Guwahati: A spell of moderate rain of 7.8 mm brought much needed relief to the city on Monday afternoon, breaking an intense heatwave that made lives of residents miserable in the past weeks.
The rainfall, which began around 2.30 pm, lasted throughout the rest of the day, providing respite from the relentless heat and humidity as temperature dipped noticeably.
Prior to this, the city had been experiencing sweltering conditions under clear skies, with hot winds aggravating the discomfort. The city earlier touched a scorching 38.4 degrees Celsius, matching its highest July temperature record, which was last witnessed on July 18, 2017.
As per the latest seven-day forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department, the city can expect generally cloudy skies with rain or thunder showers till Sunday.
Although the rain offered much-needed respite by breaking the intense heat and noticeably improving the city's air quality, it also revived familiar troubles. Several areas across Guwahati, including Beltola Survey, Rukminigaon, Rajgarh, Nabin Nagar and adjoining localities, faced significant waterlogging.

"It is a daily story for the city. Whenever it rains, our lives comes to a sudden halt due to the lack of proper planning and equipment needed to flush out the water," said Mriganka Shil, a resident of Beltola.
In Jorabat, on the outskirts of the city, the situation turned grim as the entire area came under water. This led to severe disruptions in vehicular movement.

Depression moves away, rain likely to ease today
