Viktor Gyokeres 'on his way', Arsenal offer amid release clause, team-mate hint

Daily Mirror19-05-2025

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a big-money move for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres ahead of the summer transfer window. The Swedish forward has been in prolific form once again this season, scoring 39 league goals to help fire Sporting to the league title.
Despite having three years left on his contract in Lisbon, rumours of a switch to the Premier League continue to grow louder. It's understood that Arsenal are leading the chase for the 26-year-old Swede's signature.
The north London club are reported to have dangled a tempting £7 million-a-year salary post-tax in front of Gyokeres and are gearing up to make a formal offer to Sporting with personal terms reportedly already settled. It has been suggested that the fee could be around the £60million mark, which would be below his £84m (€100m) release clause. Manchester United are also on the hunt for fresh attacking talent, but haven't yet made their move for Gyokeres. Here we take a look at the situation as it stands.
'On his way'
Portuguese outlet O Jogo has claimed that a move away for Gyokeres is imminent. Having scored in the club's 2-0 win over Vitoria to clinch back-to-back league titles, Gyokeres was at the heart of celebrations at the Jose Alvalade Stadium. During his two-year spell in Portugal, the striker has scored 96 goals in 101 games for the club.
While Sporting still have the Taca de Portugal final to focus on, O Jogo's front page on Monday read: "Swede on his way to Arsenal." It is claimed that a £58.9m deal has been struck between the two clubs, and all that is left is the agreement of personal terms.
'He's ours'
Sporting boss Rui Borges has been vocal in his admiration for Gyokeres throughout the campaign, and after securing the league title against Vitoria he refused to be drawn on the subject of losing his star striker
In the aftermath of their triumph, Borges stated: "I'm not going to sit here and talk about whether he's leaving or not, when he's our player. But I believe he's the best striker in Europe and maybe in the world.
"I'm happy for him and hope that he can win the Golden boot. He deserves it, for everything he's done for our team and all the hard work he's put in daily. There has been some moments where he struggled physically and he still gave his all to try and help the team. I'm happy on that front but what the future holds for him, we'll soon see."
Gyokeres: "It's football"
Meanwhile, Gyokers was coy when asked about the possibility of leaving, telling Sport TV: "It's football, I'm still here. I don't know what's going to happen. Nobody can predict the future."
Goncalves signals Gyokeres' uncertain future
In the wake of their title jubilations, Pedro Goncalves hinted at changes afoot, but issued a defiant message to supporters: "I just want to tell you all something... They said we were never going to be champions without fans (during Covid), they said we were never going to be two-time champions without [Ruben] Amorim, they said we were never going to win the league without [Hugo] Viana," he said, as reported by Football.London.
"They say we won't be three-time champions without Viktor [Gyokeres]. And now, what I want to say is that, we'll see."
Conrad Harder: "The best striker in the world"
Sporting forward Conrad Harder lavished praise on colleague Gyokeres in remarks to the press, saying: "It's fantastic. I try to learn from him. He had a great season. He's the best striker in the world."
Harder's comments reflect the esteem Gyokeres commands, leaving fans to speculate on his next move.
'Outstanding'
Miguel Simoes from Noticias ao Minuto wrote: "Viktor Gyokeres was the standout player, not just for Sporting, but across the entire league. His tally of 39 goals dwarfed that of rivals Vangelis Pavlidis (Benfica) and Samu Aghehowa (FC Porto), who both netted 19."
'Beyond the numbers'
Nuno Felix of Record penned: "His goal-scoring prowess, coupled with his aggressive ball control and imposing physicality, made him a threat both inside and outside the box. Moreover, his tactical adaptability and defensive commitment rendered him an irreplaceable asset in Rui Borges' squad, and he's now a far more rounded player than when he first joined under Ruben Amorim.
"Gyokeres' influence extends beyond mere statistics. His work ethic, leadership and charisma have endeared him to fans and teammates alike, cementing his status as a club icon during his tenure.
"His signature celebration will be etched in memory for years to come. With a release clause of €100million, it's anticipated that the Swede will make a move to Arsenal for around €70m, marking one of the largest sales in Sporting's history. As supporters brace themselves for his departure, they'll continue to celebrate Gyokeres' invaluable contribution to Sporting and Liga Portugal. The Liga Betlic could certainly do with more players of his calibre and impact."
Gyokeres has been in scintillating form this season, scoring a remarkable 39 goals in just 33 league matches. His overall tally for the season is an impressive 53 goals in 51 games across all competitions, a figure that could still increase as Sporting are set to face Benfica in the Taça de Portugal final on May 25.

England ace Michelle Agyemang insists ‘there is more to come from her' with the Lionesses

SURREAL is how Michelle Agyemang described her emergence as a senior England international this year. Last month the versatile Arsenal striker, 19, showed why Gunners and England legend Kelly Smith sees her as one of the club's "fearless" rising stars. 5 5 5 5 Less than a minute into her senior debut, the England ace let fly with a stunning volley that found its targets in a Nations League duel with Belgium. While the Lionesses fell to a 3-2 away loss in that game on April 4 Agyemang's 16-minute cameo underlined why her rise through England's ranks has been rapid. After scoring a hat-trick in a 10-0 demolition of Lithuania in the Women's Under-19 Championship last July, the striker moved up to England's Under-23s two months later. And just two months after scoring a brace against Germany in a friendly for the side, she received first call-up into Sarina Wiegman's England squad. Of her emergence as a senior international player, Agyemang said: "I'm a person of few words, so I'm struggling already. "I think it's 'surreal', like, just the manner in which it happened. "There are so many more things to come and I'm just really grateful for the opportunity." Agyemang's appearance in England's last Nations League outing came at a time of the team contending with injuries to Alessia Russo and Lauren James. Forward Lauren Hemp, now back in the squad after her comeback from injury, was also yet to return to match action for her club Manchester City. With the trio out, Wiegman opted to bring in Agyemang who impressed during her loan spell at Brighton from Arsenal last season, as well for the young Lionesses. Reflecting on her first call-up and being in England's squad this month, she added: "When I got the phone-call [from Sarina when I was] just literally coming out of the shower, "It was unexpected, but I'm really grateful that she's put the trust in me to come in and show what I can do for a longer period of time. "It was amazing to get that call and to be here again. "My family has been so supportive. When I was telling them my mum was screaming, my dad was shouting as well and then my friends as well." Playing across three different age groups for England within 11 months does not phase Agyemang. The player who grew up in Southend, Essex and whose club journey with Arsenal began in their academy at six, is determined to deliver no matter which Lionesses side she plays for. Agyemang said: "Wherever I am (in whichever England team) it's about just going out there, helping the team prepare and winning the trophy. "We still have the Under- 19's Euros coming up (in June) as well as the senior Euros "It's been interesting going through the different age groups, meeting different players and coaches. "But I think the England pathway is so similar across the board so it's really easy to settle in no matter where I am." Against Portugal at 7:45pm tonight Agyemang hopes to get another chance to make her mark and help England return to winning ways in the Nations League. Should Spain lose to Belgium, a defeat of their opponents at Wembley would see Wiegman's side return to the top of their group. Agyemang's last experience of being near Wembley's pitch was during England's 4-0 defeat of Northern Ireland in a World Cup qualifier in October 2021. She said: "I was 15 and was a ball girl. They had a few of the girls from (England's) pathway there. Beth Mead scored (a hat-trick)." Tonight's game will provide a chance for Agyemang to continue to impress with the striker targeting a place in Sarina Wiegman's squad for this year's Euros. In Switzerland on July 5 the Lionesses will begin their push to win the tournament for a second time with a group stage clash with France. 5 And Agyemang hopes to be among the players included in Wiegman's 26-strong group. The Arsenal starlet added: "I like to take things one at a time. "Coming here (to England's camp), showing what I can do in order to maybe get on that plane is my first thought right now."

Real Madrid target surprise Arsenal star with contract talks 'not going well'

Real Madrid could make a shock move for an Arsenal star whose contract negotiations are 'not going well' according to reports. It's set to be a big summer for both clubs who ended up having underwhelming seasons, finishing runners-up in the Premier League and La Liga. Arsenal are close to securing a £51million transfer for midfielder Martin Zubimendi and are planning to spend big on a new striker, likely to be either Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres. Real meanwhile have a new manager as Xabi Alonso replaces Carlo Ancelotti and the Spaniard has already made his first signing in the form of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The right-back was set to move to Madrid on a free but Los Blancos will now pay Liverpool £8.4m to sign him early so he can play in the upcoming Club World Cup. Real have also been linked with making a big money move for William Saliba, but they now have their eye on another Arsenal defender. Myles Lewis-Skelly has just 12 months left on his Gunners contract and, as reported by The Guardian, talks over a new deal are 'not going well'. Real are keeping tabs on the situation and could look to sign another England star following Jude Bellingham and Alexander-Arnold. 18-year-old Lewis-Skelly has enjoyed a meteoric rise since his senior debut last September, making 39 appearances across all competitions, including two stunning performances against Real in the Champions League. More Trending Thomas Tuchel is certainly a fan, selecting the teenager in his first England squad in March before he scored on his debut against Albania. While bizarrely not nominated for the official award, both Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher named Lewis-Skelly as their young player of the season. 'At 18 you're a baby,' Liverpool hero Carragher said on Sky Sports. 'The thought you could win Young Player of the Year at that age. That's something that Michael Owen does or Wayne Rooney, absolute superstars. 'I couldn't believe he wasn't on that list. The reason I went for him was how well he played in big games that I've watched. Against Man City, against Liverpool, in the Bernabeu [against Real].' 'That [left-back] has been a massive problem position for Arsenal and he's gone in and looked like it's his and he's always been there,' Manchester United legend Neville added. 'That's the biggest compliment you can give to a young player, they just slot in. [Bukayo] Saka's done it in the last few years. To go in that position and do what he's done.' Lewis-Skelly's efforts have been all the more impressive given that he came through the academy as a midfielder but has played almost exclusively as a left-back under Mikel Arteta. Arsenal will be desperate to tie him down to a new deal and they are also in contract talks with fellow wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri. The likes of Lewis-Skelly and Alexander-Arnold will next be in action when England take on Andorra in a World Cup qualifier on June 7. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Bruno Fernandes' transfer demand to Jim Ratcliffe as he considers Man Utd exit

Bruno Fernandes is contracted to Manchester United for another two years but with his calls to bolster the squad in the transfer market proving difficult, the captain's future is uncertain Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is reportedly considering leaving the club after previously calling for the hierarchy to buck up their ideas in the transfer market. The Portuguese star put pen to paper on a new deal with the Red Devils in August of last year. However, the extension only materialised after Fernandes made it clear to United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe that he demanded the club recruit top-class players in order to compete with the very best. ‌ Yet United's current pull in the market is now under threat, meaning the midfielder is believed to be weighing up the decision to move on, with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal said to be circling him. ‌ United's loss in the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur and their subsequent inability to offer European football next season means luring some of the game's biggest stars to Old Trafford may prove difficult. Mounting financial concerns will also provide a hurdle for Ruben Amorim this summer. Speaking to the club's website upon signing his contract extension, Fernandes said: "The club knew that I want to compete with the best teams. They knew that we needed to improve the team. And I think that we're doing that. "I said to the, 'I don't need you to promise me that we're going to win the league, because no one can promise that. But at least that we will have a team to compete and be competitive throughout the season, to try to achieve silverware and to compete at the highest levels.'" ‌ Under former manager Erik ten Hag, United did hold their end of the deal last summer. Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte and Noussair Mazraoui were brought in for a combined fee believed to be in the region of £200million. However, Amorim has long been aware funds will likely be tight this summer. In a move that could signal some ambition to Fernandes, it's understood that United are looking to wrap up a £62.5m deal for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha. ‌ Regardless, Fernandes' agent, Miguel Pinho, is already believed to have held discussions with Al-Hilal about a stunning £100m transfer. United have also refused to rule out his possible sale after insisting that every member of their underperforming squad is up for sale. Al-Hilal are eager to conclude a deal quickly so Fernandes, 30, can play for them in the Club World Cup in the United States next month. After United's Europa League final defeat, Fernandes cast doubt on his future by suggesting the club could "cash in" on him. ‌ United signed Fernandes from Sporting CP in January 2020 for a fee rising to £67.7million. He was United's top scorer in 2024/25 with 19 goals and he retained the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award - an accolade he has won in four out of his six seasons at the club. United's head coach also underlined the player's significance this week. "[Fernandes] is really important for us and what we want to build for the team. We talk about this many times," Amorim said. "You can see by his performances. You can see by his leadership. You can see the passion he has for the game. In difficult moments, Bruno is the guy who takes responsibility. He should do because he is the captain." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football.
