Guwahati: A spell of moderate rain of 7.8 mm brought much needed relief to the city on Monday afternoon, breaking an intense heatwave that made lives of residents miserable in the past weeks.
The rainfall, which began around 2.30 pm, lasted throughout the rest of the day, providing respite from the relentless heat and humidity as temperature dipped noticeably.
Prior to this, the city had been experiencing sweltering conditions under clear skies, with hot winds aggravating the discomfort. The city earlier touched a scorching 38.4 degrees Celsius, matching its highest July temperature record, which was last witnessed on July 18, 2017.
As per the latest seven-day forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department, the city can expect generally cloudy skies with rain or thunder showers till Sunday.
Although the rain offered much-needed respite by breaking the intense heat and noticeably improving the city's air quality, it also revived familiar troubles. Several areas across Guwahati, including Beltola Survey, Rukminigaon, Rajgarh, Nabin Nagar and adjoining localities, faced significant waterlogging.

At many places, roads were submerged, forcing citizens to navigate cautiously through murky water.
"It is a daily story for the city. Whenever it rains, our lives comes to a sudden halt due to the lack of proper planning and equipment needed to flush out the water," said Mriganka Shil, a resident of Beltola.
In Jorabat, on the outskirts of the city, the situation turned grim as the entire area came under water. This led to severe disruptions in vehicular movement.

1 lakh silt catch pits mapped; to be cleaned by July 31

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has mapped one lakh silt catch pits that trap and collect solid debris, sediments, and other pollutants from runoff rain water before they enter the drains, and is geo-tagging each pit after it is cleaned. More than 67,000 pits were cleared in the past few days, and the remaining be completed by the end of this month, officials said. To complete the process before the onset of monsoon, the civic body has procured additional vehicles and deployed workers in two shifts. "Cleaning silt catch pits will prevent inundation during monsoon. Plastic waste and sludge clogged the pits stop excess rainwater from draining. This leads to waterlogging on the roads," said GCC Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran. Depression moves away, rain likely to ease today

1 2 Kolkata: Dark clouds from a depression spread across the city have been causing intermittent rain since Sunday night. The city has been under its spell throughout Monday and the Met office has not ruled out some intense spells until Tuesday morning. After that, the intensity will decrease, with the depression moving away towards Jharkhand. However, some western districts are expected to be lashed by heavy rain on Tuesday. A low-pressure area formed over Southeast Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh turned into a depression on Monday. On Monday evening, the first depression of this monsoon was positioned 90 km north of Kolkata and 50 km east of Burdwan. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Alipore recorded a rain amount of 7.9 mm in the past 24 hours. The frequent rain spell, along with cloud cover, caused the maximum temperature to plunge 4.4 notches below the normal at 28.4 degrees. "This system is expected to move over to Jharkhand by Tuesday. Hence, most of the rainfall activity in the city will happen till Tuesday morning. But even if the rain intensity and frequency decrease once the system moves away, the city will continue to have a cloud cover and a few spells of rain," said meteorologist H R Biswas, the head of the weather forecast section at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Kolkata. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo While the spells of rain in Kolkata were intermittent, the city was spared heavy rain on Monday. However, pockets in some districts like North 24 Parganas and Nadia received heavy rain during the day. "This depression is well-structured but not very strong as it is being fed by mixed wind systems. The monsoon flow is normal with the trough in a normal position. While we can expect rain intensity to decrease by Tuesday afternoon, some western districts could get heavy spells while the depression moves towards the west-north-west," said RMC Kolkata Meteorologist Sourish Bandyopadhyay.
