Paterson, N.J. remains under a boil water advisory after massive water main break

CBS News11-08-2025
Paterson, N.J. Mayor Andre Sayegh and Jim Mueller, the executive director of of the Passaic Valley Water Commission, are expected to give an update Monday on the massive water main break in Paterson that left the entire city under a boil water advisory, impacting more than 185,000 people.
The advisory covers all of Paterson, as well as Prospect Park, Haledon and North Haledon. Under the advisory, impacted residents should boil water for at least a minute before using it for drinking, preparing foods, mixing baby formula, washing produce, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and washing dishes.
Monday's update comes after Friday's break, when a 30-inch pipe ruptured near Hinchliffe Stadium, leaving area businesses and residents with little or no water pressure.
Efforts to repair the main continued throughout the weekend. On Saturday, Paterson opened a comfort zone at John F. Kennedy with portable bathrooms. Sunday, shower trailers were added. Free water was also being distributed in multiple locations.
They were hoping to complete repairs by Monday. Even after repairs are made, the boil advisory may remain in effect for several days while the system is tested out.
So far there's no word on the cause of the break.

Hollie Strano, former WKYC TV meteorologist, gets new gig in Stark County

Hollie Strano, the former WKYC Channel 3 TV meteorologist, has landed a new gig in Stark County. Strano, who was fired last year after 22 years with the station, will now bring Mix 94.1 radio listeners the weather each morning. "Hollie Strano is an Emmy-winning mental health advocate, seasoned television professional, and nationally recognized public figure with over two decades of on-air experience," according to a post on the Canton station's website. "A trusted meteorologist and the creator of Abruptly Authentic — streaming on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts — she blends science, storytelling, and soul to deliver impactful forecasts and fearless conversations across the country." Related reporting: 'I love me, finally': Hollie Strano shares her recovery story, offers hope to others "Let's do this Stark County!" Strano said on Facebook. "So much love for you, Canton! Thank you for having me!" Strano will forecast Monday-Sunday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. A message was left Aug. 18 with Mix 94.1 requesting comment on Strano's hiring. Why did Hollie Strano lose her position at WKYC? The station announced Strano's firing in September 2024, around nine months after she was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence in November 2023. She later pleaded guilty to the charge. "I am sad to share that after 22 plus years of dedicated work, WKYC and Tegna decided to terminate my employment after I shared my recovery journey publicly," she posted following her termination. "I believe the actions of WKYC and Tegna demonstrate the stigma surrounding addiction that so many in our community experience every day." Related reporting: WKYC denies allegations made by former meteorologist Hollie Strano in civil case Shortly after she was fired, Strano filed a lawsuit against her former company, claiming she was terminated for sharing her alcoholism recovery journey on social media as well as promoting a product. "What an honor it is to be bringing you the forecast each day, from my hometown in Cleveland to your radios down South!" she said in a Facebook post. "Grateful for the opportunity, and excited for what's ahead." She also hosts the "Abruptly Authentic with Hollie Strano" podcast on Youtube. The Akron Beacon Journal contributed to this report. Building collapses in West Englewood on Loomis Boulevard

A building collapsed in Chicago's West Englewood neighborhood following a stormy weekend, but without an apparent known cause. Video from CBS Skywatch shows a large part of the building, which appears to have been an abandoned home, caved in on itself Monday morning. The building is located on Loomis Boulevard between Marquette Road and 68th Street. According to the Chicago Fire Department, the building was vacant, and no one was hurt in the collapse. What caused the building to collapse is still under investigation. The Chicago Department of Buildings released a statement, writing, "DOB inspectors responded this morning and are still on-site alongside demolition contractors assessing the building's current status. They are joined by Com-Ed and People's Gas, as their teams disconnect their respective utilities to prepare for a total demolition of 6725 S. Loomis. Though the cause of the collapse is unknown at this time, DOB is thankful to our first responders for their swift action and remain grateful no one was harmed in this incident."
