswara Rao and is based in Hyderabad.

ED conducts midnight searches at‘ illegal' call centres in Tricity

The Chandigarh Zonal Office (CDZO-I) of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out searches at what it described as illegal call centres, which were accused of duping foreign nationals, across the Tricity on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. According to the agency, these companies operated by setting up overseas entities to receive fraudulent funds via payment gateways, which were then funnelled back to India through banking channels and hawala. On their websites, the firms claimed to offer software support services, including web designing and fixed wireless internet, but provided no details of promoters, directors, or team members. 'The entire business was run clandestinely. Even employees lacked proficiency in software or BPO operations,' an ED official said. One such firm allegedly ran a fake call centre under the name Bios Tech, USA, falsely claiming to offer support for Microsoft, HP, routers and other hardware. The directors failed to produce any agreements or certifications authorising them or their affiliates to provide technical support for these brands. The investigation agency found the Indian company was monitoring Bios Tech's backend and controlling its finances. The US entity was also operated by Indian nationals, with its director listed as a close associate of the Indian promoters. Analysis of seized call transcripts confirmed the operation of tech-fraud schemes. The IP address of the Indian firm's website also hosted a spoof site of Geek Squad, a well-known US tech firm. The ED alleged the directors were engaged in such spoofing without obtaining proper licences. Two other firms were also found to have been involved in similar fraudulent activities since 2016, according to the agency. One such firm purportedly offered tech support to CTS Mobility, a US company owned by a close relative of the Indian operators. The ED cited emails and WhatsApp chats that revealed the creation and use of fake Microsoft pop-up call links and fraudulent payments made by misusing foreign customers' credit cards for non-existent services. The websites of these companies advertised services like mobile device management, network and device support, and Device as a Service (DaaS), yet lacked promoter details. 'Office images posted online portrayed facilities akin to major IT parks, 'a far cry from reality',' the ED said.

Shikohpur land deal involving Robert Vadra classic case of money laundering: ED to Delhi court

The proviso to Section 223 (1) provides "no cognisance of an offence shall be taken by the magistrate without giving the accused an opportunity of being heard". Live Events On July 17, the ED filed a chargesheet, naming Vadra, in the case. "It is a clear and classic case of money laundering. Proceeds of crime were used to acquire immovable properties. Evidence conclusively establishes that there is the offence of money laundering where proceeds of crime are generated, layered, and enjoyed," the ED argued. The agency was represented by special counsel Zoheb Hosain, special public prosecutor Naveen Kumar Matta and advocate Mohammad Faizan. Hosain said the court had jurisdiction to try the matter as part of the activity related to the proceeds of crime took place in the national capital. The ED counsel alleged that Skylight Hospitality, whose 99 per cent shares are held by Vadra, purchased three acres of land worth crores. "There were false declarations in the sale deed that Rs 7.5 crore had been paid when no money was paid. It was paid later to avoid stamp duty," Hosain said. He claimed that this land was later sold to DLF for a higher amount. The court has posted the matter for clarification and its order on issuing notice to July 31. A total of 11 entities including Vadra, a firm linked to him named Sky Light Hospitality Pvt. Ltd., Satyanand Yajee and Kewal Singh Virk, their company Onkareshwar Properties Pvt. Ltd. and some others have been named as accused in the case. The money laundering case stems from a September 2018 FIR of Gurugram Police which alleged fraudulent purchase of 3.53 acre of land situated in village Shikohpur in Sector 83 (Gurugram) by Vadra, through his entity SkyLight Hospitality Pvt. Ltd., from Onkareshwar Properties Pvt Ltd on February 12, 2008, through a "false" declaration at a cost of Rs 7.5 crore. A Congress government led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda was in power at that time. Four years later, in September 2012, the company (Sky Light) sold the land to realty major DLF for Rs 58 crore. The land deal got embroiled in controversy in October 2012 after IAS officer Ashok Khemka, then posted as the director general of Land Consolidation and Land Records-cum-Inspector-General of Registration of Haryana, cancelled the mutation of this categorising the transaction as violative of state consolidation act and some related procedures.
