BERA: Trapped in the surging waters, a mother managed to hand her 16-month-old daughter to her husband just moments before she was swept away by the strong currents after their car plunged into Sungai Triang earlier today. Housewife Sakirah Akop, 31, showed extraordinary love and courage when the Perodua Bezza she was in with her daughter suddenly rolled down a riverbank and into Sungai Triang near the Kerayong wet market around 1.45pm. Prior to the incident, Sakirah and her daughter had accompanied her husband, a 32-year-old army personnel, on a fishing trip by the river. Bera district police chief Superintendent Zulkiflee Nazir said the family had arrived at the riverbank at around 1.30pm. "About 15 minutes later, the car suddenly rolled forward and plunged into the river. "Before the vehicle was fully submerged, Sakirah managed to hand the girl to her husband. "Moments later, she was swept away by the strong currents and is feared drowned," he said in a statement today. Zulkiflee said the Bera police station was alerted at 1.50pm, and search and rescue (SAR) operations began around 2.15pm. He said Fire and Rescue Department divers from the Bukit Angin Water Rescue Unit in Temerloh conducted dives at a depth of six metres to find the victim.
