Elite women's sports revenue to top £1.8bn in 2025
Global revenue generated by elite women's sports is predicted to exceed £1.8bn in 2025, with finance experts Deloitte stating the "commercial appeal of women's sports and its athletes has never been higher".Last year's revenue surpassed £1bn for the first time and the latest Deloitte report is predicting at least £1.88bn in matchday, broadcast and commercial revenue in 2025.Basketball (44%) is forecast to overtake football (35%) as the highest revenue-generating sport. Commercial income, which includes sponsorships, partnerships, merchandising sales and pre-season tour income, is expected to represent the largest share of revenue across women's sports (54%), with broadcast revenues contributing 25% and matchday revenues providing the remaining 21%.Jennifer Haskel, knowledge and insight lead in the Deloitte Sports Business Group, said: "The growth of women's sport has continued to exceed expectations as various competitions, leagues, clubs and athletes generate significant returns, despite limited resources."Women's sport is rewriting the playbook and challenging traditional norms to redefine the future of the industry."Haskel highlighted the importance of major tournaments, like the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup, which will be held in the UK and has already sold a record number of tickets, and Women's Euro 2025, in driving the revenue increases. She added: "Major events are increasing visibility and participation across many sports and geographies, but deliberate actions need to be taken after these big moments to drive domestic success for leagues and clubs."It is no longer enough to just host an event - organisers must be bold and think of new ways to engage fans and drive participation even after the champion is crowned."The commercial appeal of women's sports and its athletes has never been higher, as the sector continues to shine on the global stage."Increasing strategic investment is more important than ever to drive a professional global landscape and create an engaging industry for generations to come. It is crucial for women's sport organisations to implement the right structures, develop a clear plan for investment, and define a long-term vision for their place within a rapidly evolving global industry."

Welsh councils face £5.25m Aberthaw Power Station station pay-out
There are serious questions to answer over why a legal row over a defunct power station has left a group of ten Welsh councils footing a bill in the millions, a senior Tory has this year a High Court judge declared that a contract to demolish Aberthaw Power Station for the Cardiff Capital Region was awarded a Senedd committee the chair of the consortium, Mary Ann Brocklesby, said the region will pay a settlement of £5.25m to a rival company that lost RT Davies, Conservative MS for South Wales East, said it was "frankly unacceptable". Brocklesby told the Senedd's economy committee, which Davies chairs, that an independent review handled by accountancy firm Deloitte is region's director Kellie Beirne assured Members of the Senedd (MSs) the region will take steps to ensure it does not happen Beirne admitted it had caused "a lot of pain and anguish for many, many people".Under the region's plans the site, which hosted a coal fired power station until 2019, will be used to support the production of renewable and green energy region says the legal settlement has been funded from "commercial returns on interests" generated, and that no further public money is required for it. A statement from the region said: "A legal challenge was made following a procurement exercise for the demolition contract relating to the Aberthaw Power Station, which was awarded in July 2023."A mediated settlement with the claimant has now been reached and an independent review of the procurement arrangements is underway. "The settlement has been fully funded from commercial returns on interest generated on balances held, with no impact on core programme budgets or any requirement for further public funding."In line with Cardiff Capital Region's commitment to transparency and accountability, the independent review will examine the procurement process in full in order to ensure that all issues are identified and acted upon."While the independent review is being conducted and until that process is concluded, we are unable to comment further."This matter does not affect the wider work of Cardiff Capital Region or the progress of the Aberthaw project. The redevelopment of the site into a flagship green energy park is progressing at pace."

UK new car sales recover in May as EV discounts attract buyers, SMMT data shows
June 5 (Reuters) - Britain's new car sales rose from a year earlier in May, marking the second month of recovery in 2025, amid heavy discounting by electric vehicle makers, a report by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) showed on Thursday. Chinese EVs have been rapidly expanding in the European markets by offering deep discounts and forcing other automakers in an intense price war that has strained their profit margins. New car registrations rose 1.6% year-over-year to 150,070 units during the month, SMMT said, the best May performance since 2021. Electric vehicles accounted for more than 47% of the total car sales in May with battery electric vehicle sales rising 25.8% year-over-year. "A return to growth for new car registrations in May is welcome but manufacturer discounting on new products continues to underpin the market, notably for electric vehicles," SMMT chief Mike Hawes said in a statement. The auto industry, already strained by supply chain disruptions and stiff competition, has been forced to cut prices amid brittle consumer sentiment, uncertain global trade policies, and the costly shift away from internal combustion engines. "The continued rise in EV registrations shows a growing consumer appetite for sustainable transport, further fuelled by the government's recent announcement to remove the need for planning applications for at home EV charging installations," said Jamie Hamilton, automotive partner and head of electric vehicles at Deloitte. Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab sold 2,016 cars in the UK during the month, a 36.04% decline year-over-year, according to SMMT. Data published earlier this week by research group New AutoMotive showed a bigger 45% drop in the automaker's UK sales.
