Johnny Rodriguez, first ever Hispanic country music star, dies aged 73

Metro10-05-2025
Trailblazing country singer Johnny Rodriguez has died aged 73.
The news was confirmed by his daughter, Aubry Rae Rodriguez, on social media on Saturday.
'It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Johnny Rodriguez, who left us peacefully on May 9th, surrounded by family,' she wrote.
'Dad was not only a legendary musician whose artistry touched millions around the world, but also a deeply loved husband, father, uncle, and brother whose warmth, humour, and compassion shaped the lives of all who knew him.
'While the world has lost an extraordinary talent, we have lost someone irreplaceable – and we ask for privacy as we navigate this painful moment together.'
The legend's death follows reports earlier this week that he had entered hospice care.
Born in 1951, Rodriguez was the first major Hispanic artist to achieve mainstream success in country music.
His fusion of traditional country sounds with Spanish lyrics and Latin influences helped broaden the genre's appeal and opened doors for future generations of Latino artists.
Born in Sabinal, Texas, Johnny was the second youngest of ten children.
His teenage years were marred by personal tragedy – his father died of cancer when Johnny was 16, and his older brother died in a car accident the following year.
These events led to a troubled period during which he was briefly jailed at age 18. While in jail, he was overheard singing by Texas Ranger Joaquin Jackson, who introduced him to promoter 'Happy' Shahan.
Shahan hired Rodriguez to perform at the Alamo Village tourist attraction, where he was discovered by country stars Tom T. Hall and Bobby Bare.
Encouraged by Hall and Bare, Rodriguez moved to Nashville in 1971 with just $14 and a guitar.
He soon signed with Mercury Records and released his debut single, Pass Me By (If You're Only Passing Through), in 1972, which reached No. 9 on the Billboard country chart.
His breakthrough came in 1973 with You Always Come Back (To Hurting Me), his first No. 1 hit, followed by Ridin' My Thumb to Mexico, which also topped the charts.
Rodriguez became known for incorporating Spanish verses into his songs, a novelty in country music at the time, and was hailed as the genre's first Hispanic star.
Throughout the 1970s, he released a string of hits, including That's the Way Love Goes and Love Put a Song in My Heart.
His debut album, Introducing Johnny Rodriguez, reached No. 1 on the country albums chart, and he received multiple nominations from the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music. More Trending
In 1979, Rodriguez signed with Epic Records and worked with producer Billy Sherrill. While his chart success waned, he still achieved Top 10 hits in the 1980s, such as Foolin' and How Could I Love Her So Much.
In 1998, headlines exploded with news of Rodriguez fatally shooting a man he believed to be a burglar. Rodriguez was charged with murder but was acquitted by a Texas jury, which deemed the incident self-defense.
He toured extensively across the U.S. and internationally, playing venues from the Ryman Auditorium to Carnegie Hall.
He was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007 and received the Pioneer Award from the Institute of Hispanic Culture in 2010.

But it was in the voiceover to which Helena mimed to, that she may have taken a swipe at her fellow contestants, Shakira, Toni Laites and Yasmin Pettet. The audio was a clip from an interview with actress Ariana Greenblatt, who played the 'mean girl' daughter in the Barbie movie. Ariana says: "Whatever, we all know blondes have more fun, because their bleach is in their hair, let's talk about it." Helena's use of the audio could be seen as a dig to Shakira, Toni and Yasmin, who were often billed as the being given the 'mean girls' edit during this series of Love Island. Her TikTok also coincided with the release of an i-D Magazine feature interview with the three Islanders where they talked about feeling grateful they could represent brunettes and in Shakira's case, the South Asian community. "What have I signed up for?" Shakira said in the i-D interview. 'Everyone's gonna love the blonde hair, blue-eyed girls, we see year in year out on Love Island. I thought, based on initial attraction, it wasn't going to go well for me, but I was pleasantly surprised.' Shakira, Toni and Yasmin also addressed the ongoing feuds and rivalries in the villa describing at "classic High School behaviour". 'We felt that massively in the changing room, the snickers, the whispers, the dirty look," Shakira said. "When you come around the corner and they stop talking, you feel isolated, it feels frosty, really tense, and it's not nice. "It wasn't a bad edit; we tried to fix it, but that was our experience, we lived it.' Despite having a rocky relationship with some of their co-stars, the trio stuck together and gracefully took on every obstacle thrown at them. Toni won the series alongside Cach and scooped a prize of £50k, while Shakira and Harry and Yas and Jamie are also going strong. Despite each bagging themselves a new fella, they have proudly said that the real prize is the friendships they made.

Morgan Wallen gives a BRUTAL snub to next year's Grammy Awards despite having America's best-selling album

Morgan Wallen has made one of the most shocking decisions of his career. Despite having the best-selling album of the year with I'm The Problem, the country superstar, 32, is refusing to even enter the Grammys race after nearly a decade of snubs. On Tuesday, Billboard confirmed that Wallen's team will not be submitting his last record, or any of its 37 tracks, for consideration at the 2026 Grammy Awards. According to Hits Daily Double, which first broke the news, the boycott extends to all categories, including the songwriting categories and best country solo performance. The only exception: his camp isn't blocking other songwriters from submitting their own work from the project. The decision is a striking one given the success of the I'm the Problem, which produced four No. 1 singles on Billboard's Country Airplay chart and his chart-topper duet with Tate McRae, What I Want. For the Lies Lies Lies hitmaker, the choice may be as simple as not needing another trophy to validate his success or not feeling comfortable in the room. Earlier this year, he made headlines after abruptly leaving Saturday Night Live to return to 'God's country.' While it is an unspoken tradition for the guests and the cast to hug and mingle before the credits roll, he reportedly rushed off at the end of the show to head to the airport. At the time, Wallen's team told Variety that he had a good time on the show and did not mean to cause any offense with his quick exit and Instagram post. has reached out to Wallen's team for comment. Wallen's latest move highlights his fraught relationship with the Recording Academy over the past decade. The East Tennessee native has never earned a Grammy nomination for his solo work. His only nods came earlier this year for his collaboration with Post Malone on I Had Some Help, which scored two nominations and zero wins. That lack of recognition has become more glaring as Wallen's star has risen. His 2021 double album Dangerous was crowned Billboard's No. 1 album of the first 25 years of the century. Yet the Grammy voters all but ignored him, even in the best new artist category. Many have speculated that the Grammys has historically iced Wallen out due to his turbulent past and controversies. In 2021, he was caught on video using a racial slur, sparking industry backlash. He apologized and checked into rehab, while the Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association both banned him from eligibility for a year. Since then, Nashville has welcomed him back. He's scored 13 CMA nominations and took home entertainer of the year in 2024. At the ACM Awards, he's been nominated 20 times post-scandal, winning three, including album of the year for Dangerous and male artist of the year in 2023. While Wallen's boycott is unusual, it's not unheard of. The Weeknd famously stopped submitting music after his After Hours album and hit track, Blinding Lights, were snubbed in 2021. At the time, he tweeted that the Grammys were 'corrupt.' Drake, too, has declined to participate, citing a lack of recognition for hip-hop. Even after a decade in the industry, Wallen, who launched to stardom after competing on The Voice at age 20 in 2014, recently admitted fame is 'still weird' to him. 'There's parts of that that I don't like,' he said on the Last Weekend podcast after his SNL exit made headlines. 'I think anybody who has to deal with that… it's not ideal.' 'It's not ideal to go everywhere, and even if you don't get bothered, you were on edge the whole time because you thought you might [be bothered],' he continued. 'There's things that you just don't do. There's just things you don't do anymore.' As for how he spends most of his free time, Wallen explained he usually goes hunting out with his buddies 'in the middle of nowhere' to be 'at ease.' 'I ain't been in a bar since the last time I was in a bar that everybody knows about,' he quipped referencing his notorious night out at Eric Church's bar in Nashville, which ended with an arrest for throwing a chair off the rooftop.
