Charlie Rusbridge sets his sights on a historic hat-trick

Telegraph09-04-2025
When Charlie Rusbridge won the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championship in December, the Essex talent checked the names on the boys' trophy and noticed that no player had won the event three times in a row.
Rusbridge, who prevailed at the stunning Quinta do Lago South Course by an impressive eight shots, will aim to defend his title later this year when it returns to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the boys' event.
'There have been back-to-toback winners, but no one has won it three times in a row, so if I can be the first to do it that would be pretty cool,' he says.
Rusbridge shot a superb 12 under par score as he recorded three rounds in the 60s, watched in the Algarve on the final day by his father Scott, a PGA teaching pro.
'It was really good fun and one of the best organised events I have ever played in,' says Rusbridge, who also won the English Amateur Under-18 title last summer.
'The Am-Am was great too. the whole event ran really smoothly. Dad's been with me pretty much every tournament, and when he saw I was doing nicely he came out,' he adds.
Rusbridge, who turned 17 last month, admits to still being on a high after his Telegraph victory and revealed that Rose handed out some sage words of advice, which have already proved valuable in 2025.
'Justin said to keep working hard and stay patient through the tough times. It was really good advice: to just trust yourself and to know that you have it.
'I haven't started this season off as fast as I wanted, but to know I could do it in December has been a real confidence boost, and just to stay patient and it will come again,' he says.
The Colne Valley golfer has set himself a 'six-year project' after verbally committing to a Florida State University scholarship in 2026. 'I'll turn pro in 2030 once I graduate, so I have five or so years to get ready to go on tour,' he says.
Grace Crawford, who won the girls' event at Quinta do Lago by just two strokes, is one step ahead of Rusbridge and starts her US collegiate golf this year. This means that she can't defend her girls' title in the year the girls' event marks its 35th anniversary this winter.
'To cap off my junior career in that style to win was fantastic,' she says.
The Scot is now based in the Bahamas at the Albany Golf Academy, and her coach Jon Hearn was also coached by Justin Rose himself.
'There were connections and Justin has such a cool legacy, so it was pretty special,' she says. 'I have had some good wins in the past, but this will be remembered.'
Crawford signed off her junior golf career in style by hitting a career-first all greens in regulation en route to victory, and she also relished having the chance to play in front of the Sky Sports cameras and, of course, enjoy the downtime Quinta do Lago.
She says: 'It was such a good week from start to finish. It was a great atmosphere and we were having fun off the course which made it enjoyable. A lot of memories were made.
'The funniest thing was that I saw Justin on the ninth tee on the last round.
'He was messaging my coach during the round, and he then took a video of me talking to Jon on the phone after I won. His embrace at the end was awesome – to have Justin Rose congratulating you on winning his tournament is pretty special, and I will remember [it] for a long time.'
Crawford, who starts at University of Alabama this summer, will play the Helen Holm Scottish Women's Open for the first time since 2022, when she became the first home player to lift the title in 20 years.
'I'm excited to be taking the step into full-time amateur golf,' she adds. 'It may actually be less hectic than junior golf!'

Rory McIlroy shoots down offer to be player-captain at 2027 Ryder Cup

As golf waits to see if Keegan Bradley will become the first Ryder Cup player-captain for 62 years, Rory McIlroy has shot down the suggestion that he could take on the dual role for Europe because 'I don't think you can do it'. Last summer McIlroy said he had 'contemplated' a suggestion that he could be player-captain at Adare Manor in 2027 but, speaking before the second leg of the FedEx Cup play-offs, the Northern Irishman said: 'I have been asked to do that and I've turned it down. The idea of me being a playing captain sometime soon has come up and I've shot it down straight away. 'You think about the extra media the captains have to do, the extra meetings with the vice-captains, with the PGA of America in Keegan's case, preparing your speech for the opening ceremony — there's a lot of things that people don't see which the captain does the week of the Ryder Cup, especially now it has become so big. 'If you'd said it 20 years ago I'd say, yeah, it was probably possible, but [with] how big of a spectacle and everything that's on the line now, I just think it would be a very difficult position to be in.' Bradley will know his six automatic qualifiers for the US team for next month's Ryder Cup at Bethpage after this week's BMW Championship in Maryland, and speculation is intensifying about whether he will then include himself as one of his six captain's picks. Bradley says he is leaning heavily on his vice-captains, and Jim Furyk will step up if the captain is playing on the course, but McIlroy suggested Bradley would also have to limit his appearances. 'The captain isn't going to be on the course all day, so really he's only going to be able to play one session on Friday and one on Saturday,' he said. 'Would you rather have the flexibility to go twice if he's playing well? Look, it's just my opinion.' McIlroy added that Bradley was one of the top dozen players in the United States — he is ranked tenth in the Ryder Cup points list and needs to retain the BMW title at Caves Valley to climb into a top-six berth. 'That's why everyone is so interested and it's such a compelling case.' Enter Bradley, who has actually had four middling tournaments since the win at the Travelers Championship in June. 'We're ready for this if it happens,' he said of taking on both jobs. 'I'm not sure it's going to. I can truly sit here and say I don't know what's going to happen.' When McIlroy's doubts were relayed to him, Bradley added: 'He may be right. We don't know. No one knows. Everybody was telling me at the start of the year why a guy can't be captain and have a good year [but] for me, I feel like this is one of the best years I've ever had.' Justin Rose, the winner on Sunday in Memphis and potentially Luke Donald's successor as Europe's captain, also added his thoughts. The 45-year-old, who has now guaranteed his place in Europe's automatic spots, said Bradley's form had created the dilemma. Rose said: 'If he feels he's an absolute strategic brilliant mind then maybe he's focused one way. Or he thinks, 'Damn, I'm playing well and I need to win points, I'm going to do it that way.' He's obviously a charismatic and fiery competitor, and I think [he] will become a great captain. He's almost played too well for his own liking in a sense.' Scottie Scheffler, the world No1, then added the American take and did not mince words. 'We have a really good group of guys and Keegan can only help that. If it's something Keegan wants [to play] I think he's a guy we'd all love to have on the team.' More Ryder Cup questions then strained his patience. 'The Ryder Cup is over a month away,' he said. 'If you want to talk about this week let's talk about this week. If not, I've got practice to do.'

10 Scots who took English Premier League by storm – including Champions League winners and surprise inclusion

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE new English Premier League season kicks off on Friday night with reigning champions Liverpool hosting Bournemouth at Anfield. Scotland captain Andy Robertson is likely to start on the Reds' bench after Arne Slot's £40million summer swoop for Cherries left-back Milos Kerkez. Here SunSport Online looks at ten Scots who have made a massive impact on the top flight south of the border. DUNCAN FERGUSON Big Dunc is the top-scoring Scot in EPL history with 68 goals from 269 games with Everton and Newcastle. The Scotland striker initially moved to Goodison in a double loan deal from Rangers with Ian Durrant in October 1994. He famously netted a hat-trick against Bolton three years later - the first time a trio of headers had been scored in a Premier League match. The one-time Dundee United kid was sold to Newcastle in 1998 without the knowledge of then Toffees boss Walter Smith. But he returned to Everton in 2000 and made such an impact that he was honoured with a testimonial match 15 years later. DARREN FLETCHER Manchester United great Fletcher holds the record for most appearances by a Scot in the EPL era - 314. Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson as a schoolboy from Dalkeith, the midfielder won five Premier League titles under the legendary Scots boss. In 2005, he scored the only goal at Old Trafford to end Chelsea's 40-game unbeaten run in the league. Darren Fletcher's Son Jack Follows Dad's Footsteps Fletcher, who won 80 caps for Scotland, ended his EPL career with spells at West Brom and Stoke City. He scored 23 goals in his Premier League career and won every domestic honour with United as well as the Champions League in 2008. KEVIN GALLACHER Strike star Gallacher was a title winner under Sir Kenny Dalglish in Blackburn Rovers' historic triumph in 1994/95. The former Dundee United ace made just one appearance during the campaign as he twice broke a leg. But he scored in a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace and was handed a title medal for his role in the success. Gallacher, a Scotland hero under Craig Brown, is second behind Ferguson on the list of all-time Scots scorers with 56 goals from 198 games. He also played for Coventry and Newcastle in the EPL and scored nine goals in 53 international appearances. He helped Rovers into the top flight and was a key figure in their only title win under benefactor Jack Walker before his 1998 switch to Rangers. Hendry played 218 EPL games, including brief spells at Coventry and Bolton, and scored eight goals. He led Scotland at the World Cup of France 98 after injury ruled out Gary McAllister, and won 51 caps in all. GARY McALLISTER No other Scot has played more Premier League minutes than the 27,199 managed by McAllister in his career. He won the old First Division title with Leeds United - alongside pal Gordon Strachan - in the final season before the EPL came into existence. The former Scotland captain played 325 games and scored 49 goals for Leeds, Liverpool and Coventry. The former Motherwell kid won every domestic honour with the Reds, apart from the Premier League title. He also netted five times in 57 Scotland caps, starring at Euro 92 - where he scored against the CIS - and Euro 96. JAMES McARTHUR A graduate of Hamilton Accies' academy, midfielder McArthur became a Premier League hero with Wigan and Crystal Palace. He stands third on the list of Scots appearance makers - behind Ferguson and McAllister - with 323 games. Capped 32 times by Scotland, the Glasgow-born star was an FA Cup winner with Wigan and runner-up at Wembley with Palace. He moved from Wigan to Palace for £7m in 2014 and was later joined at Selhurst Park by ex-Accies team-mate James McCarthy. McArthur hung up his boots two years ago at the age of 35 but is rightly recognised as one of the most prominent Scots of the EPL era. BRIAN McCLAIR Sir Alex Ferguson's first signing for Manchester United, McClair is a four-time Premier League title winner. Man Utd legend looks like a new man with bushy beard and grey hair He was a key figure for the Red Devils as they captured four championships out of five between 1992/93 and 1996/97. McClair made 162 EPL appearances and contributed 18 goals and 13 assists in an era of domination for Fergie and Co. The former Motherwell and Celtic attacker won ten other trophies with United and later took on a backroom role at the club. He also scored twice in 30 caps for Scotland, including one against the CIS at Euro 92 - the same game in which McAllister scored. JOHN McGINN Aston Villa captain McGinn is one of just two current players on this list of great Scots in the Premier League. Villa were still in the Championship when they signed him from Hibs in 2018 - but he's played a key role in hauling them to the top end of the EPL. The 30-year-old Scotland midfielder has made 203 appearances, with 17 goals and 23 assists, ahead of Saturday's lunchtime kick off against Newcastle at Villa Park. He helped Villa into last season's Champions League - and a clash with boyhood heroes Celtic - after a sparkling season. The former St Mirren kid is also fifth on the all-time list of Scotland scorers with 20 goals from his 77 caps. ANDY ROBERTSON A two-time title winner with Liverpool, the Scotland captain began his EPL career with Hull City in 2014. 3 Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold with the Premier League trophy Credit: Alamy The former Queen's Park and Dundee United left-back has captured championship medals under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. Now 31, the 84-cap star has played 308 games and scored 11 goals ahead of Friday night's Anfield curtain-raiser against Bournemouth. He's also won the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Community Shield, Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup with the Reds. He needs 34 more EPL appearances to eclipse former Scotland team-mate Fletcher at the top of the all-time list. PAUL TELFER This may surprise a few folk - but former Celtic and Scotland right-back Telfer is fourth on the all-time EPL list of Scots with 319 appearances. Telfer had six seasons with Coventry and four with Southampton in the top flight before a reunion with former boss Gordon Strachan at Celtic. The Edinburgh-born defender, who won a single Scotland cap against France in 2000, was a virtual ever-present during a decade in England's top flight. No other Scottish defender has played more EPL games than Telfer, who also scored seven goals in the league. He heads the likes of James Morrison (311), Phil Bardsley (303), Dominic Matteo (276) and Neil Sullivan (247) in the top ten. Jarrad Branthwaite injury: Everton suffer nightmare blow just days before season

Jarrad Branthwaite signed a new contract at Everton over the summer, but he will miss the opening few weeks of the new season after aggravating a hamstring injury Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite will miss the start of the season after suffering a hamstring injury days before his side's Premier League opener at Leeds. ‌ Centre-back Branthwaite, 23, was forced to limp out of training after suffering an injury to his right hamstring, the same area he injured in Everton's final game at Goodison Park against Southampton in May. ‌ The Mail report that Branthwaite could be sidelined until the end of September, causing him to miss the first six games of the new Premier League season - including a Merseyside derby at Anfield - as well as Everton's Carabao Cup second round tie at home to Mansfield. ‌ Branthwaite, who picked up his so far only England cap last year, is also likely to be forced out of contention for Thomas Tuchel's Three Lions squad next month, when they face Andorra and Serbia in World Cup qualifiers. Branthwaite had been attracting interest from several Premier League sides prior to signing a new contract at Everton this summer, and is seen as a key figure in David Moyes ' side ahead of their first season at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium. Fellow centre-back James Tarkowski underwent hamstring surgery earlier this summer and has been eased back into action over pre-season, with Jake O'Brien and Michael Keane also still on the books at the club. Moyes was already keen to add a new centre-back to his squad this summer prior to Branthwaite's injury, with the Scot still desperate for more faces to add to his squad after bringing in midfielders Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jack Grealish. Speaking on the club's pre-season tour of the US, Moyes said: "We've got huge priorities as far as where we would like to try and buy the players if we could do. ‌ "But also, we've got a numbers situation as well, we're short in numbers, so there's a bit of both. We're trying to get the pieces we really want first, and that's what we've been fighting to do. So hopefully we can, hopefully things will fall into place. "But we're just beginning to think, my goodness, we're just not getting enough over the line. "Because we are actively working to try [and] it's not as if we're a club who are saying [that] we're waiting to sell a player before we can bring one in. But it's not really the situation. We've got money to spend, and we'll have to try and spend it wisely." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
